Hailing from the City of Brotherly Love, Terri Wells first came to prominence as a session singer for Philadelphia International Records in the mid-1970s following the breakup of her group City Limits. Wells soon began recording and touring as a featured vocalist with artists such as Lou Rawls, M.F.S.B., Leon Huff, Jean Carne and Dexter Wansel. In 1979, she joined the band of Roy Ayers and eventually sang lead on "Turn Me Loose" and co-wrote the track "Let's Stay Together" from his 1982 album "Feeling Good." Recruited by staff producer Nick Martinelli, Terri signed as a solo act with the Philly World Records in 1983 and released her one and only full length offering "Just Like Dreamin'." The highly percussive 'Drongo's Flute' rises step by step towards interlocking, complex rhythmic patterns built from pygmy flutes and birdsongs before ascending into the cosmos. Levitation Orchestra's Marysia Osu alongside LluÃs Domènech Plana respectively bring harp and flutes whilst pulsing electronics are provided on 'Anima' by longtime collaborator Daniel Brandt.Ecstatic improvisations were overlaid with an array of instruments at his disposal, many from around the world, from Africa to South East Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, gathered from his own travels or brought back by family and friends. From the late 1960s into the mid-1980s a New Orleans-based record label, the Smoky Mary Phonograph Company, released fourteen LPs by some of the city's most revered and respected elder jazz musicians. The labels's owner, trombonist Frank Demond, produced Smoky Mary's sessions and often played on them, including many of the songs anthologized here on Traditional Jazz From New Orleans. A native of Los Angeles, Demond fell love with the Crescent City trad sound after hearing the Preservation Hall Band perform in California. That transformative moment inspired Demond to move to New Orleans, sit in with the band, and eventually join it. Smoky Mary refers to a nineteenth-century train which many musicians rode between gigs in downtown New Orleans, bythe Mississippi River, and. The highly percussive 'Drongo's Flute' rises step by step towards interlocking, complex rhythmic patterns built from pygmy flutes and birdsongs before ascending into the cosmos. Levitation Orchestra's Marysia Osu alongside LluÃs Domènech Plana respectively bring harp and flutes whilst pulsing electronics are provided on 'Anima' by longtime collaborator Daniel Brandt.Ecstatic improvisations were overlaid with an array of instruments at his disposal, many from around the world, from Africa to South East Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, gathered from his own travels or brought back by family and friends. Detroit Violinist and composer Mike Khoury presents his two drummer/two violin ensemble Spite of Darkness. Their forthcoming debut on Entropy Stereo Recordings features loft era veteran violinist, Jason Hwang, drummer and Ed Blackwell disciple, Andrew Drury, and longtime collaborator, drummer Ben Hall, known for his work with Bill Dixon and Ken Vandermark.Compositionally, the project grew from an experiment where Khoury immediately recognized the compositional possibilities that would allow him to write for himself and Hall, and fold it open into a mirrored Rorschach of their own interests in Stockhausen, Folkways, string ensemble over drum choir, Leroy Jenkins and Rashid Ali's groundbreaking record, "Swift are the Winds of Life" or Ornette Coleman's double quartet experiments if Bela Bartok wrote for them. Khoury has focused this work on redefining the balance of composition and improvisation and the recovery of the violin as a valid folk instrument as opposed to jazz or classical and today performs with his Detroit version of the band.
