The Grass Roots were, without a doubt, one of the great singles bands of the '60s and early '70s. So, why did it take so long to put together a collection of their complete, original Dunhill/ABC hit singles? Well, there's the little matter of the original mono master tapes. There are various stories about what happened, including one with Dunhill head Jay Lasker pitching all the label's multi-track recordings and mono masters after having deemed them obsolete. And so the classic hit singles by the Grass Roots for the most part only surfaced in their stereo album versions on the various anthologies of the band. But when the going gets tough for a reissue label, Real Gone Music gets going. After a worldwide search for the best sources available, we rounded up all two dozen Dunhill/ABC hit singles (including the censored and uncensored versions of "Let's Live for Today" and their biggest smash, "Midnight Confessions") and put them together into one AMAZING-sounding package that we released back in 2014! Indeed, this collection offers the truest essence of the band-those hook-filled singles in that glorious, original mono sound mixed and mastered to punch through '60s and '70s AM radio. And, by covering the years 1965 to 1973, The Grass Roots: The Complete Original Dunhill/ABC Hit Singles also provides a fantastic overview of the group's tangled history and many line-ups-all meticulously explained by Ed Osborne's liner notes-with late lead singer Rob Grill the closest to a career-long member (their first two singles featured Bill Fulton on vocals). Now, we're thrilled to announce that not only have we resurrected this highly-prized and long out-of-print retrospective on CD, but we are also releasing it on vinyl for the first time, in a blockbuster double-LP set pressed on grass green vinyl and housed inside a gatefold jacket! When Was the Last Time was the last time for Willie Hale a.k.a. Little Beaver, ending the string of excellent albums he cut for the Cat label that have served as catnip for '70s soul-funk collectors. Hale was one of the extraordinarily talented musicians Henry Stone assembled at his Hialeah, FL-based T.K. Records label and it's assorted imprints; among the artists who recorded for Stone were K.C. & the Sunshine Band, Timmy Thomas, Gwen McCrae, Betty Wright, and Benny Latimore... and backing them on a lot of those records was Hale, laying down mellow 'n' funky, jazz-influenced licks on his hollow-body Gibson. You'll hear plenty of that Gibson on this 1976 record, which takes a smoother and more mellow approach than it's predecessors, with keyboard assistance from Timmy Thomas. "Concrete Jungle" is the pick to click, but the whole album exudes that warm, sultry Miami soul sound. We've remastered When Was the Last Time for it's first reissue in over 25 years, and pressed it in emerald green vinyl for it's 50th anniversary! Coke Bottle Clear VinylInjury Reserve was originally a trio, consisting of rappers Ritchie With a T and Stepa J. Groggs and producer Parker Corey. Their mixtapes Live From The Dentist (released in 2015) and Floss (2016) earned them underground buzz, and they capitalized on the attention with their debut album in 2019, the eponymous Injury Reserve.The group's momentum was put on hold when in June of 2020 Groggs tragically passed away. By the Time I Get to Phoenix was largely completed ahead of Groggs' passing with his contributions, and will be the first Injury Reserve music to be released since their eponymous debut album. Ritchie and Corey took the past year to complete the record, and the title has meaning past simply referencing Injury Reserve's hometown. It's an homage to a song that has been covered countless times, which is in line with Injury Reserve's ethos and approach when it comes to creating music. The group pulls from several styles and eras of hip hop, but runs each one through the Injury Reserve lens, putting their own distinct and cohesive sound across their references. True story: about ten years ago we contacted the Mose Allison estate because we had stumbled on a very good recording of a 1966 gig at Club 47 in Boston, and we wanted to release it with the estate's blessing. But, as these things often do, the discussions never came to fruition, and we moved on, but we remained convinced that Mose was definitely an artist best experienced live (as his widow Audre quipped to us at the time, "He always thought that going to a recording studio to record was like having a business card printed"). Well, earlier this year we were contacted by Mose's daughter Amy and the co-producer of this set, Pat Thomas, with a new tape that had surfaced, a 17-track, 70-minute recording of a July 12, 1970 show at the Marin County club The Lion's Share that absolutely BLEW AWAY our earlier, 1966 candidate for release, both with respect to fidelity and performance. In fact, this just might be the definite live Mose Allison document. First of all, the set captures Mose with his preferred Bay Area rhythm section of Clyde Flowers on bass and Lee Charlton (who recorded the show) on drums, the same team that appeared on 1972's live classic Mose in Your Ear. But what sets this record apart is that Mose never thought this date would be released as a live recording. As a result, you're getting Mose at his freest, spryest, and slyest, displaying that impossibly effortless combination of wildly inventive piano riffing, brilliantly sophisticated songwriting (featuring such favorites as "Wild Man on the Loose" and "You Can Count on Me to Do My Part"), and offhand, nonchalant swagger that only he could pull off. As Skip Heller (who saw Mose play about 75 times) puts it in his liner notes, "This is Mose Allison, exactly the way most of us remember." For this very special release, we've commissioned three sets of liner notes, one a fond remembrance from Amy Allison (complete with pictures from the family archives), and one by Pat Thomas offering a rock and roller's perspective on the Allison legacy to go along with Skip's notes. The entire set's been remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, and the album art is drawn from a period concert poster. Available on a double-LP inside a gatefold jacket, or on CD. Kate's music can be described like the best and deepest of freshwater lakes; cool and self-replenishing at depth, but warm and sparkling near the surface. She's done something promising and unique in her latest EP, Shop Girl. Produced and accompanied by Jonathan Rado, along with musicians Sam France, Tim Bernardes, and Alex Heaney, Kate draws influence from Lynsey de Paul and Kate Bush, as well as Ribbons of War, a rock opera by The Extraordinaires, that she's loved since childhood. The EP features five songs which Kate refers to as "songs from an imagined musical". It's the story of a small boutique, it's owner, and the three young women who run the shop. One in particular, called "Bobby," sings the song "Dear Bobby" in a desperate plea to the boy she loves, who is also called... Bobby. Meanwhile, the shop girls become obsessed with the band Texaco and the very public split between romantically entangled band members, Ian Machine and Sandra Beach. In the title song, "Shop Girl," one of the girls describes the mundane tasks of working in a shop with such verve that the ordinary is surreally transformed. "Dreams Don't Come True," is the rollicking opening number that sets the tone for what's to come, with a sound that makes fans of George Martin and Lennon and McCartney, sit up and smile. There's something in the arrangements of the chords that ring true and bring to mind songs from the late 60's. It's not a rehash of that, but rather a lovely re-interpretation of Liverpool and London via Charlottesville, Virginia and Los Angeles, California.
