Five years after their last album, Les Agamemnonz return with ""Die Sommerreise"" (""The Summer Journey"" in German), an adventurous fourth album glowing with [here we had issue translating the word ""solaire"" which means solar and also bright glowing like an ""aura""]. During a German tour, the band stopped in Berlin. For five days, the musicians took over a vast red-brick building, typical of the city's eastern part, to record about ten tracks under the direction of Axel Praefcke. The Berlin-based sound engineer, who has created a kind of Sun Studio Funkhaus-style here, is known for his organic and direct approach. Everything is recorded and mixed live, in the urgency and energy of the moment: the amps are cranked up, the days stretch on, and the band's chitons dry in the sun on the truck parked in front of the studio. Further exploring the rhythmic and structural aspects of their songs, ""Die Sommerreise"" revisits and reinterprets various styles often associated with the 1960s, such as the polka, the jerk, the waltz (Sfumato), the bolero, and so on. Here we find what has always been the hallmark of Les Agamemnonz: effective rhythms and audacious arrangements. It's worth noting that, while the group had extensively explored orchestral arrangements on their previous ""Amateurs"" LP by adding brass and string sections during overdub sessions, this time they experimented with a live recording of the group/orchestra encounter, everyone in the same room, the old-fashioned way. A small section was brought together, resulting, in the midst of this short, focused, and laborious week, in a kind of joyful brass band happening (Der Mondmann) but also the most ""dramatic"" facet of the album (Le Vieux Manteau). The album also features several distinguished guests. Graham Mushnik (Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek) joined the band in the studio, playing a rare ondioline (an early form of synthesizer popularized by Jean-Jacques Perrey) to several tracks (Davet, Gel gel gel), and Antoine Berland, an iconoclastic pianist, provides the album's introduction using a clavicorde, an equally unique instrument. A leading figure on the international surf scene, the band distinguishes itself as much by it's ability to evoke the genre's classics - The Ventures, The Astronauts, and The Challengers - as by the originality of it's songwriting. For about seventeen years, Les Agamemnonz have performed hundreds of concerts throughout Europe and the United States. Always dressed in their Greek chitons and barefoot like the lyre player, come rain or shine, they captivate audiences of all ages and - instrumental music being what it is - without any language barrier. They sweep audiences of all ages away in sun-drenched instrumental celebrations. This fleeting immersion in nature lent the album a profound introspection and mystery, and the it's twelve tracks unfold in dream sequence, each drifting seamlessly into the next while still managing to steer the listener in myriad directions, from eerie butoh atmospheres, to ebullient raga, to desolate, cavernous chanson. "Crowned as the definitive masterpiece that launched Wong Kar-wai's international success, Chungking Express is a romantic drama revolving around the themes of love and loss, physical and emotional distances in the metropolitan city life. The soundtrack - a blend of Cantonpop, western pop and works by Frankie Chan & Roel A. Garcia, is a musical portrayal of Hong Kong where the film was based - a true multicultural melting pot. From dream pop to jazz, the music in Chungking Express not only enhanced the two seemingly unrelated stories but is also said to have broken dream pop into mainstream success in Hong Kong - the opening number by Faye Wong, a cantonese rendition of "Dreams" by The Cranberries is a perfect example here. This soundtrack is pressed on a Sensuous Forest Vinyl resembling the curtain from the apartment of Cop 663 (played by Tony Leung), yet another irresistible collection for fans of this movie. Favorites by Nat King Cole and the characters' live-recorded scripts sonically constructed a picture of love and lust in this film, which is considered to be one of Wong Kar-wai's best work to-date. One must not miss the haunting "Yumeji's Theme" by Japanese composer Shigeru Umebayashi and the "Angkor Wat Themes" by Michael Galasso that has brought this film to it's perfection.

Michael Stearns is a multi-genre music composer and soundtrack designer/producer. His credits include music for Ron Fricke's non-verbal 70MM films 'Chronos', 'Baraka' and 'Samsara (with Lisa Gerrard And Marcello de Francisci)', music for NASA, Laserium, Disney films, HBO, ABC, PBS, BBC, Discovery Channel and James Cameron's 'The Abyss', 'Titanic' and 'Avatar'. Michael works in his studio 'The Guest House', in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 1975, Michael moved from Tucson to Los Angeles to study with Emilie Conrad at the Continuum Studio. Emilie had 'live' music for her 'movement meditation' classes, and Michael began performing with Fred Stofflet, Gary David, and Don Preston. Ancient Leaves (25:43) was Michael's first album, recorded in 1976/77 with a Mini Moog synthesizer and a Finish lap harp (Kantele) onto 4 track tape. To the other instruments, Michael added Emilie chanting, an ascending choir with Susan Harper and Linda Olsen vocalists, Gregorian Chants and a night ambience recorded in the desert outside of Tucson, Arizona, his hometown. It was initially released on LP and cassette. The 'B' side, Elysian E (23:13) was performed with an Arp String Ensemble played through an MXR digital delay, one of the first, then slowed to half speed. To this he added Moog and EML synthesizers, The Beam and his voice.
