Clarence Carter, blind from birth, was a blues singer with lascivious wit, a talented guitarist, a songwriter with a twinkle in his eye, and a champion of down-to-earth soul grooves who taught himself to play the guitar. He sang in a gospel choir, completed a degree in music, and grounded the duo Clarence & Calvin but was not however very successful. After a car crash involving Calvin Scott, Carter started on a solo career and signed a contract with Rick Hall and the Fame label as a soloist. Among the earliest singles recorded at the Muscle Shoals studio were a few hits. After leaving Fame for Atlantic, he managed to enter the Top 20 of the R & B charts with ""Looking For A Fox"". His breakthrough came with ""Slip Away"", which sold a million copies and was awarded a Gold Record. The legendary Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals remained the home basis, as it were, for Carter during his career with Atlantic. ""This Is. "" begins with a contemplative, soft sound. ""Do What You Gotta Do"", written by Jim Webb, is a lovely, melancholic mid-tempo ballad, saturated with Barry Beckett's keyboard and smothered by lush, plaintive winds. But the man is primarily funky here. As three danceable, finger-snapping tracks prove; ""Wind It Up"", with further witty improvisations and a fervid organ solo, the highly syncopated, playful ""Thread The Needle"", and the smoky, irresistible ""Funky Fever"" - all written by Carter himself. Dan Penn's and Spooner Oldham's ""Slippin' Around"" has an unorthodox bossa nova-like beat that is reminiscent of Ray Charles's ""What'd I Say"", while Carter's unmistakable chuckle is to be heard for the first time on the riotous funk-rock number ""I'm Qualified"", which has the very same unique, infectious groove as was to be heard on Wilson Pickett's ""In The Midnight Hour"". This new compilation, curated by Penn himself, begins with the title track, "Smoke Filled Room," an unheard signature classic which could have been written in the heyday of Memphis and Muscle Shoals, before it runs the table from straight up southern gospel to blues and power ballads. With Darondo's passing, the world truly lost a singular and unique talent. His Let My People Go album has now reached "legendary" status with tracks featured on numerous A-list shows such as Breaking Bad and CSI, gaining legions of new fans in addition to the Soul afficionados who already knew of Darondo's music. A mystery to most, Darondo records are high on the wants-lists of many collectors. He is spoken about in hushed-tones by other Bay Area musicians. Back in the day he was seen cruising around town in a white Rolls Royce. He opened-up for James Brown and lived a colorful lifestyle hanging with folks like the notorious Fillmore Slim. Take a listen to these tracks, released for the first time together on an album, and you may agree that he could have been the next Al Green or Sly Stone. But about 25 years ago Darondo disappeared. Releasing three singles in the early 1970s he mixed lowrider soul with blues and RnB. He delivered in a variety of styles from the socially-charged "Let My People Go" to the sexually-driven funk of "Legs". All three singles were recorded in the Bay Area, and both sides of each of the singles are fantastic productions. The six tracks from the three original singles are featured here, along with three previously unreleased songs that were recently discovered on a demo reel. Recorded in the early 1970s, tracks from the demo reel were taken into a San Francisco studio in the summer of 2005 for enhancement. Darondo over-dubbed missing background vocals and guitar parts alongside up and coming San Francisco soul man Bing Ji Ling.

We could expound upon the history of this 1969 release on the Bethlehem label, but perhaps it's best to let the producer of the album do it. You might have heard of him-THE GODFATHER OF SOUL, JAMES BROWN! Here are his words from the back cover: "Between my concerts, one-nighters, and working with people in the poverty and 'Stay in School' programs, I find time to fly into Cincinnati to record - and for three years now everybody's been hippin me to dig the Dee Felice Trio. Last fall my production manager Bud Hobgood put me in a car, between sessions and between sessions we ended up at the Living Room Supper Club where the Trio was playing. After listening to the first set, I knew I had to record an album of standards with this trio backing me up, and I wasted no time in signing them to a contract - on the spot." So not only did the Dee Felice Trio back James Brown on his 1969 King release Gettin' Down to It, but also the Godfather turned around and produced the Trio's In Heat for Bethlehem. We will once again cede the floor to Mr. Brown: "The music in this album is a 'mixed bag,' whether your 'Stroke' is Soul, Rock, Blues, Folk or Bossa Nova -it's here to hear AND ALL WITH AN UNDERLYING Jazz Beat." We've remastered In Heat for this reissue-like James says, "Just put the record on the box, turn up volume and Dig, Baby Dig."
