The waltz was perhaps the most important thing that the rather level-headed and conservative Johannes Brahms from Hamburg brought back with him from his sojourn in Vienna. In addition to his purely instrumental waltzes for the piano, he also composed the ""Liebeslieder Waltzes"" - uniquely folk like and highly original vocal joyfulness in ¾ time. The lyrics are taken from real life and tell of love, longing, desire, and suffering but also of anger and derision. Just how ideally this music fits in with the workshop atmosphere of the Marlboro Summer Music Festival is fully evident here. The musicians gathered around Rudolf Serkin sing the very finest Brahms - joyous, inspired yet completely relaxed - and reflect light upon all aspects of earthly existence. An excellent choice to complement these emotions is Schubert's penultimate composition ""The Shepherd On The Rock"" D 965. This great and far-too-seldom performed lied is based on three poems, which are performed impressively and with brilliant musicality by the soloist Benita Valente. And last but not least, the addition of the clarinet, which functions both as a soloist as well as imitating the voice, lends the work it's particular charm.

Few orchestral pieces demand precision engineering as much as Richard Strauss's 'An Alpine Symphony.' The Decca recording by Sir Georg Solti and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra was made in 1979, one of the last Decca analog productions before the switch to digital. Solti knew Strauss personally and studied the composer's own recording before taping this uniquely authentic performance in Munich. Recorded by Decca at the Herkulessaal, Munich, in September 1979, the original 1/4-inch, two-track stereo tapes have been mastered by Rainer Maillard and cut by Sidney C. Meyer at Emil Berliner Studios. Pressed on 180g vinyl in gatefold jacket. Decca Pure Analogue Series is limited and numbered. UPC: 028948716043Label: DeccaRelease Date: 6.19.26Format: Vinyl

The LP version: When Baroque Meets Folk EnergyIn 'folk baroque', the music of Georg Philipp Telemann encounters the vibrant dance traditions of central Europe. The program grew out of a collaboration between recorder virtuoso Erik Bosgraaf and the Italian ensemble filoBarocco during the Gottingen International Handel Festival, initiated within the European support programme EEEMERGING+.At the heart of the project lies the fascinating Rostock Manuscript, a historical source long associated with Telemann's fascination with Central European folk traditions. For Bosgraaf and filoBarocco, the manuscript offers the perfect point of departure for exploring the meeting ground between Baroque repertoire and living folk music traditions. The ensemble shares a deep enthusiasm not only for historical performance practice but also for music that retains the energy, spontaneity, and expressive freedom of traditional dance music.Telemann himself was renowned for his openness to musical influences from across Europe. During his travels he encountered Polish and Hanna folk traditions that left a lasting impression on him. In his autobiographical writings, he vividly describes the impact of this music: it's rhythmic vitality, it's improvisatory spirit, and it's powerful melodic expression. These qualities fascinated him and found their way, sometimes subtly, sometimes quite directly, into his own compositions.Yet reconstructing the sound world of the eighteenth century presents a unique challenge. Unlike music from the twentieth or twenty-first centuries, there are no recordings to tell us exactly how this repertoire once sounded. Historically informed performance with this repertoire therefore requires re-composition. Musicians must piece together clues from written scores, historical treatises, instrument research, and contemporary descriptions. On the recording 'folk baroque' the musicians expand this process further by drawing inspiration from living folk traditions. Many rhythmic patterns, ornamentations, and expressive gestures that appear in Baroque music still survive today in Central European dance music. These traditions offer valuable insights into how such musical gestures might function in performance. The goal is not to recreate a supposedly 'authentic' past because that would be inherently impossible, but to create a musical interpretation that feels convincing, vibrant, and alive for modern listeners inspired by the timeless melodies of the Rostock Manuscript. For this reason, the program includes elements of improvisation and experimental playing techniques. While this approach may initially seem unusual in a Baroque context, it reflects the spirit of exploration that shaped the music of Telemann's own time. The musical notation in the Rostock Manuscript often provides only a framework rather than a fully fixed sound image. It invites performers to engage creatively with the material and rediscover it's inherent energy. The result is a concert experience that feels both historical and contemporary. The music is rooted in eighteenth-century sources, yet interpreted by musicians who are equally at home in the traditions of early music and in modern sonic experimentation.Ultimately, what connects this repertoire with today's audience is emotion. Instruments and styles may change over time, but the fundamental human passions expressed through music remain the same: joy, melancholy, longing, passion, and the irresistible urge to dance. When listeners begin to grasp the expressive language behind these works, the music suddenly feels remarkably immediate. It ceases to be merely a historical artefact and becomes a living experience, almost as if a sleeping frog had been awakened with a kiss UPC: 5063758701143Label: Brilliant ClassicsRelease Date: 9.4.26Format: Vinyl
Philip Glass is widely regarded as one of the most influential composers of the late 20th century. His work has been dubbed 'minimal music'. Glass himself prefers to describe himself as a composer of 'music with repetitive structures'.Glassworks is the most pleasant craftwork ever from the great minimalist exploiter. Six warm pieces in a succesfull attempt to create a more pop-oriented work. The Philip Glass ensemble performs with an amiably soft-edged minimalist sound, in an almost new-agey vein. Glass anticipated resistance toward the funding of his more expensive projects, so he created a more accessible, and marketable recording. And with success. More than 200K albums were sold in five years. The tracks "Rubric" and "Façades" both appeared in the 2008 documentary about Philippe Petit, Man on Wire. "Floe" was featured on the soundtrack of the 1989 Italian horror film The Church. "Opening" was featured in the American remake of the movie Breathless. Glassworks is available as a limited edition of 2000 individually numbered copies on translucent blue colored vinyl.

