The title "Dance & Resist" captures the band's guiding contradiction: that you can acclaim and celebrate something while still seeking to change, challenge, disrupt, or overturn it - the same spirit found decades later in people doing the Electric Slide at BLM protests.TracksSouth Pacific - The desire for the unobtainable, and the question of just where "anywhere since sunset" might be.Shout & Testify - A booty-shaking call to dancefloor action.Different From You? - Inspired by Winston Rodney's "Social Living" and the Rastafarian concept of positive livity: peace, love, and respect toward others, with no room for tribalism.Hold Up Half The Sky - A phrase drawn from the women's movement, particularly the Grunwick Picket of South Asian textile workers, and later used more broadly in the fight for women's rights. BFD's attempt to align themselves with that struggle - with a nod to Rosie the Riveter.Blue 4 U - On mass media's ability to manufacture personal disquiet and a desire to escape - "affectionate propaganda" becoming suffocating, answered with open minds and open hearts. Written well before algorithms and AI.Hesitate - The band's attempt at a Chic-style arrangement, about putting things off until "mañana."Rain Song - A celebration of Edinburgh's micro-climate, four seasons in a day, and one of the album's few strictly narrative lyrics, inspired by August Darnell and film noir.Wild Jazz Summers - Title lifted from a Tennessee Williams biography. An attempt at West Side Story meets beat poetry, with a Hammond B organ outro.BFD - In their later days, the band closed live sets with this percussion-heavy number, breaking the fourth wall in a manner indebted to the Sun Ra Arkestra.Get Off Your Ass And Jam - A loose, live take on the Funkadelic tune, capturing the band's earliest iteration - recorded at their first ever hometown gig. The Black Heart Procession consists of two main songwriters, Tobias Nathaniel and Pall A. Jenkins, who both were in three mile pilot. At times they play as a simply two piece, and at others they ask friends to join them. Mario Rubalcaba (clikitat ikitowi), Jason Crane (rocket from the crypt), and Kazu Makino (blonde redhead) chipped in on the making of three. originally released in 2000, three is The Black Heart Procession's third full-length release. #the sounds of the instruments come together t o support the rhythm of pall's rich vocals. #each song seems to move forward and back perpetually playing with a contrast between light tones and dark, brooding themes. The Black Heart Procession break hearts with the melded sounds o f piano, saw, pump organs, guitar, trumpet and vocals as well as the odd percussive instrument. #the sounds may cause some of you pain or joy, or both, as their music rings out with sorrow and heartache, yet there is an underlying element of emancipation.

Coke Bottle Clear VinylFor more than 20 years, every Caspian album has been driven by a desire to stretch boundaries - a relentless ambition that's resulted in one of post-rock's most revered catalogs and established the Massachusetts quintet as an enduring, global force in the genre's modern era. On Caspian, the band's first album in six years and debut for Wax Bodega, the more unexpected way forward was to stop searching for what they hadn't yet done and instead trust what had defined them from the beginning. The six-song, 39-minute effort draws freely from the musical vocabulary the band have spent their career writing: evocative melodic themes, dense textures, swelling crescendos and crushing heaviness that rolls in like a slow-moving storm on the horizon. But they still find new possibilities within those familiar contours, allowing patient development and repetition to carry as much weight as surprise. The nine-minute "Remain" turns a recurring melody into a sweeping study in tension and release, while "No One Left to Tell" layers subtle shifts around a hypnotic tremolo figure and "A Great Fire" sends serpentine guitars crashing into buzzsaw riffs. Even the graceful 3/4-time closer "Waltz for the End," completed in a half-hour burst of inspiration, reflects the quiet confidence of five musicians comfortable enough in their skin to resist tearing everything down for the sake of reinvention, even as the circumstances surrounding them change dramatically.

