Lavender Eco-Mix Vinyl. Every mother has a unique story. One thing is true for every mother, though: There's no deadline quite like a pregnancy. Award-winning Toronto singer-songwriter Abigail Lapell was pregnant with her first child when she booked studio time on Vancouver Island to make an album about motherhood. The nine songs on Shadow Child " one for each month of gestation " had to be ready before then, and her return flight was booked on the last day she could safely fly in her third trimester. Working with producer Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, Black Mountain), Lapell finished her songs in the studio and on rural walks beside the Pacific Ocean. She enlisted some of her favourite singers, all British Columbians, all mothers: Frazey Ford, Jill Barber, Pharis Romero. They're all people with unique, distinctive voices,? she says, which is what I'm drawn to.? Musically, Lapell was looking for a stark, acoustic sound, as opposed to 2024's Juno Award-nominated Anniversary (recorded in Niagara with Great Lake Swimmers' Tony Dekker) and 2022's acclaimed Stolen Time (recorded in Montreal with Howard Bilerman, featuring E Street Band saxophonist Jake Clemons).Lapell's road to motherhood was fraught, involving years of IVF and a 2023 miscarriage " that she experienced on stage while on tour. (She finished her set.) Her son was born in November 2024. The song cycle of Shadow Child covers joy and loss, using metaphors from Maritime tragedy, little cannibals,? reproductive health, acquiring language, and lives altered by the arrival of a newborn. The title track refers to ultrasound imaging of a liminal person that doesn't quite exist yet,? says Lapell. What does it mean to be a responsible friend to be there for someone you lovewithout trying to save them? The first lesson I learned about caregiving, says Elizabeth, is that I need to put on my own oxygen mask before I can help anyoneelse. The next lesson (and the one you won't find in an airline seat-back) was that no matter how much I wanted to, I couldn't take away anyones pain. I wasntthere to fix anyone. I just had to accept them on their own terms. That philosophy runs throughout the album, with songs about a family members passing, a friendliving with long COVID, and the shared burden of a society steeped in conflict and injustice. I realized that everyone I knew, including myself, was being asked toprocess an enormous amount of grief at an alarming pace, she says. Writing these songs became my way to surrender to those experiences and slow down enough tobe fully present for the people in my life.Some of the songs on Responsible Friend are joyful dedications; others feel more like letters Elizabeth wasnt sure she wanted to send. Taken together, it's a recordabout slowing down in a world that keeps accelerating. It's a commitment to friends, family, and self, at a time when everyone seems to be carrying more than they canreasonably hold. How does an artist follow a critically-acclaimed breakthrough record like Southeastern? For Jason Isbell, the answer was Something More Than Free. With songs like "24 Frames," "Flagship," and "Children of Children," the 2015 album found Isbell tackling the subjects he knows best: the dignity of work, the difficulty of love, the friction between the present and the past. Something More Than Free further established the North Alabama native as a bonafide songwriter, and also netted him his first two Grammy Awards, for Americana Album of the Year, and for American Roots Song of the Year ("24 Frames.")
10 years later, Something More Than Free has been re-mixed by the legendary Sylvia Massy (Prince, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty), breathing new life into these now classic songs in the Isbell canon. And as a cherry on top, the man has broken his normal rule and included a b-side here. "Should I Go Missing" is a bluesy jammer highlighted by Isbell's slide guitar playing. If we're lucky, it will become a staple at his upcoming live shows.