The Will of Tongues is the new studio album by Sarah Davachi, and it is certainly her most ambitious to date, spanning over two hours, available as a triple vinyl set, or double compact disc in hardback book style packaging. The album features five new works for historical pipe organs, three choral pieces, a suite of "interludes" for various microtonal ensembles, and a longform chamber piece for strings, organ, and tape. In addition to Davachi performing on organ, the album also features an incredible group of musicians from across the US and Europe, including Whitney Johnson (viola), Eyvind Kang (viola), Lucy Railton (cello), Diapason (an experimental brass ensemble from Los Angeles), Phaedrus (a Renaissance flute consort from Switzerland), and Chamber Choir Ireland. The album engages several different compositional methods and concepts, all rooted in the minimalist tradition from which Davachi primarily operates, but underscoring The Will of Tongues as a combined body of work is a deep reverence for the act of listening. This collection of music is not easy listening, and it's not meant to be - when long durations and a reduction of materials are at play, the ear and mind are forced to confront sound itself and the significant mental spaces that it continually gives rise to. The Will of Tongues is thus a celebration of iterative listening and of extreme confrontation, of intimate aural experience and it's vast psychic horizons.

In this second volume of the ASM Forte Forward series, Anne-Sophie Mutter performs works by two composers close to her heart. First, Andre Previn (1929-2019), to whom the violinist was married for several years, and with whom she remained close friends until his death. A jazz pianist, conductor and composer, the multifaceted talents of this great musician opened up new musical worlds for her. Here she presents his Piano Trio (2009), as well as his Violin Concerto No. 2, composed in 2010 for solo violin, string orchestra and harpsichord, a nod to Baroque music and to an instrument that is unusual in contemporary music ensembles. Another instrument featured outside of it's normal context is the double bass: Anne-Sophie Mutter asked Sebastian Currier to write a duo for her and double bassist Roman Patkolo, one of the scholarship recipients of her foundation. For this commission Currier wrote Ringtone Variations: "I wanted to work with material that is very simple and familiar to everyone", says Currier. "This is the only piece where, if a phone went off in the audience, suddenly you have a new variation!" UPC: 3701624512555Label: AlphaRelease Date: 8.21.26Format: Vinyl

Ignore the "2" in the title; this is Morton Feldman's 1959 debut album, which by definition means it's a key release in the history of modern classical music. Feldman's association with the New York abstract art scene of the time is made explicit with the cover art by Philip Guston, but it's the music, with it's minimalism and emphasis on tonal color, that most clearly expresses the ethos of his visual artist peers. Perhaps the biggest influence, however-though it's hard to say exactly who influenced whom-is John Cage, whose experiments with chance methods of composition and performance echo in Feldman's graphic notation, which left choices of rhythm and pitch to the performers of his "Projections" and "Intersections" pieces. This release represents the first reissue of this landmark record (a later release, The Early Years, discarded the Guston album art and reshuffled the sequence), and to ensure the truest and clearest listening experience possible, we're pressing New Directions in Music 2 on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records. If you're at all into, or even curious about modern classical, this is one you have to own.

Recorded between the iconic Abbey Road and Polish Radio studios, Hania Rani's original music for Joachim Trier's Cannes and Golden Globe winning, Oscar and Bafta nominated 'Sentimental Value' is a deeply intuitive collaboration, composed before a single frame was edited. Intriguingly Hania worked on the score for Sentimental Value without an edit in hand; instead, she was given a carefully written script and the freedom of her own substantial imagination. The story told in the film oscillates around three characters and the motionless presence of the house, yet the relationships between all these personalities are not fixed, but in progress. Those subtle qualities were at the centre of her attention and became the core topic of numerous discussions with Joachim about the music, the film, and the philosophy behind Sentimental Value. In September 2024, Hania went to Oslo and spent a couple of days in the main film location (the family home in Oslo) with her sound engineer, Agata Dankowska. The film crew was away in France to shoot another scene for the project, so they were allowed to freely explore the space - both visually and sonically. They made field recordings in the building, capturing the sounds of objects and furniture found in the apartment, and they also managed to record a couple of piano pieces. The house plays a significant role in the story, silently witnessing the tangled trajectories of it's residents.
