The Will of Tongues is the new studio album by Sarah Davachi, and it is certainly her most ambitious to date, spanning over two hours, available as a triple vinyl set, or double compact disc in hardback book style packaging. The album features five new works for historical pipe organs, three choral pieces, a suite of "interludes" for various microtonal ensembles, and a longform chamber piece for strings, organ, and tape. In addition to Davachi performing on organ, the album also features an incredible group of musicians from across the US and Europe, including Whitney Johnson (viola), Eyvind Kang (viola), Lucy Railton (cello), Diapason (an experimental brass ensemble from Los Angeles), Phaedrus (a Renaissance flute consort from Switzerland), and Chamber Choir Ireland. The album engages several different compositional methods and concepts, all rooted in the minimalist tradition from which Davachi primarily operates, but underscoring The Will of Tongues as a combined body of work is a deep reverence for the act of listening. This collection of music is not easy listening, and it's not meant to be - when long durations and a reduction of materials are at play, the ear and mind are forced to confront sound itself and the significant mental spaces that it continually gives rise to. The Will of Tongues is thus a celebration of iterative listening and of extreme confrontation, of intimate aural experience and it's vast psychic horizons.

In this second volume of the ASM Forte Forward series, Anne-Sophie Mutter performs works by two composers close to her heart. First, Andre Previn (1929-2019), to whom the violinist was married for several years, and with whom she remained close friends until his death. A jazz pianist, conductor and composer, the multifaceted talents of this great musician opened up new musical worlds for her. Here she presents his Piano Trio (2009), as well as his Violin Concerto No. 2, composed in 2010 for solo violin, string orchestra and harpsichord, a nod to Baroque music and to an instrument that is unusual in contemporary music ensembles. Another instrument featured outside of it's normal context is the double bass: Anne-Sophie Mutter asked Sebastian Currier to write a duo for her and double bassist Roman Patkolo, one of the scholarship recipients of her foundation. For this commission Currier wrote Ringtone Variations: "I wanted to work with material that is very simple and familiar to everyone", says Currier. "This is the only piece where, if a phone went off in the audience, suddenly you have a new variation!" UPC: 3701624512555Label: AlphaRelease Date: 8.21.26Format: Vinyl

"A performer of near-superhuman technical prowess" (The New York Times), pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin is known worldwide for his unrivalled blend of consummate musicianship and brilliant technique in the great works of the established repertoire, as well as for his intrepid exploration of the rarities of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries - in concert and on recordings - earning his place as a true icon of the piano. In 2023, the label released Hamelin's recording of Faure's Nocturnes & Barcarolles plus the four-hand Dolly suite, played with his wife Cathy Fuller. In 2022, Hyperion released a double album of C.P.E. Bach's Sonatas & Rondos, which received wide critical acclaim and chart success. Featuring nine original pieces, Hamelin's 2024 album, New Piano Works, is a survey of some of his own recent works, exhibiting his formidable skill as a composer-pianist whose music imaginatively taps into his musical forebears. Violinist Miranda Cuckson has achieved an international reputation as a leading champion of contemporary music and living composers in a remarkably wide range of styles. Known for her organic expressivity, dexterous virtuosity, musical insight, brilliant programming, and love for music, she is acclaimed internationally as a soloist and collaborator. In addition to frequent performances throughout the United States and high-profile appearances in Vienna, Berlin, and other European cultural centers, she has gained an international fan base through her many recordings for Urlicht AudioVisual, ECM Records, and Centaur. In her eponymous first release on vinyl, Miranda plays a new work written for her by a rising star among composers, Stewart Goodyear. "Solo: A Suite for Solo Violin" is an engaging and accessible work that incorporates traditional classical forms with elements of jazz and music that draws on the sounds of his Trinidadian roots. The other side of the LP contains two twentieth century avant-garde masterpieces: "Mikka S" by composer and architect Iannis Xenakis, a challenging virtuoso work incorporating microtonal glissandi and a range of sonorities that push the technical limits of the instrument, and Franco Donatoni's "Argot", which fuses minimalism, mutation, and gestures that conjure the many influences that shaped him, from folk music to the music of John Cage and Pierre Boulez.Drawn from ultra high definition digital sources and prepared for mastering by Urlicht AudioVisual's Gene Gaudette, Miranda's first LP is being issued in a Direct Metal Mastered, audiophile-quality 180 gram limited edition pressing.

