Technology has largely rendered those methods obsolete, but there is still something compelling about trading sight for sound and touch. That shift is at the heart of AEAEA's - the new duo of Patrick Higgins & Nicolás Jaar - debut album, Mist, an album that asks: how do you find your bearings when the world around you goes into a blur?The duo's genesis goes back to the 2019 Le Guess Who? festival, for which Higgins served as artist curator. Named after the hazy mythical terrain of oak and beech woodlands, the island and it's encircling stories became a source of inspiration for both musicians, who have long favoured mixtures of ancient harmony and electronic experimentation.The album emerges from the pair's exploration of a new shared language, in which Higgins's guitar and percussion are routed live through Jaar's real-time effects chains, rendering sampling, dubbing and processing as musical instruments in their own right. Recorded over three years between Berlin and Higgins's studio in upstate New York, Mist folds the hazy, intuitive logic of processing chains and improvisation into the core of the composition. The record develops a series of melodic themes that emerge from Higgins's guitar and refract into a sea of electronics, percussion, and eventually a fuller ensemble of keyboards, organs, drums, and the cello improvisations of composer Judith Hamann. Mist's soundscapes are mournful, and slow, with notes often encircled in a blue-grey vapor. At times we perceive rays of distant light piercing through the blur but mostly, we hear echoes of distant shores whose rhythms might finally allow us to see without vision. On Expensive Shit, Fela chronicles a failed attempt to imprison him for possession of weed in 1974. At this time, Nigeria was under a military dictatorship that had declared a war on indecency. Fela’s insubordination infuriated the government, and they repeatedly raided his compound, Kalakuta. During one of the raids, an officer produced a joint from his own pocket and attempted to plant it on Fela, which Fela then swallowed. He was immediately taken to prison, where the police waited three days for him to “produce” an incriminating sample. When the time came, police took Fela’s sample for analysis and found nothing. Each night, Fela and his cellmates had swapped their slop buckets around, allowing Fela to relieve himself without the authorities realizing it. By the time of the public shit, there was no marijuana left in his system. The police had no choice but to let him go. This 50th Anniversary edition is pressed on gold nugget vinyl, packaged in a trifold jacket that features elements of the original vinyl packaging alongside newly licensed images, a dossier envelope with poster, print, and newspaper clipping, wrapped with a metallic gold foil band. 'Act 2' has no beginning and no end. It's a list of mantras and counter-mantras tied to the same world. Any repeated thought is a direct reflection of my ruminating mind. "Act 2" doesn't hold any evidence of a final act; it's simply a second thought. Three of the five songs address the same subject while focusing on a distinct facet. Furthering the idea that recuperation is never final, it'll merely continue in different ways. As the lyrical motif becomes more brave, so does the music itself. An engaging song doesn't have to be easily digestible and predictable. Therefore, I wanted the musical elements to have freedom. "The Rot" covers sharp corners with punchy, 80s sonics, whereas contrast lies within the song "Easy." Sometimes bold doesn't mean more, but rather less. Continuing the overall sense of nostalgia from "Fantasy," I wanted it darker, more uncanny, and surreal. Any ultra-sterile, computer-recorded stems would be processed through a multitrack tape machine, simultaneously adjusting speed and treating them like an instrument to collect analog artifacts and tape punches, blending the past and present. We took inspiration from the 70s and 80s films: The NeverEnding Story, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Labyrinth, Excalibur, and many more to capture the project's personhood. When Nachtmystium released "The World We Left Behind" in 2014, the album received quite a lot of flak. Most of that had to do with the descent of the band's mastermind, Blake Judd, into a hard addiction to heroin that had started to grow years earlier out of opioid prescription and general drug abuse. And while the black metal scene has been quite forgiving of murder, arson, political extremism, and other crimes (after time was served and the culprits rehabilitated), being ill and an addict seems unforgivable to some. This led to "The World We Left Behind" being harshly judged for anything but it's musical value and the album ending up in some kind of critical black hole. Blake has called this album "a final death-cry from the 'Black Meddle' era and line-up", which is quite an accurate description. New additions to the musical legacy of that glorious era are glimpses into the chaos behind the scenes, the inner darkness that held the band in it's grip, and a brutal lyrical honesty. These elements fit the black metal genre only too well. Personal experience of any kind has always inspired artists. It is therefore hardly surprising that the traumatic medical crisis which DOMKRAFT guitarist Martin Widholm faced in 2025 has found an echo on the Swedes' fifth album "Night Songs". The album title partly stems from the Swedes' experiences during the past year but also crosses into the broad idea of darkness versus light. This can mean personal hardships, the present state of the world, or the concept of actual night itself. The night may turn into a time of regret, solitude and insomnia, but also into the opposite, as a calm phase of relief, relaxation, and even debauchery. All of this happens at night. And just maybe, these "Night Songs" could primarily deal with resilience. DOMKRAFT sprung into being when singer and bass player Martin Wegeland, guitarist Martin Widholm, and drummer Anders Dahlgren realised that they had firmly bonded over a mutual love of bands such as SPACEMEN 3, MONSTER MAGNET, SLEEP, and HAWKWIND. DOMKRAFT's monolithic 2016 debut album, "The End of Electricity", drew equally from the heaviness, psychedelia, and hypnotic minimalism of their influences. "Night Songs" was recorded at the renowned Studio Gröndahl in Stockholm by David Castillo (OPETH, CANDLEMASS, KATATONIA et al.). Karl Daniel Lidén (GREENLEAF, LOWRIDER, BREACH) was asked to maintain DOMKRAFT's sonic identity by again mixing and mastering the album.
