There are collaborations that feel engineered, and then there are those that feel like summer sun’s warmth on a Sunday. Helado Tropical, the debut collaborative album from Helado Negro and Reyna Tropical, belongs to the latter, channeling that easy, sun-drenched tenderness into sound. It didn’t begin with a plan so much as a meeting: two artists orbiting similar questions around language, identity, and music, finally landing in the same room. What followed was less a traditional writing process than a shared unfolding – an instinctive, immersive exchange that stretched across geographies, time zones, and states of being.
The duo first met in June 2024 in North Carolina, brought together by a mutual friend and a loose invitation to spend time in the studio. What might have been a brief session turned into something closer to a three-day sleepover – equal parts conversation, curiosity, and creative risk. Reyna Tropical, accustomed to close-knit collaborations, stepped into new creative territory, while Helado Negro brought a similar sense of curiosity and fluidity.
What emerged was immediate, rather than easing into collaboration, the two found themselves propelled forward by it – building songs in real time, responding to each other’s instincts without over-explaining them. There was no rigid division of roles. One would begin an idea, the other would answer. A melody would suggest a rhythm; a rhythm would reshape a lyric.
Across Helado Tropical, there is a noticeable absence of constraint: not just musically, but conceptually. Both artists share a long-standing resistance to the expectations often placed on Latin music: what it should sound like, how it should feel, what stories it should tell. As they do individually, these two artists create space for something more fluid and personal on this project.
What makes Helado Tropical particularly resonant is the sense of trust that underpins it. Trust in each other, of course, but also trust in instinct and in the process. Much of the album was written through improvisation, with meaning revealing itself only later, as the artists listened back and reflected.
In that way, the project functions as both creation and documentation: a record of a specific time, place, and connection. Reyna Tropical describes it as a form of archiving – capturing not just songs, but the emotional and relational context in which they were made. “It was a lot of processing, a lot of transition” they say about where they were at personally. Ultimately, it was about understanding that “this is supposed to be released so we could keep going. I really feel like this album does that personally, and hopefully is able to hold that for other people too.” That forward motion propelled by release is felt in every part of the album. It hums beneath the surface of even its quietest moments, carrying a sense of continuation, and of something still unfolding. Ultimately, Helado Tropical encapsulates a moment of two artists meeting at the right moment, with the right openness, allowing something larger than either of them to take shape. It is spontaneous yet intentional, grounded yet expansive, deeply personal yet invitingly universal.
And this convergence of forces is just the beginning.

Douglas Robinson and Sal Mignano (both of The Sleeping) and Josh Eppard (cofounding member of Coheed And Cambria) share passions for authentic expressionand genuine creativity. Held. Isn't so much a beginning as it is a culmination. The post-hardcore trio's debut album, GREY, arrives fully realized, not as the tentativefirst step of newcomers, but as the collective fire of seasoned lifers discovering a new language together. It's the sound of raw instinct coalescing with earned wisdom.GREY doesn't announce itself so much as it emerges, inevitable and undeniable, like thunder rolling across a dark horizon. It's a force that feels eternal. Held.'s music feels elemental, evoking storms crashing against jagged cliffs or burning embers kindling, ready to reignite at any moment. It's urgent and relentless, yet also spacious, textured, and deeply human. There's gravity in every note, the kind that comes from survival turned into strength. Their sound is born of paradox: fiercely old-school in it's emphasis on live performance and feel, but modern in it's production and scope. Each song sounds both timeless and timely. Held. Is less a band than a force: fierce yet vulnerable, raw yet refined. They play as if the walls themselves are trembling, channeling a purity that feels rare in an age of algorithmic noise. Listening isn't consumption-it's recognition, like rediscovering something that's always been within you. Held. #carve out a place that feels both unshakably grounded and dangerously alive. It's more than music-it's an invocation, a reminder of the raw pulse that connects struggle to transcendence. For those who find themselves in the storm, Held. #offer not escape, but resonance: proof that inevitability can sound like liberation. One of the most free spirited and inspired indie rock debuts our island has seen for a while, Her's had seemingly AAA backstage access to styles and eras that made home in their mutant retro-futurist sound. There was always something instantly charismatic about Stephen and Audun which proved pivotal in shooting their jangly, oddball pop into the major leagues. Luminous guitar lines, tremulous dissonant vocals and an arsenal of gorgeous melodies, the collection tilts from rock to bossa nova, surf to garage, 50s ballad to indie classic. Through laughter and art, Her's take us away from the strife of everyday life and into a world that's a surreal reflection of our own, built from the detritus of novelty items in junk shops, bargain bin b-movies and late-night cop shows. Under the facade and strange world of characters and humour there lies a deeper undercurrent, this approach is one of the subtle reasons Her's stand apart and through this vehicle their messages still have the potential to shift perceptions.

