Gunar Letzbor and his ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria present two magnificent major works from two important Baroque centres of Catholic church music north of the Alps: from Salzburg comes Biber's multi-choir Vespers for 32 voices, which splendidly demonstrates the importance of Salzburg Cathedral. Benedikt Anton Aufschnaiter was Kapellmeister at Passau Cathedral, and his magnificent festive mass Missa Laetamur in ea is heard as a world premiere recording. The instrumentation of the Ars Antiqua Austria ensemble is based on that of the Salzburg Cathedral Choir at the time of Biber, and Letzbor adds the soprano and alto voices of the St. Florian Boys' Choir to the outstanding soloists. This allows Biber's Vespers in particular to shine in magnificent Baroque splendor, but never in an overloaded way - the various choirs of singers, trumpets with timpani, cornets and strings sound very transparent and balanced, allowing the listener to follow the text and musical subtleties perfectly. These recordings exemplify Karajan's mastery of the expansive forms and forces of late Romanticism. Two Bruckner symphonies recorded in 1970 and 1971 show just how much the orchestra's musical signature had changed since the recordings of the 1950s. The pitch had historically always been a little higher in Berlin, but under Karajan's leadership the orchestra lightened it's palette, finding a balance in the medium high range that was absolutely foreign to the Germanic tradition. In Berlin, Karajan was drawing straight lines, unbending verticals, clear designs, smooth slopes - building his orchestra up layer by layer, developing the sound he was after, aided by the supreme legato playing of his string section. In addition, any soloistic leanings had been eliminated: the Philharmonic now played as a single instrument, and when the recordings of the 1970s were released more than one music-lover compared it to an organ. Absolute harmony was achieved in the above-mentioned Bruckner symphonies Nos. 4 and 7, the sheer perfection of whose sound is almost unearthly. Herbert von Karajan, the emblematic conductor of the post-war years, did not record Mozart's final six symphonies as a group until September 1970 - in EMI sessions presided over by French producer Michel Glotz, a close friend and colleague. There are some subtle inflections to the Karajan-Berlin sound here: we hear the Philharmoniker's usual silken texture, wonderfully enveloping and accomplished, but here it is more luminous, less sombre and untamed than in the DG recordings. This is nonetheless a fully symphonic Mozart, not deprived of urgency, but with a serious-minded and dignified radiance. Supple and organic, the phrases are steeped in the legato for which Karajan was famed. His introductions are solemn and noble (Nos. 36 and 39), his Andantes and Adagios take a metaphysical turn, and his Menuettos are envisaged almost as interludes - to astonishing effect in Symphony No. 36 - but it is in the finales (the 'Haffner', G minor and 'Jupiter') that Karajan is at his most irresistible. When Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen died in 1728, his former Kapellmeister had not forgotten the five brilliant years he had spent in the prince's service. Although the score is lost, the wordbook and other sources of information have now made it possible to reconstruct the work. Concise, lyrical and expertly balanced, the work moves from an autumnal opening through urgency and rhapsodic reflection to a characterful set of variations. The program concludes with a rarity: the unfinished Allegro of a second Mozart clarinet quintet, completed by Duncan Druce, offering an intriguing glimpse of a work Mozart never completed. Performed by the Gaudier Ensemble with clarinettist Richard Hosford, this recording combines stylistic authority with warm, natural chamber sound, the clarinet's expressive range and it's evolution across two centuries.
