"'I have this Pavlovian response where I just expel songs," Chuck Roth explains. For the New York-based guitarist, the LP format is less a definitive product than a snapshot of his daily life and growing artistic practice. With last year's watergh0st songs, Roth was dedicated to 'mapping every voice, seeing where they come together and fall apart.' He's more interested in materiality on his new album, the expressive and intimate Texture Songs. Across it's seven tracks, he excavates the particularities of his Stratocaster, be it the guitar's characteristic pickups or capacity for volume swelling.Traces of some Texture Songs have existed for at least five years, evolving with every live performance, but their presentation on this album represents Roth in the now. At times that means technique. 'Gun' is built on a curiosity for hitting harmonics on the bottom string, letting them ring out, while 'Siren' is similarly defined by sustained buzzing sounds while string crossing. 'I get really into the shape of each note,' he says. You can sense that curiosity in the album's raw presentation, where every song invites a full feeling of every plucked note, every slide across the fretboard. On the shapeshifting 'Highway,' it sounds like you're there in the room with him, hearing his breath, sensing the shape of every chord, tracing each split-second change in attacking the guitar.Roth has felt most comfortable talking about his work with painters and visual artists, favoring descriptions via color and brightness over any technical language. It relates to his belief that music can be totally self-sufficient in it's meaning-making. While Roth sings on these tracks, he explains that 'it's actually the music that describes the emotions I've had.' Lyrics, then, are meant to 'decorate the border of a song's emotion without dictating it.' He likens the voice to a drummer's specific kick pattern: it's a conduit for counterpoint, conjuring greater specificity in the feelings evoked.Take 'Hometown Hero,' which is rooted in observations made on daily walks to work. In seeing his city change, he constructed the song as a 'violent document,' something heard in it's damaged guitar chords and turbulent vocal melodies. 'Siren' is the inevitable aftermath: the apathy and detachment that arrives as a means of survival. While relatively quiet, it's harmonics' smooth tones mask an underlying anxiety. Roth describes the beautifully complex 'Love Song' as a track made of code words, capturing his relationship with his partner in a language only they know. 'I'm trying to resist understanding my work,' he tells me. If you have no expectations, you will get what you expect; if you have expectations, "Flying Man" will exceed them, because it also breaks through it's own existing framework. "Flying Man" stems from Leah Dou's recent life experiences. Because of her work, she has to constantly fly back and forth, leaving her mind and body suspended in mid-air, unable to find peace. But instead of dwelling on likes and dislikes, she chooses to experience the present moment. Thus, the airplane becomes a piano, and she uses the limited keys to create and refine demos during takeoffs and landings: using time in the cabin to create and refine demos, then reflecting on the entire experience in her compositions. Therefore, "Flying Man" features a large amount of blue and white tones, occasionally turning gray; airplanes, clouds, the sun, vultures, and songs fill the air with imagery-some continuously moving, some floating, some waiting to prey-all eventually landing.

Inspired by the Chinese wuxia novels by the legendary Jin Yong, Ashes of Time is one of Wong Kar-wai's early work on Chinese martial arts featuring an all-star line-up including Leslie Cheung, Leung Ka-fai, Lin Ching-hsia, Tong Leung, Maggie Cheung and more. This 2008 remake titled Ashes of Time Redux is created with new effects and a new score and was debuted at the Cannes Film Festival the same year. The new soundtrack features original music by Frankie Chan and Roel A. Garcia with additional score and rearrangement by instrumentalist Wu Tong and additional cello solos by renowned musician Yo-Yo Ma. A much-underrated masterpiece perfectly blending music from the east and the west.

Five years after their last album, Les Agamemnonz return with ""Die Sommerreise"" (""The Summer Journey"" in German), an adventurous fourth album glowing with [here we had issue translating the word ""solaire"" which means solar and also bright glowing like an ""aura""]. During a German tour, the band stopped in Berlin. For five days, the musicians took over a vast red-brick building, typical of the city's eastern part, to record about ten tracks under the direction of Axel Praefcke. The Berlin-based sound engineer, who has created a kind of Sun Studio Funkhaus-style here, is known for his organic and direct approach. Everything is recorded and mixed live, in the urgency and energy of the moment: the amps are cranked up, the days stretch on, and the band's chitons dry in the sun on the truck parked in front of the studio. Further exploring the rhythmic and structural aspects of their songs, ""Die Sommerreise"" revisits and reinterprets various styles often associated with the 1960s, such as the polka, the jerk, the waltz (Sfumato), the bolero, and so on. Here we find what has always been the hallmark of Les Agamemnonz: effective rhythms and audacious arrangements. It's worth noting that, while the group had extensively explored orchestral arrangements on their previous ""Amateurs"" LP by adding brass and string sections during overdub sessions, this time they experimented with a live recording of the group/orchestra encounter, everyone in the same room, the old-fashioned way. A small section was brought together, resulting, in the midst of this short, focused, and laborious week, in a kind of joyful brass band happening (Der Mondmann) but also the most ""dramatic"" facet of the album (Le Vieux Manteau). The album also features several distinguished guests. Graham Mushnik (Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek) joined the band in the studio, playing a rare ondioline (an early form of synthesizer popularized by Jean-Jacques Perrey) to several tracks (Davet, Gel gel gel), and Antoine Berland, an iconoclastic pianist, provides the album's introduction using a clavicorde, an equally unique instrument. A leading figure on the international surf scene, the band distinguishes itself as much by it's ability to evoke the genre's classics - The Ventures, The Astronauts, and The Challengers - as by the originality of it's songwriting. For about seventeen years, Les Agamemnonz have performed hundreds of concerts throughout Europe and the United States. Always dressed in their Greek chitons and barefoot like the lyre player, come rain or shine, they captivate audiences of all ages and - instrumental music being what it is - without any language barrier. They sweep audiences of all ages away in sun-drenched instrumental celebrations. This two-song 7 inch release (on 45 rpm) is a teaser for the upcoming double LP album on Planet Ilunga dedicated to the Congolese band African Fiesta which was active during 1963-1965. African Fiesta was run by Roger Izeidi, Docteur Nico and Tabu Ley Rochereau.
