Debut album by LA saxophonist / flautist co-produced by Carlos Niño documents a transformative recovery from major illness. By no means a secret, but certainly in the category of IYKYK, saxophonist/flautist Aaron Shaw is one of Los Angeles's brightest young jazz musicians. A player's player, and frequent fixture at The World Stage in Leimert Park, Shaw has collaborated with the likes of Anderson Paak, Dave Chapelle, Herbie Hancock, Mary J. Blige, and Shawn Mendes.

Sunrise is Rudolph's 63rd release as a leader/co-leader and the result is music that exists on it's own terms, reflecting the wonderful alchemy of the artists as they spontaneously create dialogues, unique orchestrations, and sonic moods in an organic way. This bold, experimental approach is an undercurrent that runs throughout Rudolph's diverse career. As Rudolph explains: "With every record I make, I try to do something have I not done before." Sunrise arrives on the heels of the percussionist's 2025 trio release Beingness with NEA Jazz masters Dave Liebman and Billy Hart. "Creating and spending time with Billy and Dave added to what I learned from so many great elder musicians. I am so fortunate to have been mentored by artists like Yusef Lateef and Don Cherry. What they shared is much more than information; it is a deep kind of transmission of creative attitude and spirit," says Rudolph. "What I gleaned from all my mentors is how important it is to infuse each note of the music with one's spirit, soul and sincere feeling."

Alto saxophonist and flutist Alan Braufman first emerged as a singular voice in New York's 1970s loft-jazz scene with his 1975 debut Valley of Search, a record that would later be recognized as a landmark of spiritual and free jazz. After decades outside the spotlight, Braufman returned with a new wave of acclaim, releasing two highly regarded albums in 2020 and 2024 that reestablished him as both an essential elder and a vital contemporary presence-long described as "a legend in free music" (Gilles Peterson / BBC).Recorded in a single day in the fall of 2025, Anthem for Peace is a fully new studio album that captures Braufman in the present tense. Leading a quartet with vibraphonist Patricia Brennan, bassist Luke Stewart, and drummer Chad Taylor, he delivers concise, hook-forward compositions that move fluidly between gospel-tinged anthems, buoyant post-bop, and hypnotic, eastern-influenced themes. Brennan's vibraphone-shimmering acoustically and occasionally treated electronically-adds depth and color, while Stewart and Taylor form a deeply locked, responsive rhythm section. The result is music that is "playful and light, yet texturally dense" (NPR): optimistic, focused, and driven by a clear sense of forward motion.

Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). Recorded at the Coltrane Studio, Dix Hills, New York on November 8, 1970 and live at the Village Gate, New York, New York on July 4, 1970. Originally released on Impulse (9203). Includes liner notes by Alice Coltrane. The death of John Coltrane left not only a musical, but a spiritual void among his many followers and admirers. By aligning himself with the searchers among the new generation, John Coltrane legitimized their quest and set a daunting standard of excellence for those who experiment outside the mainstream of modern jazz. Among those searchers was young Alice McLeod of Detroit, a virtuoso on the vibraphone, piano, organ and harp. John Coltrane had always expressed a fondness for the harp, and while young McLeod never did bring that instrument into the context of Trane's working groups, she did bring her rolling, ecstatic style of piano to bear in the saxophonist's last quartets and quintets as Mrs. Alice Coltrane. JOURNEY IN SATCHIDANANDA, recorded in the fall of 1970, is a serene, composed meditation on the lessons of the 1960's, a mystical work of enduring sweetness and spiritual longing. The concluding cut "Isis And Osiris" (recorded earlier that summer at the Village Gate), is a global village of texture and song, animated by Pharaoh Sanders' gently wafting soprano and Rashied Ali's quicksilver brushwork, as Vishnu Wood's feathery oud, Charlie Haden's woody bass and Coltrane's sweeping harp combine to create a dreamy vortex of sound. The title cut and "Shiva-Loka"-centered around Cecil McBee's sonorous, lyric bass vamps and Tulsi's droning tambourine-are gorgeous evocations of modal jazz and Indian ragas, again exploiting the contrast between Sanders' reedy chants and Coltrane's blissful arpeggios. And then there's "Stopover Bombay" and "Something About John Coltrane, " which reveal the melodious symmetry of Alice Coltrane's piano playing, a singular style deeply imbued in the old time testimonies of the spirituals and the blues.

