Nimbus West spirit jazz essential: the Creative Arts Ensemble's classic debut One Step Out. One of the most sought after and highly-regarded titles to have appeared on Tom Albach's celebrated Nimbus West imprint, One Step Out is a timeless work of spiritualized jazz. A true gem from the Los Angeles jazz underground, the album was pianist and composer Kaeef Ruzadun Ali's first recording as leader of the Creative Arts Ensemble, the only large ensemble group that emerged directly from Horace Tapscott's legendary Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra community jazz group. A Los Angeles native, Kaeef was introduced to the Tapscott circle in the late 1970s. His first experience of the Arkestra's ethos was through PAPA tenorist Michael Session, who took him to the famous 'Great House' at 2412 South Western Ave., LA - a large mansion house which members of the Arkestra had taken over as a space for communal living. Life in the Great House was a continuous stream of music, dance and community events. 'When I walked in there,' recalled Kaeef, 'it was like this whole rush came over me, just from going in the front door - It was like a very, very warm feeling of love. I went and I came out with 'Flashback Of Time', and that was my first arrangement.' Kaeef quickly became a significant contributor of compositions to the Arkestra's songbook - his piece 'New Horizon' would be recorded by Horace Tapscott for the latter's Tapscott Sessions series. But 'Flashback Of Time' would eventually appear on One Step Out, played by the new group he had put together from stalwart Arkestra members. Inspired by both Tapscott's example and by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Kaeef had wanted to follow their lead by assembling a larger unit. Featuring seasoned Arkestra regulars including reedsman Dadisi Komolafe, drummer Woody 'Sonship' Theus and altoist Gary Bias, with veterans Henry 'The Skipper' Franklin on bass and George Bohannon on trombone, One Step Out is a key document of the Los Angeles radical jazz underground. Featuring the sanctified vocals of Kaeef's sister, B. J. Crowley, the album is a tour de force of spiritually energized independent jazz music.

Dave Liebman and David Burrell are free jazz legends who have been both prolific sidemen and leaders. Their discographies from 1968 until today trace the entire history of creative improvised music with generous helpings of genre-defying music with dashes of rock, r&b in addition to their free output. For this project, they performed as a duet with the recording signals from their instruments (soprano saxophone for Mr. Liebman and piano for Mr. Burrell) completely separated so that the listener will only hear one instrument each in each of their stereo speakers. As such, this functions as the second in our Hard Pan series. Strap in for high-level musical conversations across this unusual and cohesive album.

The second album by composer, arranger and producer David Axelrod, Songs of Experience (1969) follows his debut Song of Innocence. It was recorded after the death of his son Scott, and is, thus, a work concerned with mortality and spirituality. Again, it was inspired by the 18th-century poems of William Blake, set to the urban bombast of a full Los Angeles orchestra, with Wrecking Crew vets contributing dark funk. The album includes the hits "The Human Abstract" and "The Fly," the former later sampled by DJ Shadow. Songs of Experience showcases powerful orchestral textures, smooth jazz vibes, and experimental sounds that were ahead of it's time, remaining a timeless masterpiece.

Celebrating it's legacy from the 1976 LP and 1990 CD release, Stable Mable returns in May 2026 as a newly remastered 180g audiophile edition (G1040). Captured in Copenhagen just weeks after Dexter Gordon's ambitious orchestral project SCCD 31030 More Than You Know, this session strips the setting back to it's purest form: a no-frills blowing date where Gordon's imagination, authority, and melodic wit shine without disguise. Joined by Horace Parlan, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, and Tony Inzalaco, Gordon navigates standards like Just Friends, Misty, Red Cross, and So What with a mix of relaxed confidence and fiery invention. His soprano reading of In a Sentimental Mood adds a rare, reflective touch. Remastered from the original tapes, this edition highlights the quartet's clarity, swing, and interplay-an essential snapshot of Gordon's Copenhagen years and a definitive statement of his enduring mastery. Right from the start, Al di Meola brilliantly displays his amazing guitar skills and appreciation of gorgeous melodies. Utilizing concentration and devotion to his craft rather than simply performing routines make this performance an extraordinary experience. His masterful skills combined with feelings of emotion create a spectrum of musical ideas. Al di Meola assembled a thoroughly excellent group of musicians for this review of his career spanning almost three decades. It is a fantastic combination of romantic chamber music, traditional Latin American music and the freedom of jazz, constantly switching between off-the-cuff improvisation and intricate musical arrangements. Time and time again the musicians alter familiar music with surprising rhythmic changes to construct a marvelous soundscape. A truly magical concert. 180gram 33rppm. Limited Numbered Edition.

Vinyl LP pressing. Dinah Shore was one of the USA's most popular and successful entertainers, her peak recording career spanning the war years and the immediate post-war decades, when she also became a high-profile TV host with her own weekly Chevrolet-sponsored show, which more or less defined the USA in the 1950s. She was one of the very first female singers to come to prominence purely as a solo artist, rather than as a big band singer, and was such a prolific chart performer that, having had her first hit in 1939, she had racked up more than 50 hits by the end of the '40s, including memorable No.1s like "I'll Walk Alone", "Anniversary Song", "The Gypsy" and "Buttons And Bows". She continued scoring hits through what was often called the "Golden age of popular music" in the early '50s, scoring her final chart entry in 1960, by which time the rock 'n' roll and teen revolution had largely superseded artists of her generation. This fantastic 15 track LP provides a great introduction to Shore's prolific success by featuring the recordings which brought her greatest popularity. On top of her huge hits already mentioned, it also includes "Candy", "Dear Hearts & Gentle People", "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "Sweet Violets", all showcasing her distinctive style and talent and provides an entertaining and nostalgic celebration of an artist who was such a glamorous icon of her era.

