It is brilliant in nature, especially the finale. It foreshadows in places the great Sinfonia Concertante K364, but does not match the grandeur of that work. No.24 K491 from 1786 is one of the greatest of Mozart's concertos. The dark, turbulent and tragic mood undoubtedly had an influence on Beethoven's C minor concerto. In 1696, the Salzburg court conductor Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber described his print of seven chamber suites ("Partien") for two string instruments and basso continuo as "artful vocal harmony" in ornate Latin. These trio sonatas are of a special kind, because the two upper voices are not limited to the typical imitations practised in Italy at that time, but Biber allows the solo voices to be played in a free, expressive manner. He allows them to shine in a different light in virtuoso interplay above the bass foundation, repeatedly in full-bodied polyphony or in chords. Vivaldi's famous Four Seasons are dedicated to Count Wenzel von Morzin from Prague. In 1718, he traveled to Venice with his 'virtuosissimo orchestra' and hired Vivaldi as 'maestro di musica italiano'. This marked the beginning of an era of close musical exchange between Venice and Prague. This relationship, which shaped an entire generation of Czech composers, is the focus of Vivaldi in Prague. The program includes concertos by Frantisek Jiránek, who was employed in Count Morzin's chapel and studied in Vivaldi's circle in Venice from 1724 to 1726, and by AntonÃn Reichenauer, whose musical thinking was strongly influenced by Vivaldi's school. The program is complemented by a bassoon concerto by Vivaldi dedicated to Count Morzin, an aria from a Vivaldi opera performed in Prague in 1730, and two arias from Vivaldi pasticcios reconstructed by Robert Rawson for this production. These recordings exemplify Karajan's mastery of the expansive forms and forces of late Romanticism. Two Bruckner symphonies recorded in 1970 and 1971 show just how much the orchestra's musical signature had changed since the recordings of the 1950s. The pitch had historically always been a little higher in Berlin, but under Karajan's leadership the orchestra lightened it's palette, finding a balance in the medium high range that was absolutely foreign to the Germanic tradition. In Berlin, Karajan was drawing straight lines, unbending verticals, clear designs, smooth slopes - building his orchestra up layer by layer, developing the sound he was after, aided by the supreme legato playing of his string section. In addition, any soloistic leanings had been eliminated: the Philharmonic now played as a single instrument, and when the recordings of the 1970s were released more than one music-lover compared it to an organ. There are some subtle inflections to the Karajan-Berlin sound here: we hear the Philharmoniker's usual silken texture, wonderfully enveloping and accomplished, but here it is more luminous, less sombre and untamed than in the DG recordings. This is nonetheless a fully symphonic Mozart, not deprived of urgency, but with a serious-minded and dignified radiance. Supple and organic, the phrases are steeped in the legato for which Karajan was famed. His introductions are solemn and noble (Nos. 36 and 39), his Andantes and Adagios take a metaphysical turn, and his Menuettos are envisaged almost as interludes - to astonishing effect in Symphony No. 36 - but it is in the finales (the 'Haffner', G minor and 'Jupiter') that Karajan is at his most irresistible. The renowned music historian Charles Burney counted Giovanni Rubinelli (1753-1829) among the three great castrato voices of the late 18th century. At a time when the era of opera seria and castrati was drawing to a close, Rubinelli was one of it's last great protagonists. Numerous composers wrote specifically for his voice, which was not the favored high soprano voice of a castrato, but that of a contralto. This program traces Rubinelli's artistic career. He made his debut in Ludwigsburg at the age of 16 in Calliroe by Antonio Sacchini, sang in Antonio Salieri's Europa riconosciuta at the inauguration of La Scala in Milan in 1778, and made guest appearances in London in the late 1780s, performing in Handel's Julius Caesar, among other works.
