Following our exploration of violin sonatas by Finger (CHAN 0824), immersing ourselves in the music of his London contemporaries was a logical next step. Although not wholly unknown nowadays, both Matteis Senior and his son lack the full recognition that they deserve, being overlooked in their countries of origin because they emigrated, and in their new homelands because they were foreign. Determined to put this to rights, we spent innumerable hours exploring their music, spellbound by their vibrant and ever-varying musical worlds. It was a struggle to choose which pieces to record, and plenty more remain, which we sadly had to leave aside. Violin playing today has it's roots in the Italian style of players such as Matteis, and we take it for granted that the violin can move us with abundant expressive colours and effects. The situation in Restoration London was different. Musical style was largely French and no one had heard playing like that of Matteis Senior before. The first significant Italian violinist to arrive in England, he must have seemed like a musical visitor from outer space. His influence, through his performing, teaching, and publications, cannot be overestimated. In 2019, publisher La Volte released The Furtives, the latest novel by science fiction writer Alain Damasio. At the time of it's publication, Damasio invited the band Palo Alto to join him on stage in response to an invitation from the literary festival Oh les beaux jours !, held at La Criée - Théâtre national de Marseille.The project aimed to create a musical and theatrical adaptation of one chapter of the novel, depicting an urban riot in Marseille. Designed to give maximum space to the text, the performance brought together three narrators - Alain Damasio, Jacques Barbéri, and Sophie Zed - alongside Palo Alto performing live (Jacques Barbéri, Laurent Pernice, Philippe Perreaudin). A film directed by Gilles Bénéjam, projected onstage throughout the performance, accompanied both the narration and the music.What was initially intended as a one-off performance at La Criée led to further dates, until a booking agency, Ulysse, added the show to it's roster. Les Furtifs, émeute musicale was subsequently performed across France, Belgium, and Switzerland.The show was recorded during a performance organized by Gonzaï at La Maroquinerie in Paris.