To go along with his lessons, Burchette sold a series of instrumental guitar and electronic records featuring ornate hand-drawn cover designs, complete with listening instructions from the Master himself. Since just his twelfth year, Burchette had been transfixed by the parapsychological, spending as much time reading books on Tibetan mysticism fundamentals as he did practicing guitar, the vibrations of which he used to create tonal pictures and patterns. After time spent teaching classical guitar, Master Wilburn Burchette released seven albums in the seven years spanning 1971 through 1977, before abruptly burning and discarding everything related to his musical explorations.

Ignore the "2" in the title; this is Morton Feldman's 1959 debut album, which by definition means it's a key release in the history of modern classical music. Feldman's association with the New York abstract art scene of the time is made explicit with the cover art by Philip Guston, but it's the music, with it's minimalism and emphasis on tonal color, that most clearly expresses the ethos of his visual artist peers. Perhaps the biggest influence, however-though it's hard to say exactly who influenced whom-is John Cage, whose experiments with chance methods of composition and performance echo in Feldman's graphic notation, which left choices of rhythm and pitch to the performers of his "Projections" and "Intersections" pieces. This release represents the first reissue of this landmark record (a later release, The Early Years, discarded the Guston album art and reshuffled the sequence), and to ensure the truest and clearest listening experience possible, we're pressing New Directions in Music 2 on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records. If you're at all into, or even curious about modern classical, this is one you have to own.

Recorded between the iconic Abbey Road and Polish Radio studios, Hania Rani's original music for Joachim Trier's Cannes and Golden Globe winning, Oscar and Bafta nominated 'Sentimental Value' is a deeply intuitive collaboration, composed before a single frame was edited. Intriguingly Hania worked on the score for Sentimental Value without an edit in hand; instead, she was given a carefully written script and the freedom of her own substantial imagination. The story told in the film oscillates around three characters and the motionless presence of the house, yet the relationships between all these personalities are not fixed, but in progress. Those subtle qualities were at the centre of her attention and became the core topic of numerous discussions with Joachim about the music, the film, and the philosophy behind Sentimental Value. In September 2024, Hania went to Oslo and spent a couple of days in the main film location (the family home in Oslo) with her sound engineer, Agata Dankowska. The film crew was away in France to shoot another scene for the project, so they were allowed to freely explore the space - both visually and sonically. They made field recordings in the building, capturing the sounds of objects and furniture found in the apartment, and they also managed to record a couple of piano pieces. The house plays a significant role in the story, silently witnessing the tangled trajectories of it's residents.

On 22 November 1963 at Idil Biret's US debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Erich Leinsdorf she played Rachmaninoff's 3rd Concerto. The concert was scheduled for 2.00pm. The tragic death of President Kennedy was announced during the concert. Despite the electrified atmosphere which can be sensed in the recording, the audience, many in tears, then heard a stunning performance of the concerto which was broadcast live to the nation from Boston and rebroadcast the next day from New York - "There was a buoyant quality to Idil Biret's playing, a great warmth of tone was in no way dispelled by her technical skill... she gave us power without a bang, emotion without a sentimental tear. There is no question that Miss Biret is one of the most extraordinary musicians and many of her listeners testified to her artistry by giving her a standing ovation." Apart from Idil Biret's "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" performance of Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Erich Leinsdorf on 22 November 1963, another memorable performance of the 3rd Concerto was at the Istanbul Festival in July 1983 with the Leningrad Orchestra conducted by Alexander Dimitreev. After her performance the orchestra's conductor Alexander Dimitriev visited Idil Biret at her home and said the following: "We were quite intrigued when we learnt that you wanted to perform Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto with our orchestra as women rarely play this work. I now want to thank you for your wonderful performance yesterday. There is no woman today in the Soviet Union who can play this work the masterly way you did. The number of men who can do so are limited in number to the fingers of hand." UPC: 747313289929Label: NaxosRelease Date: 8.7.26Format: Vinyl