Hanne Lippard and Renato Grieco's Today's Special is a suite of language works synthesising melody and diction that integrates the literary and the audible in a repertoire of songs that bask in the melody of voice and the punctuations of structured composition. Working with methods of reduction rather than opulence in both tonal composition and rhetoric, each piece pegs the poetic to the musical with compositional schematics and methods. It is important to state that there is little to none improvisation here, instead, the duo set up matrices, rules and structural links that facilitated meaningful locus of exchange between their two practices. In some tracks the structural connections are obvious - the matched tumbling delivery and stepped pitches of voice and piano in Aficionado sounding like two tipsy friends descending a staircase. In others, like the triptych of tracks Three Rungs Ladder, structured with rules derived from nursery rhymes, or cumulative song (akin to the 12 Days of Christmas). For the Colour 1 and Colour 2 pieces, the duo worked from palettes of colours connected to clusters of harmonies, which underlined the power of the word and it's articulation. The absurd Labradorable personifies a people pleaser, A Story About Being Blue is an imagined playful monologue from the Deep Blue supercomputer - requesting in sing-song stop motion to be called Debbie, and Larry - as Grieco echoes in factual reportage. Hurtbeat unpacks and recomposes a tweeted non-apology by a Russian art collector about owning a piece of racist art, Grieco shadowing Lippard's generating a third 'drop-shadow' performer from the resonances between the duo, typographic re-articulation of the source material. The Receiver includes lines from Robert Ashley's Improvement (Don Leaves Linda), Ashley existing as a spiritual parent of sorts to the practices contained on Today's Special, and here interpolated as if he is being quoted and written through within the audible world of the piece in a palimpsest of borrowed sentences. Closing track The Black Rose contains it's own self-aware comedy, a lightly distorted conversation sourced from a Reddit thread about whether black roses exist, recorded as if it were an internet radio or a low budget podcast, the casual exchange stilted in the delivery of platitudes as scripted speech. Today's Special was developed in person over the course of a series of small residencies - at Deutsche Akademie Rom Villa Massimo, Rome; Fondazione Morra, Napoli; Callie's, Berlin. In these limited periods that rarely stretched beyond a week, Lippard and Grieco developed strategies for the works, keeping tightly locked to musical concepts. This, for Grieco, is about maintaining a solid, meaningful connection within the compositions, and committing to everything having a purpose for existing within the work. Each element pulls it's weight; has something to say, literally and metaphorically speaking. In the same way that Lippard's work leaves nowhere for her to hide, he wants the music to exist with it's own naked purpose: "It's is about exposing nudity via reduced materials," says Grieco. "This is a form of courage we want to embrace. Once we take off everything, it needs to be extremely precise to maintain a connection with the audience. We have a lot of tools to hide behind now, to protect ourselves and our identities as artists, performers, and in life more generally. It's something I don't want to do. I want extreme reduction: no hiding."

Despite Steve Albini relentlessly advocating for Touch and Go Records to release Tweez in 1989, we declined. A few weeks later, Steve invited Slint to an impromptu recording session to make use of some studio time booked by another band who did not show up. At the end of the session, Steve did a quick mix for the band to take home. The next day, Steve dropped off a tape of those mixes to me at the Touch and Go office. These new Slint recordings blew my mind and I could not stop listening to them. Shortly thereafter, we agreed to release Slint's next album on Touch and Go - the soon to be recorded Spiderland. - Corey Rusk, Touch and Go Records

"Subtle and over the top at the same time" is an apt description of Iroiro's astonishing debut album, Iroiro [GU002/KLP127]. It only took a few gigs for Iroiro to establish themselves as Seattle's most exciting rock group. This may surprise fans of IQU, the '90s K recording artist whose Michiko Swiggs and Kento Oiwa form Iroiro's creative core. IQU combined samples and live instrumentation to put playful spins on trip-hop, drum & bass, and synth-pop, Iroiro produce extended, vocal-free jams that blossom into powerful psychedelic rock. You can hear the band's rapid, splendid evolution on their self-titled debut album, recorded in the '70s room at Avast! With Stuart Hallerman. In the disbanding of synth sorceress Swiggs and drummer Justin Schwartz's electronic unit Zazaz, they asked Oiwa to join them in a new project. They assembled for Friday night sessions at which the trio combined Zazaz's "man-machine methods" and spontaneous noise excursions. James Drage joined the sessions and his effected bass sounds were, says Swiggs, "amazing and otherworldly. He was the perfect piece that we were missing in the band."The resulting album will convince you that rock still has ingenuity to burn.Iroiro's six songs gain intensity as they progress. The loping, chiming rock of "Once" morphs into an elegantly distorted whorl. "Formosa" boasts arena-rock swagger tempered by artfully noisy, psychedelic sensibilities and a wistful tunefulness. An easygoing chugger with a winsome melody and Theremin melisma, "Nanashi" is suffused with a gentle euphoria that eventually gets subsumed by tumult. "I Didn't I Will" has the feeling of an inexorable ascent toward enlightenment. "Cool Man Sicks" has a similar processional motion, but is more understated and metronomic. Inspired by a New Mexico mountain Kento visited, "Sandia" starts like a soulful, meditation before exploding into towers of fizzing guitars, then returning to calm.

On Halloween night, October 31, 2000, Widespread Panic took the Austin City Limits stage for one of the most cherished performances in the band's history. It's the classic lineup - John Bell, Dave Schools, John "JoJo" Hermann, Todd Nance, and Domingo "Sunny" Ortiz - anchored by founding guitarist Michael Houser, whose playing that night ranks among the great documents of his career. Houser passed away less than two years later, and this set has only grown more essential with time: a rare, fully-captured glimpse of the guitarist and songwriter whose nickname gave the band it's name. The show opens with Vic Chesnutt's "Let's Get Down to Business" before tearing into "Ain't Life Grand, " "Space Wrangler, " and "Blue Indian." The centerpiece is the sprawling "Driving Song Surprise Valley Driving Song, " a fourteen-plus-minute jam critics have called the show's tour de force. Eleven tracks in all, capturing Panic at the peak of it's improvisational powers in front of a Halloween crowd that matched the band's energy note for note. This reissue brings the legendary set back with all-new artwork from longtime Panic poster artist JT Lucchesi, pressed on Rainbow Color Splatter vinyl, and available for the first time ever on CD - putting this milestone performance in physical formats for both longtime collectors and fans discovering it for the first time.Whether you were there in 2000 or you're catching up decades later, this is Widespread Panic doing what they do best: turning a single night into something that keeps unfolding every time you drop the needle.

