A finger style acoustic guitar player using alternate tunings. The style is a bit new age, a bit ambient, and a bit just plain hard to describe. Somewhere back 2001 or 2002 he began to dabble with alternative tunings and quickly headed down the path that has resulted in the CD Borderline Normal. The tunes on this CD have evolved over the past few years and were recorded in various rooms of my home; A homegrown project all the way around with the exception of the mastering by Bill Wolf (Al Petteway, Jim Tozier, Brooks Williams, etc.) and art work by Glenn Wolff, a fellow Traverse City, Michigan resident and well known artist and bass player for the Neptune Quartet. New to the music scene and relatively new to finger style guitar, James' primary guitars are both hand built, one from Irish luthier Dermot McIlroy and the other from American Simon Fay. 'James Filkins's acoustic guitar CD derives it's title from the alternate tunings of it's 14 tracks. However, no ability to comprehend cryptic annotations like 'DGDGBD' and 'DADF#AD' is necessary: the clear, melodic instrumentals on Borderline Normal speak eloquently for themselves. If you like the sound of fingerpicked acoustic guitar, this CD is for you -- and if you don't, Borderline Normal may just succeed in converting you. Except for some silvery chimes and light percussion on a few of the tracks, it's pretty much just James Filkins and his acoustic guitars for the full 50 minutes of the CD. This turns out to be a very good thing. His compositions are crisp and confident, yet produce a relaxed, easygoing ambience. The CD opens with the well-titled piece, 'Round Lake Leelanau (A Biking Tune),' a track redolent with fresh air and open space. Like a musical game of Marco Polo, the clear, high refrain, slightly evocative of a bicycle bell, seems to call and answer the warmer underlying melody. The rest of the tracks can be divided into two basic camps: those with percussion and those without. The title cut and 'Possibilities' are upbeat and sunny, their sauntering pace accentuated by laidback conga and djembe rhythms. 'Early Morning Promises' and 'A Bleak December' are slower and more contemplative guitar solos. Because all 14 tracks are more or less mellow and cohesive in tone, it's difficult to pick out favourites. On the upside, there are definitely no clunkers. Filkins gets just about everything right with Borderline Normal. Part of the charm is the utter lack of pretension: the liner notes comment that the recording was 'engineered and produced by James Filkins, if at all.' There are no synthesisers or cheesy sound effects, just good, unadulterated guitar music and sound quality so sharp that it often seems like Filkins is playing in the same room. What is all the more surprising is that the tracks were recorded in his own home. Uncluttered and full of homegrown integrity, this CD is the perfect companion to a summer afternoon on the porch with a good book. Not that it should be relegated to background music; it's unobtrusive but fully worthy of your attention. I've never cared for the word 'borderline' with it's implications of being only-just-good-enough. Elliot Sharp & Tim Motzer's debut improvised collaboration, Cosmic Dusts, was recorded in August 2025 at Sharp's zOaR Studio in NYC. Sharp, a pioneering guitarist and composer from the 80s downtown NYC scene, has built a prolific, genre-spanning body of work spanning Carbon, his blues band Terraplane, string quartets, operas, and releases on his own zOaR label. Motzer, a genre-bending guitarist, improviser, and producer, has worked with David Sylvian, Jaki Liebezeit, Ursula Rucker, and Percy Jones, releasing solo and collaborative work on his 1k Recordings label. Their first meeting sparked immediate chemistry, yielding six tracks that traverse imaginary landscapes and futuristic terrain.

In 2000, after almost two decades of hibernation under the ambient waves and dub currents of the Sargasso Sea, Liquid Sound Design revived the seminal 'Auntie Aubrey's' series, an Orb Remix Project. Ventschau is Raphael Vanoli's second solo album, following Bibrax. The album takes it's name from a small village in northern Germany where Vanoli stayed on writing retreats between 2018 and 2023. The forest, and long stretches of being alone in it, shaped how the music moves. Ventschau is an ode to that love of the forest - poetic and personal, with more room than before for melody, harmony, and song-like shapes. Mantra-like figures recur; on several pieces Vanoli sings softly into the strings, so breath, voice, and resonance carry as a single sound. At the core of the record are the ""blowing"" techniques Vanoli has been developing for years - sounds drawn from breath against the strings of a hyper amplified electric guitar, alongside the full range of artefacts and resonances such a guitar can be made to reveal, among them the voice itself, sung through the strings. This is the sound world of the instrument as he hears it, and it has kept opening since Bibrax. The spectrum of solo electric guitar widens further here as those techniques share the room with more conventional playing and a broader palette: a Fender Bass VI, a 12-string electric, and on one piece a steel-string acoustic.Some of the pieces lean into fragility and let it stay. Others are epic and densely detailed - wall-of-sound passages that move across the whole frequency range, from the high crispness of an insect world down to sub-low, earthquake-like rumble. All of it is made live, in real time, on a single guitar - which makes the comparison to a classical recital literal rather than figurative: technically, that's what it is.All the pieces are his, written across those five years, except ""Alti Plano,"" which draws on a traditional Bolivian melody. The record was made live to tape in May and August 2023 at Electric Monkey Studio in Zaandam, with Kasper Frenkel engineering. Almost everything is analogue, apart from a few pedals. Vanoli kept the number of takes low and let the rough edges stay where they fell.
