With it's three compositions by Thelonious Monk, one might call this LP from 1964 "3 Standards and 3 Monks". The 'High Priest' of bebop had reached a further pinnacle in his career and performed with his fantastic, skilful and well-rehearsed quartet at numerous festivals and concerts. As if in a dream, the musicians penetrate the apparently simple yet rhythmically complicated themes, interrupted again and again by Monk's solo escapades on the piano. On the stage, Monk often stood up and jigged around the piano like a lumbering dancing bear, with one of his distinctive hats on his head; he plonks down on the piano stool after the Charlie Rouse solo; his enormous feet tap back and forth to the beat; he constantly fiddles with the ring on his finger; and he creates the most wonderful improvisations ever heard with his 'false' fingering.Calling all jazz fans: Listen to Thelonious Monk, and you will have a ball - most especially if you put this super disc with the promising title "It's Monks Time" on your turntable!." Recording: January - March 1964Production: Teo Macero." "It's Monk's Time" - Thelonious Monk (p); Charlie Rouse (ts); Butch Warren (b); Ben Riley (dr)." standard sleeve

Cut You Where You Was marks the return of saxophonist, flutist, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Henry Threadgill's flagship band Zooid. It's their first release since 2021's Poof, which Downbeat asserted "visits strange territories, upsets our sense of scale and value but delivers whole new musical worlds." It also marks the 25th anniversary of their first album Up Popped the Two Lips, the inaugural release by Pi Recordings, which was first founded with the inspiration to document new releases from Threadgill. Their new album exhibits the continued growth of Zooid's unique sound. Featuring original members Liberty Ellman on guitar, Jose Davila on trombone and tuba, Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums, and cellist Christopher Hoffman, who has been a member for over a decade and a half, the band exhibits a sense of ease with Threadgill's knotty compositional sense, achieving their signature quality with less strict adherence to the distinctive interval-based compositional system that won Threadgill a Pulitzer Prize for his landmark work In for a Penny, In for a Pound. The album comprises a number of brief pieces that are inspired by Threadgill's fascination with early recording technologies: Their short recording durations force each musician to make their statements quickly rather than through protracted development. This limitation helps open new possibilities for musical expression, making Cut You Where You Was another tour-de-force from one of the most important artists of last half-century.

Creative Inspirations is the debut recording by Trio Imagination, an extraordinary collaboration that brings together pianist David Virelles, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Andrew Cyrille. It pairs Virelles - who is known for his all-encompassing approach to creativity that is deeply-rooted in the Cuban influences of his upbringing - with two towering figures of creative music, whose individual work have helped shape the evolution of modern jazz for more than six decades. Together, they create music that is spacious, lyrical, and uncompromisingly inventive, grounded in profound listening and collective imagination. The group evolved out of Trio 3, which featured saxophonist Oliver Lake alongside Cyrille and Workman. Following Lake's retirement, the remaining members invited Virelles to help continue the group's legacy. Recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio, the album captures three master improvisers in an intimate, deeply expressive dialogue that unfolds through shared intuition, revealing an ensemble whose interplay is marked by subtlety, trust, and fearless exploration. From the 1930's through the 1960's, Central Avenue was the heart of ""the Harlem of the West,"" a vibrant cauldron of Black culture - especially music - via the nightclubs, record stores and street life that drew Hollywood stars and music lovers from all over Los Angeles -as highlighted in the major film ""Devil With a Blue Dress,""starring Denzil Washington. The Central Avenue scene, fueled by ground-breaking independent Black-owned record labels, fostered a mix of jazz, blues, rhythm 'n'blues and proto rock 'n' roll that evoked a special mood of good times and love both lost and and found. Such artists as Charles Mingus,Charles Brown, Dexter Gordon, Nat ""King"" Cole, and Jimmy Witherspoon emerged as stars from the scene. This compilation brings together twelve tracks - most of them hits - by artists who defined the Central Avenue scene of the Fortiesand Fifties. Included are the rare original versions of the hits ""I Wonder"" by Cecil Gant and ""Pink Champagne"" by Joe Liggins and His Honeydrippers.

Two of spiritual jazz legends-Pharoah Sanders and Wendell Harrison-finally converge in spirit on this extraordinary recording. Carrying forward the legacy of John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders devoted his life to transcending the physical boundaries of sound, creating deeply spiritual music until his passing in 2022. Meanwhile, Wendell Harrison-leader of Detroit's TRIBE collective-has remained steadfast in independently advancing Black consciousness and spiritual jazz from a grassroots perspective. Though they never met in life, these two artists are brought together through a tribute performance dedicated to Sanders. Recorded in July 2025, under the guiding theme of "Love & Peace," this powerful live document sees the TRIBE Jazz Ensemble channeling Sanders' spirit, offering healing and unity in a world marked by turmoil. A historically significant recording and a deeply moving statement, this release stands as a message from P-VINE to jazz listeners worldwide-honoring legacy, spirituality, and the enduring power of music. Yusuf Lateef was a leading representative of world music, long before world music was known as such in the jazz, pop and rock community. He integrated all kinds of oriental instruments in his jazz music, such as the koto, bamboo flute and tambura and also - as in this case - in his blues compositions. His saxophone playing is also flawless too and full of wonderful textures, hard and impulsive at one moment, cool and exotic at the next. On this album Lateef explores, in a painterly way, the border areas of the blues, in all their various guises and addresses both eastern and western cultures. "Juba Juba" begins with a drumbeat on a slave ship, the tempo builds up slowly and agonizingly, and is only penetrated by Lateef's plaintive flute and background voices singing »freedom, freedom, freedom«. After such a gloomy beginning the classical blues number "Like It Is" comes over like a breath of fresh air, with it's superb string quartet as the foundation. The R&B contributions on the other tracks testify to Lateef's skilled excursions into the realm of the blues, while the truly adventurous tracks such as "Back Home" and the mystic, Chinese odyssey "Moon Cup" weave a magical net of sheer pleasure. "The Blue Yusef Lateef" is in every possible way absolutely breathtaking. It is a milestone as a jazz album. As a blues album it is quite unique. But as a musical work of art it is a glorious and genial masterpiece.