Serengeti, one of hip-hop's most singular and imaginative storytellers, returns to the expansive world of Kenny Dennis with KennyV. For more than a decade, Serengeti has used his mustachioed, Chicago-born alter ego to build one of rap's funniest, strangest, and most unexpectedly poignant character studies. Kenny is a blue-collar hero, family man, sports obsessive, aspiring entertainer, and endlessly unreliable narrator whose everyday victories, anxieties, grudges, and digressions have grown into a richly detailed mythology all their own.Across twelve tracks, KennyV opens another chapter in that saga, balancing absurdist humor, intricate world-building, sharp wordplay, and genuine emotional weight. Serengeti's conversational performances make even Kenny's most surreal observations feel lived-in and deeply human, revealing new layers of the character while remaining accessible to listeners encountering him for the first time.Production comes from Backwoodz Studioz mainstays Messiah Musik, known for his work with Armand Hammer, billy woods, and Mach-Hommy, and Steel Tipped Dove, whose credits include Fatboi Sharif, Doseone, ShrapKnel, and milo. Together, they provide an evocative and unconventional backdrop perfectly suited to Serengeti's unmistakable voice and unpredictable storytelling.Previously available digitally, KennyV now receives a long-awaited physical edition from Backwoodz Studioz on vinyl, CD, and cassette. A distinctive addition to the Kenny Dennis canon and Serengeti's celebrated catalog, these editions are essential for longtime fans, adventurous hip-hop listeners, and collectors of truly original independent rap. Following the 2025 release of lead single "Glowin'," Mike James Kirkland returns with his long-awaited full-length album, The Business. Backed by Monophonics, Kirkland delivers a rich, horn-driven collection that seamlessly blends upbeat soul with heartfelt ballads, reaffirming his place as one of the genre's enduring voices. The album opens with the energetic "Ready Or Not," where Kirkland confidently declares, "Baby, I am ready," setting the tone for a triumphant comeback. Producer Kelly Finnigan channels the lush sophistication of Philly soul on "Where Did We Go Wrong," layering horns, flute, French horn, and sitar beneath Kirkland's reflection on love in turmoil. Finnigan also arranges the romantic "Leading Lady," while joining Kirkland on background vocals for the tender "Remembering Our Love."The midtempo title track "The Business" turns it's attention to social issues, pairing flowing strings with lyrics addressing systemic injustice and police oppression. In contrast, "Joyriding" captures the carefree spirit of summer with an uplifting groove that ranks among the album's highlights.Well-received single "Glowin'," closes the album. Inspired by The Rationals' 1969 version of the Dr. John composition, the song reflects Kirkland's enduring message of seeking spiritual balance and happiness over material success.Written and recorded between late 2021 and mid-2022 with contributions from Jimmy James (Parlor Greens) and Lou King (Ironsides), The Business pairs Kirkland's timeless vocals with the Monophonics' lush musicianship, marking a welcome return for the legendary soul singer.

Nothing else sounds like Drag Talk. On their debut album, Drink The Ocean, the L.A. band finds gauzy beauty in the fathomless chaos that surrounds us, their exquisite shoegaze guitars and Britpop melodicism skewed with Jutty Taylor's genre-fluid vocals.Harnessing '90s indie nostalgia to here-and-now emotional responses, Drag Talk's lush atmospherics, spacious beats, and hugely emotive hooks create something singular yet accessible and authentic. "I feel like we're hardcore punk dudes who love Oasis," offered guitarist Ross O'Carroll, whose pandemic home demos were the germ of the band in 2021.Drag Talk is a coming-together of like-minded friends with long, intertwined histories. O'Carroll and fellow guitarist Matt Ripp Bennett grew up together in Hawaii but had somehow never been in the same band. Taylor and drummer Hayden Scott (Awolnation, Paramore) were longtime bandmates in Grammy winning Swedish rock band Ghost. Third guitarist (yes, there are three) Neil Popkin played alongside Bennett in War Tapes, and even the band's producer, Tom Syrowski (The Killers, Mastodon, Pearl Jam), has been in their circle since the aughts.Drag Talk released their debut single, "Egyptian Flesh" in 2022 and the Dogs EP the following year. By the time they dropped follow-up EP Rosy Crown in 2024, they'd earned a cult following evidenced by sell-out shows on both coasts and a deal with MNRK Music Group. Due in September 2026, Drink The Ocean emerged from a period of personal tumult that almost broke the band, the album's very existence a bittersweet act of defiance.
