Nikolaus Harnoncourt's relationship with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was one of the most transformative partnerships in modern orchestral history, lasting 38 years and totalling 276 concerts. Nikolaus Harnoncourt was one of the most influential conductors of the 20th century, a pioneer who redefined how we listen to music. A cellist by training, he first revolutionised Baroque performance with his own Concentus musicus Wien, before seeking an ensemble that could bring the same spirit of discovery to the Classical and Romantic repertoire. His encounter in 1986 with the young Chamber Orchestra of Europe was the beginning of a unique artistic partnership. Harnoncourt demanded extremes of colour, tension and risk, challenging the musicians to abandon routine and rediscover the radical force of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert or Schumann. What began as a trial evolved into decades of groundbreaking concerts, operas and recordings, from revelatory Beethoven cycles to Schumann and even Gershwin. Their collaboration not only transformed the orchestra but also left a lasting mark on performance history, setting interpretative standards that continue to inspire musicians worldwide.

Augustin Dumay presents a milestone recording dedicated to Johannes Brahms, featuring the Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77 paired with the Horn Trio in E-flat major, Op. 40. For the acclaimed violinist, this recording marks the culmination of a lifelong relationship with Brahms. Dumay first performed the concerto's finale at age 13 to win his First Prize at the Paris Conservatoire, and later received pivotal encouragement from Herbert von Karajan, who praised his natural grasp of Brahms' grand dramatic discourse. Having chosen to wait until age 77 to record this masterwork, Dumay brings a lifetime of musical maturity and reflective depth to the score. The composition of Mahler's second symphony took six years, starting life as a symphonic poem 'Totenfeier' completed in 1888. In 1890 Mahler added additional movements, completing what had become his second symphony in 1894. The opening movement, which was previously the symphonic poem, depicts the funeral march of the hero who died at the conclusion of the first symphony. The following movements depict periods in the hero's life, setting words from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, and the symphony ends with an apocalyptic setting of Klopstock, to which Mahler added the line ""I shall die in order to live."" The symphony ends with a blaze of glorious sound with the soloist, chorus, orchestra, including organ. A performance of this work is a profoundly moving experience, some would say a shattering experience, such is it's sheer emotional power. This performance from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra lead by Sir Donald Runnicles was recorded live in Edinburgh's Usher Hall on 1st March 2026 and was an unforgettable concert.