Mal Waldron's first tribute to Billie Holiday, titled Left Alone, was recorded in 1959, mere months before the singer's death. He returned to salute the legendary vocalist on several occasions since then, with this recording likely being his final tribute, recorded less than a year before his own death. Waldron, who worked with Holiday during her last years, is intimately familiar with her takes of the six standards heard on this disc, along with her own 'Lady Sings the Blues.' Archie Shepp's often gritty tenor sax is reminiscent of the texture of Holiday's voice, yet he perfectly complements Waldron's lush piano. They also pack a punch with their stark performance of 'Left Alone' (Shepp's occasional reed squeaks seem deliberate, as if to imitate breaks in her voice). Waldron also recites Holiday's lyrics set to his composition at the conclusion of the LP. Shepp switches to soprano sax for an emotional take of 'Everything Happens to Me' and 'I Only Have Eyes for You,' with the latter song sounding as if the unheard singer is being ignored by her love interest. Shepp's 'Blues for 52nd Street' is both sassy and swinging. This instrumental salute to Billie Holiday is one of the best albums ever to honour her memory.

'S Make It, recorded in 1964 and released the following year on Limelight, captures drummer Art Blakey leading a transitional edition of his Jazz Messengers. At the time, Blakey was navigating the departure of several key members and searching for a new configuration, resulting in a distinctive short-lived lineup within the band's long history. The sextet featured Lee Morgan (trumpet,) Curtis Fuller (trombone,) John Gilmore (tenor saxophone,) John Hicks (piano,) and Victor Sproles (bass.) Together, they delivered a hard-driving program that reflects both Blakey's established hard-bop intensity and the shifting personnel landscape of the mid-1960s Messengers. Blakey's drumming anchors the session throughout with the galvanic rhythmic command that defined his leadership across decades. Crazy World is the bold and genre-blurring new album from As Is, the Philadelphia-based project fronted by vocalist Stacey Schulman and guitarist Al Schulman. This stunning release fuses vocal jazz with poetic commentary, rich orchestration, and experimental textures - including two compositions that creatively integrate AI-generated instrumentation. From the soaring opener "From This Very Moment On" featuring Grammy-nominated artist Kokayi, to a haunting jazz reinterpretation of "Tiny Dancer," and the aching balladry of "A House Is Not a Home," Crazy World balances technical artistry with emotional urgency. With appearances by Jeff "Tain" Watts, Gil Goldstein, Corcoran Holt, and a full string section, the album delivers both depth and dynamism. Tracks like "PrAilude" and "Children's Games" explore the intersection of humanity and machine - using Suno AI to challenge how we perceive musical authorship, while still grounded in melodic integrity and lyrical intention. Whether you're a jazz collector, audiophile, or a fan of modern vocalists pushing boundaries, Crazy World is a daring, deeply musical experience.

Released on Verve in 1965, The Shadow of Your Smile captures Astrud Gilberto in the early ascent of her solo career, placing her understated, conversational vocal style at the center of lush yet subtle arrangements by Don Sebesky and Klaus Ogerman that emphasize clarity, warmth, and emotional transparency across bossa nova, jazz, and mid-’60s pop material. Produced by Creed Taylor, the album frames her soft, unforced delivery with gentle orchestral color, whether on the newly minted standard of the title track, Brazilian selections, or contemporary ballads, allowing the nuances of her timbre and phrasing to carry the music. As a whole, it marks a key moment in Gilberto’s evolution from guest vocalist to fully realized solo artist and affirms her as a defining voice of the bossa nova era.

Dizzy Gillespie wrote his classic 'A Night in Tunisia' in 1942 when he was working with Benny Carter. Thirty-four years later the two recorded it together for this album and gave it one of it's most luminous performances. In this encounter, Carter, at 70, and Gillespie, at 60, were inspired to some of the best playing of what might be described as their later years if it weren't for the fact that, at this writing, both were going strong into the 1990s.Among the pieces are two less well-known masterpieces, Gillespie's 'Constantinople' and Carter's 'The Courtship.' Portrait in Jazz was Bill Evans' third album as a leader, following New Jazz Conceptions (1956) and Everybody Digs Bill Evans (1958). It was also Evans' first album as a leader with the talented bassist Scott LaFaro. Their superb interaction is evident from the very first track, and Evans was certainly aware of this. The collaboration between Evans and LaFaro would reach it's peak with their recordings made in June 1961 at the Village Vanguard in New York City. LaFaro died shortly afterward in a car accident (July 6, 1961), at the age of 25.

