The musicians are aiming high with their desire for a ""Super Session"", for it's not something that can be planned. Only when the time, place, and audience play along, when one's lucky star is shining brightly, and the musicians have a good day, then one of music's great moments might be captured on tape. Not forgetting the recording technicians who also have to be in the mood! In 1968 this all happened to be the case with the majority of the nine numbers on the Columbia LP: ""Season Of The Witch"" (written by Donovan) in it's present version is one of them, as well as ""You Don't Love Me"" and the Dylan classic ""It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry"". All in all, one must consider the numbers with Steve Stills as most successful in the sense of a session because here each musician inspires the others. In the super session with Kooper and Bloomfield, the guitarist stands in the limelight while the other musicians back him up.Very often the three soloists even surpass the greatest moments of their own groups (Al Kooper's Blood, Sweat & Tears; Mike Bloomfield's Electric Flag; Steven Stills's Buffalo Springfield). In 1968 the magazine Rolling Stone judged this album to be one of the best releases of the year: an accolade which is completely justified and is still valid to this day. What better reason to get your copy of this ""highly recommended"" album without delay.."" Production: Al Kooper."" ""Super Session"" - Mike Bloomfield, Steven Stills (el-g); Al Kooper (p, org, voc, g, el-g); Barry Goldberg (el-p); Harvey Brooks (b); Eddie Hoh (dr), a.o.."" standard sleeve

?John Lee Hooker is not only a mystery but also an interesting man to study. Some, like the author Jacques Demêtre called the musician from Mississippi » the rawest and African of all blues players from a musical point of view«, while the critic Net Hentoff was awestruck by Hooker's unfiltered power of expression that could scare the pants off a listener taken unawares. The numbers on this LP bear witness to the fact that Hooker's musical language could stir one's emotions deeply, even without the meaty 'boom boom'. Each title is like a raw diamond, which is intentionally uncut and is to be perceived with directness. With a stutter and a slur in his speech, the singer declaims his song over a twangy guitar, which is driven along by the rhythmic meter. A final farewell is taken sluggishly and sullenly in the forthright text of 'You Lost A Good Man', and even a song without words ('Misbelieving Baby') ponders a question in a purely instrumental monologue. Apart from a dash of boogie ('Pouring Down Rain') Hooker avoids all manner of sweet sounds and harmonies. He remains austerely raw, mercilessly honest, occasionally unforgiving and denies all thoughts of any kind regarding going 'back to the roots'. This sound IS the root of it all.

When an international weekly magazine calls a musician "the white pope of black art", then it sounds suspiciously like charitableness towards a blues musician in his prime, whose good years are in the past. As if! In the case of Johnny Winter, the reviews of his 2011 tour were just as glowing as in his early years, when Rolling Stone magazine described the gaunt Mississippi bard as "a cross-eyed albino with long fleecy hair playing some of the gutsiest fluid blues guitar you have ever heard". Intentional or not: Winter was able to win for himself some of the 'rocker' laurels that were reserved for the young Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. But Winter let everyone know that he was only interested in the blues, gutsy, evoking Howlin' Wolf's and Muddy Waters' growling groove, yet nimble-fingered enough on the strings to conjure up astoundingly sleek garlands of sound that fit precisely into each bar of music.Winter remains pretty cool when people attempt to identify personal afflictions in his music: -»When I play blues, I feel good-« he stated recently to a journalist. That the same goes for over 40 years ago is substantiated by both sides of this debut album..

The blues is perhaps one of the most private things from which a human being can suffer. However, to play the blues, and thus to express a man's innermost feelings and state of mind, is probably the most important task of black music. With Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, we have two disciples from the world of the blues who express their highly personal blues with profound instrumental proficiency. The enormously talented, self-taught guitarist Buddy Guy was ranked 23rd in Rolling Stones magazine's list "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", and several times he was awarded one of the coveted Grammy awards. Junior Wells entered Muddy Waters' 'academy' at the tender age of 18 and played the blues harp with enormous passion and virtuosity. In this recording, the musicians condense their rock playing over a bone-dry bass line to create a mantra-like funky style ('A Man Of Many Words'), passing on with fleet-footed steps to a slender chirping sound on the mandolin with a 12-bar blues construction and creating an earthy groove ('T-Bone Shuffle'). Then the duo works perseveringly on an unrelenting chord ('A Poor Man's Plea'), only to return to two numbers that pulsate forcefully with a snappy and jagged offbeat ('This Old Fool'). The handpicked band, among them being co-producer Eric Clapton who is eternalized on the rhythm and bottleneck guitar, and the voodoo rocker Dr. John who occasionally contributes his magic on the keyboard, make this album a truly collectible sound experience. Delbert McClinton has performed on Austin City Limits 7 times. This 1982 performance is considered one of his more legendary performances. You can call Delbert's music "Texas roadhouse blues" if you want to, but you might as well give up trying to pin a label on this guy. He was born in Lubbock, but you'd never know it from the sound of that growling, gravelly, funky voice. Maybe growing up in Fort Worth explains the difference, since he developed his R&B chops early-on playing in the house band at Jack's Place, a notorious, rough-and-rowdy late-night joint. That's where they shared the stage with the likes of legends Bobby Blue Bland and the infamous Jimmy Reed, Delbert's main man. He wandered out to L.A. for awhile and helped propel Emmylou Harris's career with his song, "Two More Bottles of Wine," then released two classic pre -"progressive country" albums with partner Glen Clark. -Terry Lickona (Producer Austin City Limitsr)Available on vinyl for the first time, this title is also available on CD, DVD and CD/DVD combo pack.

