Portrait in Jazz was Bill Evans' third album as a leader, following New Jazz Conceptions (1956) and Everybody Digs Bill Evans (1958). It was also Evans' first album as a leader with the talented bassist Scott LaFaro. Their superb interaction is evident from the very first track, and Evans was certainly aware of this. The collaboration between Evans and LaFaro would reach it's peak with their recordings made in June 1961 at the Village Vanguard in New York City. LaFaro died shortly afterward in a car accident (July 6, 1961), at the age of 25.

In 1953, Brazilian master guitarist Laurindo Almeida and altoist/flutist Bud Shank collaborated on their first LP for Richard Bock's Pacific Jazz label. Laurindo Almeida Quartet Featuring Bud Shank was a groundbreaking recording, blending American jazz with Brazilian samba for the first time, years before the advent of bossa nova. Almeida and Shank enjoyed such early success with the record that they reunited five years later for their second collaboration, Holiday in Brazil (alternatively titled Brazilliance, Vol. 2). Whereas Brazilliance, Vol. 1 was led by Almeida and focused on the traditional Brazilian influences, Vol. 2 allowed Shank room to contribute more of his signature silky soloing and energetic motifs. The vibe is almost as relaxed, but bristles with an adventurous energy and swing that serves Almeida's arrangements and solid guitar accompaniment perfectly. The session is immeasurably enhanced by the adept chops of bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Chuck Flores, while Dayton "Bones" Howe's warm and detailed recording brings forth every nuance of this inspired date. The songs were mainly inspired by an assortment of friends, pets and other critters - living or otherwise. The Norwegian Jazz trio Bushman's Revenge mixes the energy of Rock with the freedom of Jazz in an exciting and exhilarating way. Formed in 2003, the trio (consisting of Even Helte Hermansen on Guitar, Rune Nergaard on Bass and Gard Nilssen on Drums) has had two decades in which to explore different paths and sounds, and in doing so, succeeding in creating a genre all of their own.