Ready yourselves, jazz aficionados, for modal piano brilliance, Bill Evans style! Released in 1977, Bill Evans - Quintessence, has the maestro diving headfirst into a lush, melodic hornscape - an elegant, smoky surprise.Let's start with the man himself. By 1977, Bill Evans was less of a pianist and more of a philosopher with 88 keys. His technique? Still gentle, still whispery, still capable of melting diamonds. But here, he brings his lyrical poetry into a new context: a quintet. That's right - not just his beloved trio format, but a quintet, people. No safety net. No piano bench to hide behind. Just sheer harmonic magic. The Evans dream team of supporting players was a stellar lineup. Starting with Harold Land (tenor sax) - The West Coast legend whose tone is so smooth it could pass as jazz-flavored gelato. Warm, reflective, and the perfect foil to Evans' crystalline touch. Next, there's Kenny Burrell (guitar). Playing with such subtlety you'd swear he was painting chords with a sable brush. Never flashy, always perfect. On bass, Ray Brown - The anchor of jazz itself. You want groove? He'll give you groove. You want soul? He's got that in spades too. And on drums, Philly Joe Jones. Because if you're gonna swing, you call the guy who made Miles Davis' band sweat.Together, they form a unit so tight it's basically a telepathic jazz circle. They're not just supporting Bill - they're expanding him! What's On the Menu?'Sweet Dulcinea' - A tune that proves you don't need to play fast to say something profound.'Bass Face' - Ray Brown gets the spotlight, and boy does he shine.'Martina' - A waltz so beautiful it should come with a warning label: may cause reflective gazing into middle distance.'Second Time Around' - A standard for an album that's all about elegance, subtle swing, and refined musicianship.'A Child Is Born' - The kind of rendition that makes you think maybe the world isn't so bad after all.So why add Quintessence to your collection?Because this is Bill Evans unplugged from the trio comfort zone, letting his lush harmonic sensibilities dance with top-tier horn players and rhythm gods. This album is meditative but never sleepy, introspective but never self-indulgent. It's rich, warm, and brimming with the quiet confidence of a master stretching his wings just because he can. This reissue brims with superior quality. Mastering by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at Acoustech Mastering, double LP cut at 45 RPM and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings! Plus it's housed in a Stoughton Printing Old Style Tip-On gatefold jacket with scuff-resistant matte finish.Bottom line, if your jazz collection is missing Quintessence, it's like owning a Picasso with a blank corner. This is the kind of record that sneaks up on you - not flashy, but unforgettable. Go ahead. You deserve this kind of quintet magic.Mastering by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at Acoustech MasteringDouble LP cut at 45 RPM and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings!Stoughton Printing Old Style Tip-On gatefold jacket with scuff-resistant matte finish UPC: 753088208072Label: Analogue Prod.Release Date: 4.24.26Format: Vinyl
Billie Holiday is captured live at Storyville in Boston in 1951 and 1953. The discreet recordings capture Lady Day in prime emotive voice. The recordings included on the classic album Lady Sings the Blues come from two different studio dates, a complete session recorded in 1956, and four tunes from a 1954 date. An additional track from the latter session has also been added here as a bonus. The emphasis on both sessions is placed on Billie's singing. Although important musicians are present on both dates (Charlie Shavers, Tony Scott, Paul Quinichette and Wynton Kelly, on the 1956 session, and Harry "Sweets" Edison, Willie Smith and Barney Kessel, on the 1954 date), little room is left for any instrumental improvisation. Trumpeter Blue Mitchell's soulful, swinging style embodied the Blue Note ethos. His 1964 debut for the label, The Thing To Do, showcased his sound across a diverse set of tunes from hard bop to ballads to Calypso with an exceptional quintet featuring Junior Cook (tenor saxophone,) Chick Corea (piano,) Gene Taylor (bass,) and Al Foster (drums.) This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