RADIOHOP are a four-piece jazz/hip-hop band from Amsterdam, exploring the boundaries between groove, texture and improvisation. The bands members - Joshua Lutz (keys), Euan Jenkins (drums), Johnny Biner (guitar) and Joel Svedberg (bass) - moved to Amsterdam around 2020 to study jazz and quickly plugged into the city's bubbling scene. Each band member plays an equal role in shaping the music as a single organism, emphasising feeling and atmosphere rather than ego or individual spotlight. The compositions arise from experimentation, intuitive collaboration, and deep listening, an approach that has as much to do with their backgrounds as improvisers and beat-makers as it does with their roots in jazz. RADIOHOP have performed as the rhythm section for artists like Soul Supreme and Juju Rogers. HARD TO HANDLE is their second album and the first on Melting Pot Music. As the title suggests, RADIOHOP are going hard on this one.

Vinyl LP pressing. One of three releases marking the 100th birthday of Randy Weston. It features previously unreleased live material. Randy Weston is known to the public thru the lens of the small ensemble of the African Rhythm group, recognition that is very well deserved and his signature around the world. Randy Weston is not only in direct lineage of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, he was also the real integrator of African music into the Jazz World. In 1985 the city of Brooklyn honored Randy with a week-long tribute, culminating in a unique concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) on February 16. For this rare occasion, Randy assembled a dream ensemble - dancers, singers (including Andy Bey), and a big band like no other. The arrangements and conducting were entrusted to none other than Melba Liston - his trusted collaborator and musical sister. Melba, a brilliant trombonist and an even more masterful arranger, transformed Randy's compositions into grand orchestrations that paid tribute to his musical legacy. Mr Bongo presents a reissue of one of the rarest releases on the illustrious and now ultra-rare tax scam label TSG Records. A label with a checkered past, operated by Lloyd Price and with alleged ties to boxing promoter Don King. The album in question, Disco Party by Reality, is a stunning journey through '70s dancefloor-focussed funk into early proto-disco grooves. Back in mid-'70s Manhattan, Dr. Otto Gomez and a group of fellow New York musicians including Tony Dixon, Norman Drayton, Tony Dupree, Al Jones and Fred Nanton were brought in for a recording session by songwriter and producer, Billy Nichols. Laying down one of Nichols' songs and a selection of the group's own, they were paid as session musicians and thought little of it. The tapes came to the attention of Lloyd Price who struck a deal with Nichols unbeknownst to Gomez and the rest of the band. Price then pressed the album and put it out in 1976 on a newly formed subsidiary label, TSG Records, that would later be documented as one of the US tax scam labels of the '70s. Such labels were created to exploit a loophole in the US tax system, running up inflated production costs / losses that investors or the parent label could write off against their tax bills. Releases on these labels were never intended to have commercial success. They would usually be produced in incredibly limited pressing numbers and have little to no promotion or distribution. As such many of these records instantly fell into obscurity, becoming mythical amongst DJs and record collectors. Sadly, this meant that artists like Dr. Otto Gomez and friends never had the chance for their record and their talents to shine at the time. In fact, it was only when Jazzman reached out for their 2022 reissue that Dr. Otto Gomez became aware that the album had ever been released and heard the story behind it.Disco Party is a time capsule where '70s instrumental funk edges and intertwines into an early disco sound. The sessions are for the dancefloor, minimalist and groove-based. The bass and drums are at the forefront, providing the pulse of the album. Driving funky guitar licks, and a brilliant horn section weave their way in and out of the productions. Highlights include the uplifting feel-good 'Let's Party People', the early disco swagger of 'Reality', and 'Disco Party (Let's Have A)' with it's wah-wah groove and percussion break, which could easily have found it's home on a Blaxploitation film soundtrack of the period. It's not just rarity that makes this record so sought after, but rather the fact that it is a superb example of dancefloor-focussed mid '70s funk and disco.

Two worlds, one conversation. On Nuit Parisienne à La Havane, Cuban piano virtuoso Roberto Fonseca and French cellist Vincent Segal capture the magic of a first encounter - no rehearsals, no plan, just pure music. Recorded in Havana over five days, this album is a celebration of spontaneity, friendship, and the art of listening. Here, Paris meets Havana. The warmth of Cuban rhythms embraces the sophistication of French melody; echoes of danzón, chanson, classical and African influences intertwine seamlessly. Every track feels alive: breathing, shimmering, unfolding like a dream that could only happen once.At a time when music is often polished, programed, and overproduced, Fonseca and Segal remind us what happens when you let go of control. This is music that doesn't need to prove anything, it simply is. Deeply human, effortlessly cinematic, Nuit Parisienne à La Havane feels like watching eleven short films through sound: poetic, emotional, and timeless. Whether you're drawn to jazz, world, or classical music (or simply crave something honest and alive), this record will find it's way under your skin. It's an album to return to again and again, always revealing something new.
