Bideau suggests this unmarked territory could be as much a fantasyland as it is a transportive journey into the inner self."It's probably the feeling I love the most in life," enthuses Pascal. He's talking about dépaysement, a French word that literally translates as "uncountryfication" but has no English equivalent. The music exudes an infectiously uplifting quality, as a recurring danceable theme begins to freely permeate through the album alongside a future- searching ethos reminiscent of Sun Ra. Bideau is not the only musician on Terra Incognita. There's the Indian-born tabla virtuoso Sarathy Korwar who adds an almost drum and bass-like kineticism to 'Rain Dance', Dudú Kouate, the celebrated Senegalese musician adds an array of percussions, ngoni, flutes throughout with a spirited multi-octave vocal to give a climatic end to the album on 'Dawning Dusk'. The highly percussive 'Drongo's Flute' rises step by step towards interlocking, complex rhythmic patterns built from pygmy flutes and birdsongs before ascending into the cosmos. Levitation Orchestra's Marysia Osu alongside LluÃs Domènech Plana respectively bring harp and flutes whilst pulsing electronics are provided on 'Anima' by longtime collaborator Daniel Brandt.Ecstatic improvisations were overlaid with an array of instruments at his disposal, many from around the world, from Africa to South East Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, gathered from his own travels or brought back by family and friends. Pascal plays flutes, clarinet, guitars, bass, mbira, balafon, dutars, marimbas, zither, adungu and many other percussions. Most prominent is the alto-saxophone which features throughout: "It's the link that connects everything together, half-narrator, half-explorer, ambling along and reacting in real time".Terra Incognita then is a rarified opportunity to get lost in and to find our presence of mind, to get off-grid, or even off the map altogether. French tenor saxophonist and jazz composer Barney Wilen is best known for his contributions to soundtracks and has worked amongst jazz giants as Miles Davis, Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk. In 1989, he recorded French Story at Studio 44 in The Netherlands together with the Mal Waldron trio, consisting of the jazz pianist Mal Waldron, Stafford James on bass and Eddie Moore on drums. They recorded eight jazz compositions from classic French movies, "Julien Dans L'Ascenseur/Florence Sur Les Champs-Elysées" and "Générique" amongst others. Miles Davis' original composition 'Julien Dans L'Ascenseur/Florence Sur Les Champs-Eylsées' comes from his famous album Ascenseur Pour L'échafaud and "Les Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves)" origins from the French film Les Portes de la Nuit which is one of Yves Montand's classic chansons and 'Un Homme Et Une Fille' is a classic French movie theme.Wilen's album was released in 1990 on the Dutch jazz label Timeless Records. In 1992, the album first appeared on vinyl, but only consisted of six tracks. The full album is being reissued in it's entirety and includes the tracks "No Problem" and "Quiet Temple". German guitarist Olaf Rupp combines elements of traditional flamenco (rasgueados, arpeggios, picados) with the fractured cadences of Derek Bailey, fusing them together with a blast-furnace tone recalling John Lee Hooker's most blown-out extremes. And yet, despite decades of concerts and releases on FMP and Emanem, often with marquee-grabbing collaborators like John Zorn, Peter Brötzmann, Butch Morris, Paul Lovens and Lol Coxhill, Rupp's music is largely unknown outside of European free improvisational circles, and (until now) has never been presented on vinyl. Over it's four double LP sides, Fuzzy Logic sounds like a Guitar Solos-era Fred Frith musing on Jandek or Carlos Montoya essaying the music of Cecil Taylor, veering from unadorned yet forceful exclamations into torrents of austere, alien gestures packed with modal angst (a rarity in the capital-I Improvisation world), rewarding careful listening with previously unexplored microlandscapes of impossibly interlocked waveforms. Regarding the album's unique sound, Rupp writes, "Echtzeitmusik-people" - referring to the most strident non-idiomists of the Berlin improv scene - "will once again nag at all those minor chords and the indie rock fans will shake their heads in vain looking for the beat. But unrootedness is also a power, a gift, a way." Indeed, Fuzzy Logic is powerfully unrooted. But most strikingly, it tracks Rupp's autodidactic turn into the fraught world of effects pedals. These days, soldering-iron jockeys produce an absurd array of signal processing tools, from bit crushers to tone benders, lo-fi loopers to 24-bit digital arpeggiators, all designed ostensibly as creative tools but more often marketed towards lazy players plying YouTube gear demos rather than pushing their boxes past the limits. Fuzzy Logic, rather, beelines to the tone-smearing outer limits of overdrive, eschewing the well-trodden paths of wail, feedback and sustain to produce a rainbow spray of strange overtones, self-oscillation, and whispered notes beyond the reach of human touch. Tracks like Hundsrück Forest throw the electronics into sharp relief, subtly blending frozen hisses into a larger grid of crackling overtones before bursting into insistent atonal repetition. Powered by a small amp driven by an attenuator which allows maximum blow-out tone at low volumes (combined with a subtly-coaxed sound-stretcher and loop pedal), Rupp amplifies mercurial sonic details into liminal territories typically unexplored by players chained strictly to skin-on-strings. In tandem with the tech, Rupp's singular finger-charge remains. For Rupp, a cluster of fast-moving notes should be considered "one agglomerated sound in motion... using spectralistic fields of tones." Accordingly, every track is packed with motion and color. In a way, Fuzzy Logic echoes Palilalia's previous forays into the exquisitely fried spectrum of electric guitar exemplified by some of Bill Orcutt's records, but more pointedly by Cyrus Pireh's jaw-dropping explorations of speed-runs skittering through grainy distortion.
