Love Forever, our 2025 set of demos from Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon, set collector hearts a-flutter all over the world with it's collection of introspective, folk rock-flavored tunes drawn from her unreleased recordings for Metric Music Publishing. Now, we're one-upping ourselves with Girl of Yesterday-Acoustic Folk Demos, a collection of COMPLETELY UNRELEASED acoustic folk demos from Jackie, taken from the same rich source of material. Folk music came naturally to Jackie. She got her start singing gospel at home and in church as a child in her native Kentucky, and then singing country songs in her teens on her own weekly radio show. And her first, self-titled album for Liberty in 1963 consisted entirely of folk repertoire. But that album only featured folk songs written by other artists. Girl of Yesterday-Acoustic Folk Demos, on the other hand, presents a dozen tunes, all penned by Jackie for an album distributed by Metric in 1964. Accompanied only by her own accomplished fingerpicked acoustic guitar, DeShannon delivered a stunning set of heart-rendingly sung, haunting music imbued with the doubt, confusion, and excitement of finding adult identity. Although grounded in acoustic folk, it looked forward to both folk-rock and the singer-songwriter era in it's lyrical maturity and melodic complexity. Only 500 to 1000 copies were pressed in November 1964, it's availability limited to various A&R personnel and other music industry staff who made decisions with recording artists looking for material. With Girl of Yesterday-Acoustic Folk Demos, this remarkable material finally gains the exposure it deserves. Among the highlights are a couple of songs that were soon covered by famous artists. Certainly the most renowned is "Don't Doubt Yourself, Babe," given a Bo Diddley beat by The Byrds (Jackie was a huge Byrds booster and fan) on their Top Ten 1965 debut album Mr. Tambourine Man, though it was titled "It's Gonna Be All Right" on her far folkier arrangement on the original Metric Music demo LP. And Marianne Faithfull covered the superbly bittersweet "With You in Mind" on her 1967 album Love in a Mist. We also hear the first appearance of "Splendor in the Grass," later a 1966 DeShannon single given backing by The Byrds. Richie Unterberger's notes feature candid recollections from Jackie about the motivations behind the songs and the vibrant, mid-'60s LA scene from which they emerged. Remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision and featuring photos from Jackie's private collection, Girl of Yesterday-Acoustic Folk Demos is available in a beige vinyl edition or on compact disc. A missing and utterly charming chapter in both Jackie's own evolution and the progression of American folk and pop to more sophisticated forms.

John Leventhal, the six-time Grammy-winning songwriter, producer, and guitarist, calls his second record National Drift a “found album.” Without intending to make a record, National Drift is the result of an outpouring of improvisations recorded while Leventhal was producing Rosanne Cash’s upcoming Blue Note release. His first solo recording effort, 2024’s Rumble Strip was described by Texas Monthly as “a masterful debut from a promising new solo artist.”
Leventhal began his career in late 1970s New New York City, playing guitar in dozens of bands including those led by Billy Vera, Steve Forbert, and Levon Helm. In the 1980s he developed a songwriting partnership with Shawn Colvin and produced her 1989 Grammy-winning debut album Steady On. He went on to produce Grammy-winning albums for Rosanne Cash (The List, The River and the Thread), Stax legend William Bell (This Is Where I Live), Colvin’s 1998 Grammy-winning Song of the Year “Sunny Came Home” as well as Sarah Jarosz’s 2020 album World on the Ground. Additional producing credits include Marc Cohn, Jim Lauderdale, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Joan Osborne. As a guitar player he has recorded and performed with Willie Nelson, Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, Bruce Hornsby, Willie Nelson, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Elvis Costello, Donald Fagen and The National. His impulse to look for unexpected moments of beauty has served as a compass and survival tactic throughout his remarkably eclectic career.

On Don't Be Funny Without Me (DBFWM), Le Ren tells us, "I love the man I wanted to be," as a matter of tender fact. She is funny while devastating, self-aware and a little self-deceiving. Across the record, she holds those contradictions close: shameless and ashamed, honest but still searching for a version of the truth that hurts a little less. DBFWM is an album about love, jealousy, and the uneasy ways the two often intertwine. After touring the world opening for artists like Jeff Tweedy, Devendra Banhart and Men I Trust, Le Ren decided to return to Canada to make DBFWM. Recorded in Mountain Grove, Ontario, the album is self-produced alongside old friends Fez Gielen and Jonas Bonetta. Le Ren's lyrics are imbued with that northern endurance, like watching the sunset fade behind the cracked asphalt on avenue du Parc, or from the parking lot of your favourite On Route. Where Leftovers was unadorned, evocative in it's simplicity, DBFWM presents a fuller sound- fiddles, drums, layers of harmony. Powerfully capturing Le Ren's musical evolution, DBFWM is more expansive, more experienced, and more earnest, representing the artist's claim to the fuller, wisened life she has earned.Le Ren's signature angelic vocals are newly complemented by a full band. With driving lead guitar and multiple vocals woven into rich harmony, the record feels like the lovechild of an 80s-era Emmylou Harris and the indignant Gillian Welch of her Time (The Revelator) years. Aching and intoxicating, Don't Be Funny Without Me is a post-breakup road trip with your best friend: no fixed destination, a trunk full of baggage (literal and figurative) and mottled sunlight warming your face through the car window.

Seelie Court - the world's premier label for rare and previously unreleased archive recordings of underground folk, rock, proto-metal, and psychedelic music present Lifeblood - Be Thou My Very Armour. Recorded in the winter of 1971 at Gooseberry Sound Studios, a tiny four-track room tucked away in a Gerrard Street basement, this album captures Lifeblud at a decisive moment. The band had already been together for several years, refining a sound that blended British folk roots with emerging progressive ideas. These recordings present reworked versions of earlier songs alongside more expansive material, shaped by bowed strings, 12-string guitar, Mellotron textures and extended instrumental passages. There's a strong sense of exploration throughout: medieval-tinged melodies sit next to heavier sections, reflective lyrics give way to long, flowing codas, and the playing balances intimacy with ambition. Made during a single long session, the performances retain the rough edges and spontaneity of the time. Half a century on, these tracks stand as a rare document of a band operating just below the surface of the early-70s progressive scene, capturing both their musical identity and the moment before it slipped away. During the pandemic I put together a short set of Music for the IBMA with Phoebe Hunt and Mimi Naja highlighting songs by women. This was an informal example of something I’ve been dreaming of turning into a full length LP.In March 2025 I saw my vision turn into a reality. I co-produced a record with Shani Gandhi of songs that have made their way into the bluegrass canon, and were written by women. Some of these songs I sang for many years before realizing they were penned by a wife/mother/female artist. As a woman, it’s easy to feel like an outsider, or like you don’t belong, in a genre where there is a noticeable lack of representation of women among the forebears. To know that women’s voices made it into the traditional songs feels like a quiet win, and I want to draw more attention to it. Just like having pickers like Molly Tuttle and Sierra Hull out there showing little girls that there is a place for them now in bluegrass, *I want to show where there always has been.* That women’s words and voices made it in there even in the early days. I also feel primed to do this now as a follow up to Queen of Time, which honored my own maternal lineage, namely the spirit my grandmother left with me.
