Carolina Pazzini Uccelli (Florence, 1801 - 1858) was a composer, symphonist, and a skilful self-promoter, defined as ""symphoniste"" by French critic Henri Blanchard in 1842. She made her debut with a Symphony published by Ricordi in 1826, but her first major success came with the opera Saul (1830), performed at Florence's Teatro della Pergola thanks to the encouragement of Gioachino Rossini. Widowed in 1832, she continued to have her works performed in Italy and Paris, where she organised concerts with her daughter Emma, a singer, earning critical acclaim and mingling with personalities such as Hugo, Berlioz and Viardot. Her output includes operas, cantatas, symphonies and numerous salon romances. Among her most significant collections are the Quattro Ariette e due Cavatine on texts by Metastasio (1827), dedicated to the British ambassador's wife in Florence, and the cycle Mes reves d'Italie (c. 1843), dedicated to the Duchess of Nemours, which includes pieces performed by celebrated artists such as Rubini, Tamburini and Giulia Grisi. Her works reveal a refined choice of texts, ranging from Metastasian melodrama to Romantic ballads and French chansonnettes. Published in Salzburg in 1715, Artificiosus Concentus pro Camera is the only surviving collection for solo violin by Johann Joseph Vilsmayr, who served as a court violinist in Salzburg from 1689 until his death in 1722. We cannot be certain that he studied with Heinrich Biber, the greatest violinist of his age who became a leading musician at the Salzburg court, but the relationship between the two figures can be inferred from the style and the sophistication of Vilsmayr's writing for his instrument. Four of the partitas notably use scordatura, where the violin is retuned away from the conventional G-D-A-E intonation in order to explore new and striking expressive colours on the instrument. In works such as the cycle of Mystery Sonatas, Biber shows himself the master of this technique, but (as his putative student) Vilsmayr demonstrates a deep understanding of scordatura. For example, in the B flat major Partita, the highest string is lowered to D, creating a natural resonance that emphasizes a fundamental tone for that key. In the D major Partita, the scordatura (A-E-A-D) enriches the harmonic resonance by reinforcing the overtones of the key centre.Despite it's high musical and technical value, Vilsmayr's collection remains little known, especially when compared to contemporary masterpieces for solo violin such as the Mystery Sonatas, the Sonatas and Partitas of Bach or the Fantasias by Telemann. In his booklet essay for this new recording, the violinist Davide Facchini explains how he was initially drawn to the world of Biber, before discovering these fascinating works of Vilsmayr. Francesco Balilla Pratella is known as a musician and theorist of Futurism, but his activity was much broader: he was a writer, librettist, ethnomusicologist, and director of the ""Verdi"" Institute in Ravenna. Ferdinand Ries (1784-1838) was born in Bonn and moved to Vienna in 1801, where his life became closely related to that of Ludwig van Beethoven (also a native of Bonn). The album opens with a new original song from Johnny, 'The Music of the Spheres', and includes the songwriting debut from Lillie 'Brockwell Park', and closes with a lullaby penned by their father, as well as reinterpretations of traditional songs and covers, such as Paul Simon's 'The Boy In The Bubble', Hank Williams' 'Rambling Man', plus 'Hares on the Mountain' and 'Iduema'.
The album was produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Marika Hackman, London Grammar), and first single, the live favourite 'The Ghost Of O'Donahue' features acclaimed South African vocal harmony group The Joy.

This attractive program brings together a fine selection of solo and concertante works for organ, as played by the young and highly talented Czech organist Adam Suk.Probably the best-known and most frequently performed organ concerto with orchestra ever was written by French composer Francis Poulenc. Although several separate parts can be recognized in it's course, it is written as an uninterrupted single-movement flow of music. The mood of the concerto is deep, dark and introspective, yet it bears all the typical hallmarks of Poulenc's music: distinctive melodic invention, a sense of contrast, and subtle irony.Another organ concerto presented here is by Franz Xaver Brixi, a Bohemian who worked at the Benedictine Church of St. George at Prague Castle, where he wrote several organ concertos specifically for this venue - a form that was not at all common at the time. The Organ Concerto in D major retains the classical three-movement structure (fast-slow-fast). For 3+ years Razor-N-Tape has held their quarterly A Joyful Noise event in the Sound Room at Public Records.