Many bands promising uniqueness write a bum cheque. Her's, not only offer individuality, distinctiveness and originality, but an entire world brimming with fully realised characters and sounds. Where romance fades, bromance remains and like a pair of matching monogrammed bathrobes hanging side-by-side, it's rare to find a partnership so loveably kitsch and destined to belong together as Stephen and Audun. Stories and characters emerge throughout the collection, revealing an off-kilter world of atmospheric slacker pop, instilled with voyeuristic humour. A collection of all their early singles, and a few new tracks thrown in for good measure, Her's channel the surreal and the sublime through a twist of tropical technicolour. Each song it's own little microcosm of oddness. Intricately windy, bendy guitars are flung around a tight drum machine clatter to deliver a genuine indie classic.

NYC-based indie rockers Hiding Places release their debut LP, The Secret to Good Living, on April 3, 2026 with Keeled Scales. Refined through years of live performance and studio work, their debut LP is the first in their catalog recorded together in a professional studio, instead of in their separate home bases. Originally hailing from North Carolina and Georgia, the band includes Audrey Keelin (vocals, guitar), Nicholas Byrne (vocals, guitar), Henry Cutting (drums), and Michael Matsikis (bass, production). Together, they've developed a forward-thinking sound with a sense of nostalgia built into it: a blend that draws from the collage-like indie rock of Yo La Tengo, the elegant slowcore of The New Year, the riffy story-songs of Drive-By Truckers, and the analog hum of The Microphones.Hiding Places (noun)Definition of Hiding Places1. : Being in a place of the present moment that a song transports you to.

The band's second album with 4AD, recorded in Warren Defever's home studio and remixed by Ivo Watts-Russell and John Fryer (as with their debut), sees 23 songs quick-firing through emotions, with moments of soothing calm soon clashing with white noise and visceral chaos. Highlights include "Her Eyes Were Huge", on which lightly strummed acoustic guitar uplift Karin Oliver's swooning, gossamer drawl; the synth-led, inquisitive and prickly "Are We Still Married?"; and pensive instrumental waltz "Siting Still Moving Still Staring Outlooking". A varied yet grounded compilation of new material and old (some dating back to Defever's junior high days), it finds the band entering a confident creative stride, leaving listeners enthralled by both it's beauty and darkness and proving Defever's inspired productions utterly unique. "Dark, disturbing, and beautiful [...] Held together by Warren Defever's artful production, it's 23 songs range from jealous contemplation to spiritual concerns, from gentle folk to white noise guitar outbursts. Karin Oliver's supple voice lends itself to an array of musical and emotional settings." - AllMusic

