San Francisco's The Holy Kiss rises from the grave to deliver their final recording on vinyl for the first time. Recorded in 2009 by Skot Brown (The Phantom Limbs, Altar de Fey) and previously released on 50 handmade CD-Rs, Gunslinger is a raucous slab of The Holy Kiss' finest hour, featuring four songs that mix incendiary blues with blood, sweat, and a heavy dose of The Birthday Party. The title track of the 12", "Gunslinger," is a cover of a Bo Diddley song arranged by the band to suit their desire for melodic cacophony. Frontman Matty Rue Morgue sings from the soul in dark sunglasses, while "drummer Nick Ott [looms] like a giant over an elfin drum kit while assaulting the skins feverishly enough to risk spontaneous combustion" (Tatiana Simonian, L.A. Weekly). Officially formed in 2000, the dark humored, old-fashioned, and well-tailored quartet, "makes a dark and sweetly discordant murder ballad inspired racket that's perfect for conjuring the limbo-treading spirits of the cheats, crazies, drunks and other societal castaways the band likes to sing about in it's shadowy, Dickensian ditties" (Bill Picture, San Francisco Chronicle).The Gunslinger release also contains a bonus 7" of solo recordings made by Matty Rue Morgue in 2009, just a few years before his untimely death in 2015. There are two songs written by Matty and one song by The Holy Kiss ("Go Head N Count 'Em") re-arranged for solo acoustic guitar. In his version of "Go Head N Count Em," played with love and deep respect for the blues tradition, Matty channels Lightnin' Hopkins and Lux Interior in equal measure. Harmacy (30th Anniversary Expanded Edition) finally makes Sebadoh's seminal 1996 indie-rock album available again, and adds 16 bonus tracks, including alternate versions, rare B-sides, BBC sessions, and live material from the Harmacy era.Sebadoh was formed in 1986 in Northampton, Massachusetts, by Eric Gaffney and Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr., The Folk Implosion), with multi-instrumentalist Jason Loewenstein completing the line-up in 1989, and Bob Fay taking Gaffney's spot in 1994. By 1994, the band had released five albums and more or less changed the pockmarked face of indie rock. Their albums were mostly home recordings, decried for their lack of sharp production, but embraced by fans of Barlow's intimate songwriting style, which owed as much to Joni Mitchell as Bob Mould. In 1996 Harmacy, their breakout sixth album, arrived, finding Sebadoh as conflicted as ever: torn between screaming punk and gentle crooning, replete with highly personal songs guaranteed to bring down even the most super-charged midnight ravers. Released in the wake of The Folk Implosion's Top 40 hit "Natural One," Harmacy became Sebadoh's first charting album in the U.S., and yielded the hit "Ocean." Interview said, "Harmacy is nothing short of a masterpiece." The New Yorker called it a collection of "perfectly crafted, honest (read: ambiguous and emotionally twisted), impassioned songs about love and hate." 'Never exhale' is the sound of a band that hasn't stopped for a breath. DITZ have toured relentlessly since the release of their first album 'The Great Regression'. The songs that form their newest offering were written across Europe, often on off days and in borrowed rehearsal rooms. It could be said that the band treat recording and release of music as an afterthought. Often playing songs live years before their release, tweaking them as they go. The songs on the final record may change before they are ever heard as part of the album. 'Never Exhale' was largely recorded at Holy Mountain studios in London during a freezing cold January. The process was fraught with obstacles, the original plan, to go and record in Rhode Island, was abandoned when DITZ were offered a support tour with IDLES, although the album was still mixed by the originally intended engineer, Seth Manchester (Model/Actriz, Lingua Ignota, Big Brave). The result is an album hardened by the pressure of it's own making. Labored but not loved. The album themes reveal themselves more on further listens. The opening gambit taxi man is an exploration into what it would be like to weigh up your impact of the world. The eponymous taxi man could be seen as a St Peter type figure. Further on the album explores themes of unnecessary hatred and division, Space/Smile and It smells like something died in here, aging, Senor Siniestro and the separation of the physical from reality, The Body As A Structure. It's political, but ultimately personal. More Genet or Kafka than Orwell or Huxley. Sonically the album has it's roots in the usual DITZ influences, classic noise rock such as The Jesus Lizard or Shellac, or the obtuse post punk of the Fall, but also brings in fresh influences. The closing track Britney, could be compared to Radiohead or Mogwai. Overall the album is a clear development from their first effort. A sign of things to come. Harmacy (30th Anniversary Expanded Edition) finally makes Sebadoh's seminal 1996 indie-rock album available again, and adds 16 bonus tracks, including alternate versions, rare B-sides, BBC sessions, and live material from the Harmacy era.Sebadoh was formed in 1986 in Northampton, Massachusetts, by Eric Gaffney and Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr., The Folk Implosion), with multi-instrumentalist Jason Loewenstein completing the line-up in 1989, and Bob Fay taking Gaffney's spot in 1994. By 1994, the band had released five albums and more or less changed the pockmarked face of indie rock. Their albums were mostly home recordings, decried for their lack of sharp production, but embraced by fans of Barlow's intimate songwriting style, which owed as much to Joni Mitchell as Bob Mould. In 1996 Harmacy, their breakout sixth album, arrived, finding Sebadoh as conflicted as ever: torn between screaming punk and gentle crooning, replete with highly personal songs guaranteed to bring down even the most super-charged midnight ravers. Released in the wake of The Folk Implosion's Top 40 hit "Natural One," Harmacy became Sebadoh's first charting album in the U.S., and yielded the hit "Ocean." Interview said, "Harmacy is nothing short of a masterpiece." The New Yorker called it a collection of "perfectly crafted, honest (read: ambiguous and emotionally twisted), impassioned songs about love and hate." Harmacy was hailed as one of the best albums of 1996 by Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, and NME.
