Mexican Institute of Sound (MIS) and Meridian Brothers join forces on Ruido Tovar, a cross-border collaboration that reimagines the tropical traditions linking Mexico and Colombia. Drawing inspiration from icons like Rigo Tovar and the psychedelic Mexican cumbia era, the project blends danzón, son, cha-cha-cha, and experimental electronics into a vibrant new language. MIS's genre-bending electronic tropicalism meets Meridian Brothers' avant-garde eccentricity, resulting in a sound that is both reverent and playfully distorted. Together, Camilo Lara and Eblis Alvarez pay tribute to decades of musical exchange while pushing tropical music into unexpected territory.

The diatonic button accordion, from the beginning of the 19th century, became hugely popular in traditional rituals, secular celebrations and love songs, bringing a new aesthetic to Masikoro music in the south-west of the Great Island. The Masikoro's appropriation of the instrument began with modifying it's scale to suit indigenous ears and music. This involved carving the reeds of the accordion to turn it into a "prepared accordion". As the instrument is very difficult to find in new condition, musicians play on old models inherited from their fathers, sometimes even their grandfathers. Repaired several times, they produce noises and clicks from the bellows that become elements of expression in the music.Often accompanied by singing, rattles and drums, the accordion now plays a major role in various traditional rituals such as possession sessions, ceremonies of exorcism, of circumcision and funerals. It also accompanies dancing and songs of nostalgia, and sometimes the end of market days. UPC: 3415820001187Label: Ocora FranceRelease Date: 4.24.26Format: CD
Karimi, master of singing, drew on the most authentic source of the radif (classical repertoire) to create an intimate expression far removed from any artifice, in perfect harmony with Mohammad Musavi's ney flute -a simple reed with immense power. This is how Karimi illustrates the mode in which he has chosen to sing: "Navâ has a special beauty of it's own. A mode with a sweetness, finesse and subtlety that plunges the listener into a state of meditation. It's melodies are among the most traditional, having been passed on for at least three hundred years from teacher to pupil right down to my own teachers, Davâmi and Hâjji Aqâ".Mohammad Musavi's reed flute (ney) also signifies the calligrapher's pen. There is indeed a way of emphasising a single note in a song as if it were a stroke, of echoing a fragment of it, of seizing on a motif and unfolding it in an arabesque, of organising it's punctuation, which evokes calligraphy and illumination. At this point, two ineffable breaths remain: that of a man and that of a flute. But, as Mowlânâ Rumi suggests, are they not one and the same being? UPC: 3415820001200Label: Ocora FranceRelease Date: 6.5.26Format: CD
Mosaic is an ensemble made up of six musicians from Bulgaria, France, Portugal and Tunisia. Their compositions are above all else a space for musical encounters at the crossroads of jazz and Mediterranean music. Their musical language is varied, combining Balkan ornamentation with the colours of Western European chamber music and the rhythmic essence of North African music. The ensemble explores imaginative worlds and interweaves traditions like a mosaic, passing fromenergetic grooves to the breath of the Bulgarian kaval and the woody sonority of stringed instruments. Now that it's creations have been welcomed throughout the Mediterranean, Mosaic presents a debut album inspired by the different places it has visited and the people it has met. Recorded between 1988 and 1989 in a small 8-track home studio in Amman, Pieces of a Dream captures a side of the Arab music scene that is rarely documented: a group of musicians deeply inspired by jazz, soul, yacht rock, and city pop, creating music that sounds closer to late-night Los Angeles or London than what most would associate with Jordan at the time.Nechazz was formed by Palestinian-Jordanian musicians Basim Said and Khaldoon Nasser, and Iraqi singer and guitarist Kassim Sabounchi. While the trio became locally known for their live shows at the iconic Amman club Rumours, the music they wrote and recorded together was never officially released and remained unheard-even among friends and family. The album blends smooth R&B, jazz, and sophisticated pop arrangements, drawing inspiration from artists such as Bobby Caldwell, Steely Dan, Michael Franks, early George Michael, Tears for Fears, Level 42, and Stevie Wonder, while still sounding entirely like their own creation. Tracks like ""Love Meeting Love"" and ""Over You"" showcase the band's smooth harmonies, synth work, and musicianship. The release began as a cassette discovered in a family archive and has since become one of the most pleasantly surprising rediscoveries of late-1980s Arab independent music: a timeless collection of songs created between rehearsals, nightlife shifts, aviation careers, and everyday life in Amman.

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Amir ElSaffar has achieved international renown for his work combining the Maqam of Iraq and the Arab world with jazz. With Ashwaaq, he displays a new facet of his work with a composition for string quartet, santur, and vocalist Khaled AlHafez, a master of the musical tradition of Aleppo, Syria. This dialogue between AlHafez's warm voice and interpretive style that blends rigor and grace and string quartet explores the microtonal resonances of the maqam and the possibilities of a polyphony rooted in Arab traditions. The texts come from Turjuman Al-Ashwaaq (Translator of Desires) a collection of mystical and ecstatic love poems written by the revered 12th century Sufi mystic, Ibn Arabi, and explore the universal power of love, the inner quest, and the search for unity in the diversity of the world.Ashwaaq is a captivating moment of celebration, where poetic and musical heritages intersect beyond cultural and disciplinary boundaries.

Gaston BONHEUR. Abaton Book Company is pleased to announce the release of 'From St. Petersburg With Love', the debut CD by singer/songwriter Julia Vorontsova. This CD release contains 24 original songs all sung in Russian and includes a 12 page booklet of English commentary and drawings by the artist. Julia Vorontsova was born in St. Petersburg Russia in 1982. After studying violin and piano for three years at St. Petersburg State Music School she started composing her own poetry and songs while teaching herself guitar. She grew up listening to underground 'Bard' folk singers such as Bulat Okudzhava, Yuri Vizbor and Veronika Dolina. 'The Singing Poets' In a medieval sense, Julia is a true 'singing poet' and the singing poets of Russian are called bards. They like to stick their heads over the necks of guitars and sing their poetry. The great three singing poets in Russia are Alexander Galitch, Bulat Okudjava and Vladimir Vyssotsky. Julia's mentor, Veronika Dolina is 'universally considered in Russia as the only singing poet who approaches the talents and the status of these three'. Through Dolina, Julia Vorontsova is in direct disciplic lineage to this group of poets. Julia understands the artform, the subject matter, and most importantly has the voice and talent to present the genre in her own unique way. She is undoubtedly the most recent link to these bards of the Soviet era.

Formed in Toronto by Syrian vocalist Leen Hamo and Lebanese multi-instrumentalist John Abou Chacra, Kazdoura bring together two distinct musical backgrounds. Following the success of their debut album, Ghoyoum, they return with Markab, a record that blends Arabic musical traditions with a groove-driven, organic band sound shaped by psychedelic and Anatolian rock, indie, jazz, Afrobeat and Gnawa influences. Arabic maqamat, including Bayat, Rast, Nakriz, Hijaz and Kurd, sit at the heart of the album, carried by Hamo's vocals and Abou Chacra's guitar, saxophone and flute. Prominent basslines, live drums, analogue textures and hypnotic grooves drive the arrangements throughout. Markab, meaning "vehicle," emerges from a very different place than it's predecessor. While Ghoyoum was shaped by upheaval and uncertainty, the new album is firmly rooted in the present, reflecting a period of greater confidence, curiosity and joy. Across ten tracks, Kazdoura explore themes of homeland, love, social expectations, self-image, vulnerability and psychological struggle, alongside everyday pleasures, freedom and the possibility of moving forward.
