While the sterile “professionalism” of some heavy bands can be like a clinical drone strike, Texas-based Judiciary feels personal. Like close combat with a knife. And it’s all in their chemistry. Judiciary is an amalgamation of four guys raised in the intersection of metal and hardcore—all devoted to pushing their craft further. Across two esteemed LPs, the band has proven their worth as a crucial entity in the crowded heavy music scene by evolving their sound further and further with each release. And now with the band’s latest Stalagmite Angels, due on September 4th via the venerable Closed Casket Activities, Judiciary can further showcase their status as a crucial, one-of-a-kind part of the evolution of hardcore in 2026. Life changes can bring about chaos and seismic shifts, but if Stalagmite Angels is any indication, then it’s all for the better. In the wake of the release of Judiciary’s second LP Flesh + Blood, the band called upon Juan Vazquez to pick up guitar duties, thereby changing the internal framework of the band for good, and unknowingly for the better. It’s this pivot in personnel that resulted in the band’s latest EP. “The goal with this EP was a hard reset, but we also wanted to chill the f— out a bit, have fun, and do something that felt true to the four of us,” recalls drummer Austin Looney. “We wanted time to reconfigure things and let the music come naturally–temper this new mindset that we've adopted post-Flesh + Blood.” Judiciary’s greatest strength lies in their musical singularity. Though Stalagmite Angels represents the collision of influences from across well-worn territories like metallic hardcore, death metal, black metal, d-beat and more, it’s the Lubbock-born band’s approach that makes it distinctly their own. Stalagmite Angels is a wholly new document that resembles a horde of bands ranging from Hatebreed to Carcass to Slayer to Iron Age, yet never aping any single band nor even revealing any single influence. It’s all familiar but none of it is specific. “90s hardcore and hardcore in general is always gonna be our natural inclination, but it manifests with different elements not only from song to song but within each song,” says vocalist Jake Collinson emphatically, who learned guitar specifically to help with writing new material. “Whether that’s Dying Breed or Cannibal Corpse or Crowbar or Machine Head or any number of other influences that any one of us may have, it all manifests in our work, and through our individual and collective lenses. With this EP, we transformed those ideas into the Judiciary approach.” Stalagmite Angels is an EP about anger at the world, belief in yourself, and how harnessing both in the pursuit of growth is necessary to achieve. But furthermore, it’s a concept record that envisions a subterranean world in both a literal and metaphorical sense—where hidden beauty lurks in the shadows (and in the eye of the beholder) and where triumph manifests in the ability to rise from the depths and into the world above. The concept, according to Collinson, comes from inspiration in films like The Descent, but also from harsh noise and even the music of artists from across the band’s spectrum of influences, like Hank Williams and Peso Pluma. Engineered and produced by Phil Odom at Bad Wolf Recording Studios in Austin and mixed and mastered by Will Putney, Stalagmite Angels was written across the several locations that Judiciary calls home and then synthesized live as a group prior to production. Pioneering Belgian heavy metal band Killer was originally formed in 1980 by guitarist and vocalist Paul 'Shorty' Van Camp and drummer 'Fat' Leo (who sadly passed away on February 13, 2026). Prior to that, both musicians had been active in a rock/blues outfit called Mothers Of Track. The classic Killer line-up was completed by guitarist Ivo 'Spooky' Van Doren. Heavily influenced by the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and Motörhead, the trio quickly gained a reputation for it's loud and aggressive heavy/speed metal and, alongside Acid and Crossfire, became one of Belgium's most successful metal bands. After signing with Mausoleum Records, Killer released a string of classic albums in the early 1980s: Ready For Hell (1981), Wall Of Sound (1982) and Shock Waves (1984), before disbanding for the first time in 1987. Several reunions and five more albums followed, the most recent being Hellfire, released on HNE in 2023. The Grand Finale, Killer's very last studio album featuring Van Camp (guitars/vocals), Ian Anthony (bass) and Vanne (drums). According to Van Camp, the album 'is a dedication to Lemmy of Motörhead, who is one of our all-time heroes.' Nikki and Timothy Chooi are brothers, both Queen Elisabeth Competition laureates, and two of the most internationally active violinists of their generation. Double is their debut recording together: a program of works by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Moszkowski, Leclair, Sarasate, and Dvorák for two violins and piano, one of the lesser-documented formations in the chamber music canon. Joined by pianist Eunice Kim, the album spans three centuries of repertoire written for this combination. Between them, the Chooi brothers have performed at Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Concertgebouw, and Suntory Hall, held the concertmaster chair at the Metropolitan Opera, and hold current positions with the Wiener Concert-Verein, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the University of Ottawa. The Chooi brothers are not conventional soloists in any sense - they learned music in the same room, and their work together reflects a shared musical vocabulary built over decades. Timothy performs the 1714 ""Dolphin"" Stradivarius, once played by Jascha Heifetz, while Nikki performs a 1713 Stradivarius - these two extraordinary instruments, made within a year of each other, lend the duo a unity of color rarely heard in recordings of this repertoire. And Their Power Is Alive is a collaborative record between the Vashon Island based artist Faith Coloccia and Ashville based guitarist Tashi Dorji out September on Whited Sepulchre Records. Coloccia and Dorji's longstanding collaborative relationship and friendship bolsters this massive conceptual weight - the music is as stirring as it is gorgeous, as exploratory as it is surefooted. And Their Power Was Alive manifests and rises up as a profound iteration of the interrelatedness of the personal and the political, poetically. Coloccia's plaintive voice, as always, is clear and stirring, intimate, close, and notably here recorded without reverb. She is steady and her lyrics echo dream phrases which visited her during major life shifts: a drive through the arid desert, explaining the concept of private property to the next generation, intergenerational knowledge and caregiving. All of this establishes a melancholia of reflections on land, history, scale. The first words sung on this record are: ""Cosmic Horror! I am nothing, I am no-one"" and even here, Coloccia is steady. Dorji's glacial layers of distorted howling guitar create a rise and crest and fall - symphonies of noise, roaring but distant like fire in the hills, interwoven with piano, organ, and tubular bells.