Vinyl LP pressing. John Lee Hooker, known as "The King of the Boogie" and "the Boogie Man", was a true Blues icon. Quality rather than quantity is the key to Hooker's singular success. He did not have a huge number of hits in the R&B chart, but those that did make a major impact would provide some of the key musical architecture for future blues and rock artists. When he came to prominence in the late '40s, he was playing blues in a way that was regarded as somewhat spare, his dark repetitive vocals supported only by his amplified guitar and his stamping foot. His was no overnight stardom. Having paid his dues over many years, once he started recording, he did so prolifically. This fine collection of his earlier songs demonstrates Hooker's blues virtuosity while at the same time establishing his work as a signpost to a deeper understanding of the British Blues explosion. It features a host of early hits including the iconic No.1's "Boogie Chillen'" and "I'm In The Mood", alongside "Hoogie Boogie", "Hobo Blues", "Crawlin' King Snake", "Dimples", "No Shoes" and, naturally, the timeless "Boom Boom"

Albert Castiglia isn't pulling any punches on Grits & Glory, his latest solo studio album on Gulf Coast Records, recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. The record feels like a full-circle moment - reconnecting Albert with the wide-eyed, guitar-slinging kid from New York whose world was flipped from black and white to technicolor by an 8-track of Rubber Soul on the way to a ball game. That spark of curiosity sent him chasing sounds and players - Jeff Beck, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page - whose influence has echoed through Castiglia's playing ever since. British blues always felt essential to his DNA... just out of reach. Until now. Clear Translucent Vinyl

Vinyl LP reissue. One of the truly classic blues albums of the 1960s, and one of the first to successfully capture the smoky ambience of a night at a West Side nightspot. The Monday blues boys-guitarist Buddy Guy, bassist Jack Myers, drummer Billy Warren-join Wells on his harp to create this raw, gutsy, uninhibited sound, yielding melodic memory-makers such as "Snatch it Back and Hold it," "You Don't Love Me, Baby," "Chitlin con Carne," and others. Widely hailed as one of Wells's finest achievements, the album has gone on to be Delmark's highest-selling release of all time. Limited blue vinyl LP pressing. Magic Sam a/k/a Sam Maghett was a revolutionary guitarist and one of Chicago's legendary West Side natural blues players. A Mississippi native, the self taught musician would move to Chicago in 1950, playing small clubs and making a name for himself in short order. His uncle acclaimed bluesman Shakey Jake a/k/a James Harris, would get Sam set up in the burgeoning nightclub circuit, eventually playing between sets with major blues greats like Muddy Waters. As his local reputation as a solid blues guitarist would take hold, he signed a deal with Cobra Records as he kicked things off with the stellar double sided blues hit single "All Your Love" and "Love Me With A Feeling" in 1957. More blues belters followed like "All Night Long." As he was beginning to achieve sales and national attention, he was drafted into the army. Upon his return, he moved over to Mel London's Chief Records label, where he followed up with great blues rockers like "Square Dance Part One" "My Love Is Your Love" "Do The Camel Walk" and a stunning cover of Fats Domino's "Every Night About This Time." He would go on to release more solid recordings for Chief and Crash Records, as well as a super rare single "Respect Me Baby" with Shakey Jake into the mid-sixties. Towards the end of the decade, Sam was truly gaining much acclaim by playing bigger venues and blues festivals, but as fate would have it, Magic Sam suffered a heart attack and his brilliance was silenced in 1969. Today, Magic Sam is revered internationally and considered one of the founders of the West Side Guitar blues sound. His music is second to none, as witnessed with this incredible collection of his finest sides from the Cobra, Chief, Crash and Paula Records era.
