In 1953, Brazilian master guitarist Laurindo Almeida and altoist/flutist Bud Shank collaborated on their first LP for Richard Bock's Pacific Jazz label. Evil tongues predicted the end of the Paul BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND when the guitar virtuoso Mike Bloomfield left the group to form Electric Flag. However, the ensemble actually expanded, now including a horn section which added a more jazzy sound, while Chicago blues remained as a basis. Elvin Bishop took on the role of lead guitarist and his nickname was adopted as the name of the album. Butterfield himself played the harmonica and sang, while his band grew together to form one of the most cohesive formations of their time. Butterfield's best-known song ""One More Heartache"" opens the album, which in the meantime has undoubtedly become a blues-rock classic with superb harmonica and a catchy beat that is driven onwards by the top-notch horns. ""Driftin' & Driftin'"" is a further well-known piece that carries on for over nine minutes; here the brass sob and sigh while Sanborn delivers a brilliant solo performance in the choruses. In addition to cover versions by B. T. Jones (""Born Under A Bad Sign""), Otis Rush (""Double Trouble"") and Roosevelt Sykes (""Drivin' Wheel""), two compositions by Butterfield are included: ""Run Out Of Time"" and the somewhat psychedelic ""Tollin' Bells"" where Bishop's guitar and Naftalin's floating keyboard conjure up a haunting feeling. The stunning pastiche cover, a nod to the flower power era of those times, completes this release, which marks a new phase in the career of the Paul BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND that would endure for a long time. This approach functions just as well in slow motion: Coltrane's miniature, slow composition ""Naima"" is performed in a flowing and inspired manner by the duo on their acoustic guitars.The arrangements carry Santana's hallmark: the occasionally somewhat intellectual but certainly not long-pondered-over sound is enhanced by the sound of agitated congo beats and the chanted vocals are heard as if from afar. Salvant, who has performed with orchestras regularly over the last decade-and-a-half and intended to make an album with one sooner in her career, but logistics and her abundant creative ideas led to other new projects intervening. Although the hippy flower-power movement tended towards a rather different musical genre at the end of the Sixties, they were blown away by this music. The four artists attracted masses of people and ensured that every seat was taken and all standing room filled at jazz festivals such as Newport, Molde (Norway), Antibes (France) and the Fillmore East and West. The super group also appeared in Monterey, 120 Km south of San Francisco, the centre of the hippy movement, on 18 September 1966.

Charles Lloyd pays homage to his dear friend and longtime collaborator Zakir Hussain with Sangam & Friends, an extraordinary document of the deep musical camaraderie between the legendary saxophonist/flutist and master tablaist along with their Sangam trio mate drummer Eric Harland. The album is built around studio recordings made in Mumbai in 2009 for an album that was begun but never completed featuring an expanded ensemble with Carnatic singer Vijay Prakash, Rakesh Chaurasia on bansuri, Sabir Khan on sarangi, Ranjit Barot on keyboard, and Niladri Kumar on sitar.
