Disc Two: Yet more nostalgia... also been wanting to record a covers record for some time and worked out the following criteria: (1) deep-cut rock music from my sweet spot, the aforementioned '60s-early '70s and (2) tunes with instrumental sections that could be argued as to be "progressive" in nature, in most cases songs that were a little outside the more well-known pop tunes those artists were known for. Yet, for several years, they were there for the hell of the grind, committed to playing any and every show they could get, from sparse opening slots in Bristol to out of town dives. Chat to them long enough and they'll often reminisce about their very first gig overseas, performing in a leaky barn to a French crowd of two in the commune of La Zad. 'One was a man sitting facing away from the stage smoking a bong, and the other was literally a dog'. For most bands, this might be a lowpoint. However, as the duo recall, it was anything but: 'We knew if we could enjoy playing that gig, then we'd enjoy any gig'. It's this irrepressible, anarchic joy that has endeared them to audiences everywhere they've travelled, and has once again been effortlessly captured on their new record 'Massive Champion'. Ghinzu return with W. O. W. A, their fourth studio album and their first in 17 years. Long in the making, the record draws from an extensive creative period during which the band wrote nearly 90 fully formed ideas before refining them into the final tracklisting. "We had all these hard drives everywhere," recalls frontman John Descamps. "We wanted to bring together 10 tracks that truly represented all those years of condensed work. " The result sees Ghinzu return to their foundations while pushing into uncharted territory. Their formative influences - the energy and expression of Queen; the raucous grunge noise of Nirvana and The Melvins - remain, alongside their passion for visual art. Citing painters Gerhard Richter and Francis Bacon as key inspirations, the band stepped back from perfectionism to embrace a more instinctive and visceral approach to songwriting. Recorded at Hillside Manor in Los Angeles, W. O. W. A was made alongside the acclaimed Dave Sardy, who became an additional member of the band. The results speak for themselves. W. O. W. A (When Other Worlds Await) is a terrific record, laced with raw pulsions and engineered tensions. The distillation of a decade's worth of ideas, it finds Ghinzu reveling in creative maturity.