Marcos Valle -"Samba '68 (Verve Vault Series)" [180g Heavy Vinyl LP] Samba '68, released on Verve, introduced Brazilian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marcos Valle to a wider international audience. Already established in Brazil through songs such as "Samba de Verao" ("Summer Samba"), Valle worked here with producer Creed Taylor on a recording that pairs Brazilian rhythmic forms with contemporary American studio orchestration. The sessions include vocals by Anamaria Valle and arrangements by Eumir Deodato. The repertoire features English-language versions of compositions co-written by Valle, including "So Nice (Summer Samba)," "Chup Chup, I Got Away," and "Safely In Your Arms," alongside additional material that reflects his economical writing and feather-light rhythmic approach. The album documents a meeting point between Brazilian popular music and international pop-jazz studio practice at the end of the 1960s. The Verve Vault series is always mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal. Towa Bird returns with her sophomore album Gentleman - 11 songs that navigate the tension between masculine and feminine archetypes, delivered with undeniable confidence and swagger from one of music's most promising voices. Featuring the singles "Dirty Habit" and "Dog," with contributions from Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna, Gentleman sharpens Towa's guitar-driven rush into a world of queer romance and self-assured style - equal parts charm, humor, vulnerability, and bite. Produced by Patrick Wimberly (MGMT, Blood Orange, Solange. ) Pressed on red vinyl. Donald Byrd -"The Cat Walk (Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition)".

This album brings together key tracks from Doug Carn, recorded for Black Jazz Records in the 1970s. Doug Carn is one of the most important (and least recognised) forces in the creation of the canon of 'deep and spiritual jazz music' - full of powerfully emotive intensity, consciously-uplifting lyricism and addictively beautiful melodies. All of his LPs during this period have since achieved cult classic status, including 'Infant Eyes', 'Adam's Apple', 'Spirit of the New Land' and 'Revelation'. Aside from his songwriting and keyboard skills, many of the tracks here feature the stunning and powerful 5-octave range vocals of Jean Carn (later Carne), his wife at the time. Musicians featured on this album include Alphonse Mouzon, Charles Tolliver, Henry Franklin, Michael Carvin, Walter Booker, Ronnie Laws and others. Aside from Carn's compositions there are also striking interpretations of music by Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson and Wayne Shorter. Black Jazz became one of the defining labels of independent and conscious jazz music in the 1970s, alongside other important labels such as Strata-East and Tribe Records. As well as this Best of Doug Carn release, Soul Jazz Records are also releasing a Best of Black Jazz Records collection at the same time.

Storyville Records proudly announces the release of Never Say Yes - 1986, a previously unreleased live-in-studio recording by the Doug Raney Quartet, captured in Studio 3 at the Danish Broadcasting Corporation on January 9, 1986. The album features Doug Raney on guitar, Ben Besiakov on piano, Jesper Lundgaard on bass, and Finnish drummer Jukkis Uotila. Never Say Yes - 1986 offers seventracks of inspired modern jazz, full of interplay, elegance, andtechnical brilliance.Doug Raney, the son of jazz guitar legend Jimmy Raney, carvedout a distinctive path of his own, particularly within the vibrantScandinavian jazz scene, where he lived and worked fordecades. This recording, unearthed from the archives of theDanish Broadcasting Corporation, captures Doug in strikinglyfine form following a return to health, backed by some of themost intuitive players on the Scandinavian scene."He had an incredibly refined technique on the guitar, I'd almostcall it organically innate, " writes bassist Jesper Lundgaard in theliner notes. "His playing felt like an extension of his personality, effortless, and yet grounded in a deep understanding of jazz'sinner architecture, which is so difficult to truly master. Doug had aspecial ability to voice chords, and in my opinion, there was abeauty in his soloing that only very few possess."The session was the culmination of a brief Danish tour andshowcases Raney's wide-ranging repertoire, from the burningdrive of John Coltrane's Giant Steps to the aching beauty of I'mOld Fashioned and a soulful take on Nat Adderley's title track.Raney's melodic instinct, rhythmic command, and harmonicdepth shine throughout, with dynamic support from Besiakov, Lundgaard, and Uotila.Despite his remarkable talent, Doug Raney remains a somewhatoverlooked figure in modern jazz. With this release, StoryvilleRecords shines a new light on a singular voice whose artistryremain as vital and moving as ever. This is one of Eddie Harris' great records. The playing is inspired! What a band! Cedar Walton (piano) and Billy Higgins (drums), Lee Morgan's favourite rhythm section. The underrated but popular tenor saxophonist introduces his "Freedom Jazz Dance," which would become a jazz standard after featuring on Miles Davis' album Miles Smiles. Plays one of the earlier versions of "The Shadow of Your Smile," romps on "Love for Sale" and "'S Wonderful," and also performs "Born to Be Blue" and his own "Cryin' Blues." Harris is heard in prime form in a quartet/quintet with pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Billy Higgins, and part-time trumpeter Ray Codrington. A gem.

Vinyl LP repressing of this collaborative album between to of Jazz's greatest starts. The evening before Louis Armstrong recorded this album, both he and Miss Fitzgerald were appearing in an all-star concert also featuring Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson that was recorded for an album entitled Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1956). The following day the two singers, along with the Oscar Peterson Trio, were in a Los Angeles studio to record this gem of an album. With no time for rehearsals the songs were all set in Louis' key to make it easier, but this in no way inhibits Ella's performance. Another challenge for Pops was the fact that the material was not his normal repertoire, meaning he had to learn things on the fly in the studio. Again there's no hint of any issues, which all goes to highlight Armstrong's innate musical ability.