A storied part of the early 4AD catalog, His Name Is Alive - the creative outlet of Michigan musician Warren Defever - was signed to the label in 1989, after founder Ivo Watts-Russell fell in love with their dark and fragmented sonic inclinations via cassette demos sent in the post. The project's debut record, Livonia (named after Defever's hometown), was released in June 1990. While His Name Is Alive's sound was in line with the gothic echoes of labelmates Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, they also had a different, nonpareil quality, something existing on the boundary of this earth and another realm further underground. It was this otherness that piqued interest and proved the fulcrum of an unpredictable sound that often changed tack before listeners could second guess.A product of nearly ten years of Defever's home recordings, produced and mixed by Watts-Russell and his This Mortal Coil collaborator John Fryer, their debut Livonia cemented the band's presence among the 4AD's well-established ethereal lineage, reinventing and refracting the 4AD sound through a prism. A study in shadows, the album examined the dual themes of love and loss, being woozily delivered as if dreamlike. When reissued a few years later in the US, the album's title track was added - a non-linear study in guitar distortion - which completed the record and is a track that now stands out as one of the band's finest moments.

His Name Is Alive's final record on 4AD, the first where the band controlled all processes including mixing, saw a marked shift; their most diverse, yet accessible catalog entry. The project's soaring growth over time allowed Defever to employ an extraordinarily adventuring approach to the record's sound and vision, indulging his love for all kinds of music, be it tastes of looped dub ("Lord, Make Me A Channel of Your Peace", "The Homesick Waltz"), sugar-sweet 1960s pop ("Baby Fish Mouth", "Lip"), distortion-laden dream-gaze ("Can't Go Wrong Without You"), evocative alt-noise ("Sick"), or strummy folk ("Where Knock Is Open Wide"). Embracing the surreal and turning their experimentalism up a notch and with Defever's studio skills truly blossoming, many see this as a high point for the band. "Like a DIY cocktail of My Bloody Valentine's dreamy noise and the wee-hours arthouse sigh of fellow 4AD'ers This Mortal Coil, [Mouth By Mouth] generates a tremolo- and fuzz-laden frenzy underscoring Defever's debt to '60s garage psych." - Bandcamp Daily

Hiss Golden Messenger - I'm People. The brand-new album from Hiss Golden Messenger and the first release with Chrysalis Records. I'm People is a vivid, deeply human album born from a period of rupture, renewal, and vast American wandering. Written across Bolinas, the North Carolina Piedmont, and a Santa Fe motel room, the record traces the artist's search for clarity through landscapes both external and internal. These songs move through heartbreak, aging, fatherhood, desire, disillusionment, and the hard-won hope that remains after the spirit has been scraped bare. Produced with Josh Kaufman at Dreamland, a decommissioned church outside Woodstock, the album carries the warmth of musicians playing live in a circle, stained-glass light filtering across guitars, drums, and upright bass. Contributions from Bruce Hornsby, Sam Beam, Marcus King, Sara Watkins, Amy Helm, Eric D. Johnson, and members of Dawes enrich a sound world that feels immediate, vulnerable, and fully alive. "I'm People is an intensely human record, and so one that needed to feel immediate, vulnerable, and fully dancing; something you could touch, sing along to, know about, recognize, relate with. I know what the record is to me and I bet it's not so dissimilar from what it's about to you, at least in the broad strokes: The heartbreak and exhilaration, the absolute black comedy of being a person on this razor's edge that is America circa 2025. What other choice do we have than to be hopeful?" - MC Taylor on I'm People. Hiss Golden Messenger is a Grammy nominated artist based in North Carolina, with multiple Album Of The Year and Best Americana Album awards, reaching #2 in the Americana Charts and performances and tours across the world, including the UK and Europe + performances on US TV; Late Night With Seth Myers.

