A finger style acoustic guitar player using alternate tunings. The style is a bit new age, a bit ambient, and a bit just plain hard to describe. Somewhere back 2001 or 2002 he began to dabble with alternative tunings and quickly headed down the path that has resulted in the CD Borderline Normal. The tunes on this CD have evolved over the past few years and were recorded in various rooms of my home; A homegrown project all the way around with the exception of the mastering by Bill Wolf (Al Petteway, Jim Tozier, Brooks Williams, etc.) and art work by Glenn Wolff, a fellow Traverse City, Michigan resident and well known artist and bass player for the Neptune Quartet. New to the music scene and relatively new to finger style guitar, James' primary guitars are both hand built, one from Irish luthier Dermot McIlroy and the other from American Simon Fay. 'James Filkins's acoustic guitar CD derives it's title from the alternate tunings of it's 14 tracks. However, no ability to comprehend cryptic annotations like 'DGDGBD' and 'DADF#AD' is necessary: the clear, melodic instrumentals on Borderline Normal speak eloquently for themselves. If you like the sound of fingerpicked acoustic guitar, this CD is for you -- and if you don't, Borderline Normal may just succeed in converting you. Except for some silvery chimes and light percussion on a few of the tracks, it's pretty much just James Filkins and his acoustic guitars for the full 50 minutes of the CD. This turns out to be a very good thing. His compositions are crisp and confident, yet produce a relaxed, easygoing ambience. The CD opens with the well-titled piece, 'Round Lake Leelanau (A Biking Tune),' a track redolent with fresh air and open space. Like a musical game of Marco Polo, the clear, high refrain, slightly evocative of a bicycle bell, seems to call and answer the warmer underlying melody. The rest of the tracks can be divided into two basic camps: those with percussion and those without. The title cut and 'Possibilities' are upbeat and sunny, their sauntering pace accentuated by laidback conga and djembe rhythms. 'Early Morning Promises' and 'A Bleak December' are slower and more contemplative guitar solos. Because all 14 tracks are more or less mellow and cohesive in tone, it's difficult to pick out favourites. On the upside, there are definitely no clunkers. Filkins gets just about everything right with Borderline Normal. Part of the charm is the utter lack of pretension: the liner notes comment that the recording was 'engineered and produced by James Filkins, if at all.' There are no synthesisers or cheesy sound effects, just good, unadulterated guitar music and sound quality so sharp that it often seems like Filkins is playing in the same room. What is all the more surprising is that the tracks were recorded in his own home. Uncluttered and full of homegrown integrity, this CD is the perfect companion to a summer afternoon on the porch with a good book. Not that it should be relegated to background music; it's unobtrusive but fully worthy of your attention. I've never cared for the word 'borderline' with it's implications of being only-just-good-enough. Disregard the name: Borderline Normal is very good indeed. -Jennifer Mo, Rambles.NET "... a treat for the ears... very reflective ... His guitar music feels like a continuous flow of inspiration of the deeper layers of the soul." -Henk te Veldhuis, "Bridge Guitar Reviews" (Jan. 2007) Borderline Normal is an easy listen... soothing music that calms the spirit. The sound quality is top-notch, which really showcases Filkins' playing and the wonderful tone of the guitars.' - Jim Tozier, Solid Air Records Recording Artist (Feb 1, 2007)

On his second album Summer Sands & Sleeping Bears, fingerstyle acoustic guitarist and composer James Filkins creates acoustic instrumental music that is a bit new age, a bit Celtic, acoustically melodic, moody and sonically textured. Inspired by the landscape and locations around Northwestern Lower Michigan, both title tracks were inspired by the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Leland Harbor. According to Patrick Ragains of The Minor 7th, The music on Summer Sands & Sleeping Bears is "reflective and never hurried... A musical departure that expresses the peace and joy of having been here, and the hope to return." ORIGIINAL RELEASE DATE JUNE 12, 2012

DARLENE KOLDENHOVEN, GRAND MEMOIR - A Grand Memoir is Grammy-winning vocalist Darlene Koldenhoven's third solo piano album and fourteenth on her TimeArtr Recordings label. Ten original Contemporary Instrumental Solo Piano compositions, including one improvisation, range from relaxing to rousing. Her sonic palette reveals a variety of meters and modes, expressed with sweeping emotions, ethereal spaces, some pensive, and others pure joy. Darlene's love for the piano shines through these heartfelt live performances. All piano pieces came to Darlene in awakening dreams, during the writing of her memoir, Put Your Dress Down and Sing (Sibylline Press) (book, ebook, and audiobook also drop 8/7/26). On January 22, 2026, Darlene recorded live in her living room on a 1926 Golden Era Steinway Model L grand piano with original strings and ivory keys. The century-old piano was entrusted to Darlene's care by a family whose concert pianist mother was the original owner. Sheet music is available at Darlene's website. Music from A Grand Memoir appears in the audiobook version of Darlene's memoir.

We live in a world where we are bombarded by information-often contradictory and rarely neutral- causing our sense of stability to shift. We seldom afford ourselves the luxury of peace of mind. Mist of Belonging composed and produced by Grammy nominated Peter Gordon, creates a space that reaches us with calm, hope and well-being. The album serves as an audio off-ramp from the high stress, high anxiety lives we lead, allowing us to pause and step outside the echo chamber surrounding us. Gordon's flute seems to breathe alongside us, guiding a meditative pathway. Emmy award winner, Daniel Bernard Roumain's violin, masterfully weaves between the notes adding expressive gestures that speak all languages and crystal bowl practitioner, Rebecca Carroll, provides a sustained sense of warmth and cohesion. Native flute and tongue drums serve to center us as a grounding force. With gentle guidance, this music cradles us, inviting us into a quiet shared space-a mist of belonging.

Hausu Mountain co-founder Maxwell Allison returns to the label under his moniker Mukqs with an hour-long progressive ambient statement entitled Juckport. Performed live on a solitary sampler in a single take, the album shifts from warp-speed blasts of glitch to iridescent jazz fusion piano sketches to expanses of ecstatic synthesis. Allison's improvised approach to live sound collage blends innumerable layers of texture and oblique harmony into a continually thrilling electro-acoustic mosaic. Each track begins as a bank of samples sourced from Allison's collection of synthesizers, drum machines, and field recordings, arrows pointing in a direction but without established counterpoint. Spontaneity, and the sometimes chaotic juxtapositions it engenders, undercut any traces of machine logic in the music as it expands and contracts organically. It is the product of hands moving in real space, in real time, for an extended period. Juckport is animated by a duality of glitched-out abstraction and intangible bliss. Synthesizer pads stretch beyond the imagination's horizon line, counterbalanced by a churn of clipped samples that scatter across the stereo field like rapidfire psychedelic flashbacks. Cohesion emerges through textural continuity and development rather than repetition or pattern-making. Blink and innumerable details might slip by unnoticed, and the landscape might have shifted entirely. Still, as more viscous sounds enfold the listener, they communicate a calm, settled mindset, reflecting the motion of a creative mental state; large amounts of information are synthesized into a focused stream that reacts intuitively with the introduction of each new complicating element.