Working alongside experimental duo Lorelle Meets the Obsolete at their studio El Derrumbe inEnsenada, Mexico, the sessions folded community into the album, though it's emotional core hadalready formed over months of pre-production. Joo Joo Ashworth, mixing engineer and longtimefriend, also provided a pivotal presence helping crystallize the album's rhythmic language andsubtly expanding the band's sound. The songs began reflecting conversations about fatherhood andpartnership, breakups and estrangement, the queasy acceleration of AI, and what it means toremain present and principled while the world lurches unpredictably forward. This tension is not announced but absorbed into the music. Holy Wave stretches their familiar senseof woozy atmosphere into something leaner and more direct. There are more loops and sampleswoven throughout than before, grooves that feel constructed, cyclical, hypnotic. Some tracks drifttoward dub's elastic spaciousness; others pulse with cinematic downtempo gravity. There is a freshsense of momentum throughout the record, rhythms that pull forward, dream-saturated textures, sheets of fuzz, and softly suspended vocals. "dewey's dirge" unfolds patiently: hazy guitars bloom, a softened motorik pulse moving steadilybeneath. The vocals remain submerged, widening rather than exploding. It feels expansive andreflective, a comedown hymn that trades drama for immersion. "i'm DADA," by contrast, locks into alean, circular groove. A tight drum figure, rubbery bassline, and clipped guitar phrase repeat untilthey begin to feel animate. Lyrically, the song circles the complicated devotion of fatherhood, writtenin a brief pocket of rare solitude for a parent: Always loving (Try to do what's right) / Alwayslearning (There's never enough time). "s33. u. in/HAL" plays like a transmission caught midair, faintlymechanical, immersive without ever fully resolving, capturing the album's central sensation: the act oftrying to communicate clearly through static. If earlier Holy Wave records often felt defined by their sense of drift, i'm DADA feels newlygrounded. The album doesn't abandon immersion; it disciplines it. Grooves settle, repetitions accrueweight, and the music is composed and unshaken amongst it's heavier themes. What emerges is notreinvention but a sharpening, with Holy Wave sounding less like

Buoyed by the joy of creating their 2022 album - Confidence - The Hoosiers are swaggering back through the saloon doors of the music industry with both barrels locked and loaded. Armed with their sixth album, Irwin Sparkes & Alan Sharland pick up where they left off; honing a more adult take on the jubilant sound that made a name for them back in 2007. Reflections between the duo probed the question of why even bother to make an album - at considerable cost - in an age with scant regard for the form? "The conversation that had been picked up with fans following Confidence had taken on a momentum of it's own and we were compelled not to lose something so valuable", says Irwin. With Compassion, Al & Irwin wished to imbue the listener with this new-found sense of self-belief in what they do and who they are. This time the question of how to focus the album was handled in a novel way: "Releasing an album into the world is like releasing your intentions so we wanted to approach it as if we had a genie offering us one wish", says Al Sharland. "On a personal and political level, it's apparent that we could all do with more compassion." The way we talk to ourselves influencing how we talk to each other and thereby creating the world in which we live; this tied together the songs already written ('Everybody Is A Little More Broken Than They Pretend To Be', and 'Don't Hang Your Head') with those that would be written with the concept of compassion in mind ('Permission To Rest'). Perhaps where compassion is needed the most is when it comes to people who don't share our values and this is what the title track 'Compassion' is grappling with. "We love playing in this band more than ever and we feel so loved by the fans we have and this album is a big, stanky hug back to them", clarifies Irwin. "We don't just want to leave the world with better music than when we found it", winks Al, "we want to leave it a more confident, compassionate spinning orb.

FFO: No Doubt, Save Ferris, Less Than Jake and The Interrupters. Horizon Point emerged in 2021 in Modesto, California in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jen and Jordan Waters formed the band after playing together as an acoustic duo for many years. They were sick of performing at the same local wine bars every weekend, singing cover songs that didn't reflect their true musical calling. This left Jen and Jordan feeling unfulfilled as songwriters and artists. The shutdown inspired them to reclaim their punk rock roots and strive towards greater authenticity in their music. Horizon Point was born! The band includes Jen Waters (vocals/sax), Jordan Waters (vocals/guitar), Raul Ontiveros (trombone), Adam Castellanos (drums), and Blake Boetto (bass). All members co-collaborate in the songwriting process, and are multi-instrumentalists, making Horizon Point a truly unique and dynamic group. The band has worked diligently to gain recognition in their local and regional scenes, winning ""Best Punk Artist"" at the Modesto Area Music Awards in 2023, and have now been signed to Manic Kat Records.
