Hurts Like Hell is Charlotte Cornfield's sixth album, the first she's recorded since the birth of her daughter, an inflection point for her as a person and an artist. The album's recurrent themes of personal growth and renewal, of love's perseverance through difficulty and shame and awkwardness, are rooted there. "That experience has pulled me out of myself and given me a different outlook on things," she says. "The vulnerability and fragility and wildness of it all has made me less focused on self, more zoomed out." Hurts Like Hell is the most open-hearted, full-voiced album of her career, and also her most collaborative. Decamping to Philip Weinrobe's Sugar Mountain studio in Brooklyn, Cornfield was joined by a full backing band, including Palehound's El Kempner, Lake Street Dive's Bridget Kearney, Adam Brisbin, and Sean Mullins, with key contributions by Núria Graham, and Daniel Pencer. Cornfield then recruited Feist, Buck Meek, Christian Lee Hutson and Maia Friedman to sing on the album. The fruits of this process are immediately apparent on lead single "Hurts Like Hell," a country-saturated yearner Cornfield calls "a shy people love story," the band swelling to embrace Cornfield's idiosyncratic flow as if to cradle her protagonist's heart. That the song is so vulnerable, so lived-in, is a matter of trust between Cornfield and her bandmates, in each other and of their gut. Their sound lands somewhere between Nashville Skyline and Harvest; a warm, richly-textured response to her bruised-but-seeking call. Much of Hurts Like Hell's magic happens in the space Cornfield makes for harmony. Taken up by Meek or Hutson, characters are sung into life as if with a brushstroke. When joined by Kempner or Kearney, it's a dazzling facet of the natural, lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry of her band. On "Kitchen," Friedman mirrors Cornfield's sense of astonishment at finding herself in love, rendering the emotion at it's ethereal peak. On "Living With It," she's joined by Feist, who Cornfield connected through a group chat for mothers who are touring musicians. Cornfield has arrived at this album bearing both scars from her past and hope for the future. Standing outside of herself and taking stock of what she wanted her music to be in the wake of childbirth, she was brave enough to ask for space, for time, and for help from places and people familiar and unexpected - a group chat, songwriters she was fans of but wasn't acquainted with, friends whose long-forgotten song leant her the chorus for a new one. Every "yes," every voice memo, every shared file, every open door leading to this moment in Charlotte Cornfield's career. Call that moment what you will - an expansion, a rebirth, a breakthrough - Hurts Like Hell is big enough to meet it and has lost none of Cornfield's charm, wit, or urgency in the offing, at once a reaffirmation of her standing among the great singer-songwriters of her generation and the first articulation of her future, whatever uncertainty and love it may bring.

Danny Kroha’s Detroit Blues could be considered part two of his solo debut LP - Angels Watching Over Me. In his own words, “it was me in a room playing acoustic instruments and doing my own arrangements of some old songs”. Not so fast man!, when you hear this record and dig a little deeper into the facts, you’ll have a heightened awareness of the sonic beauty found in the simplicity. On many of these traditional songs, Danny dropped, added or rearranged verses from various sources, mixing up music from one song and words from another and unintentionally created his own amalgamation of early blues and ‘60s folk. Keep your ears peeled for familiar and wild homemade sounds. There’s a DIY one string washtub bass made out of some kinda bug spray can. There’s a lot of jug bass, blowing the bass notes over the jug opening, frequently heard in early rural American music but also with the 13th Floor Elevators who ran their jug thru an amplifier. The one string guitar, aka The Diddley Bow, on “Come Out Of The Wilderness” is extremely rare, aside from Danny, one of the last times we heard one was on One String Sam's “I Need A Hundred Dollars”. You have your traditional assortment of spoons, jawbones and other percussion instruments, but during one session, Danny and the album supervisor tried out several pairs of Danny's work boots to find the best tone for the foot stomps. We’ll report back soon on what brand was chosen. Instead of following all the rules rooted the early blues and ‘60s folk, Danny Kroha mixed up all the rural and urban traditions and kicked out a new surreal sound that could really only happen in Detroit - “I listen to both genres, for sure. I just wasn’t TRYING to make a record that sounds like that. It just came out that way”.

Dervish is a celebrated Irish traditional folk band from County Sligo, formed in 1989. In two couplets, sung over birdsong and Moss' classical guitar, she manages to capture an entire universe created in the bond between two people. The couplets mirror each other and hang, like a veil, over the rest of the song. Regardless of time, intimacy, love, tenderness, and the way those things can change a person and a relationship, there is, she asserts, an immutable fact to these things: that whatever she learns from them, there will always be something unknowable just beyond.It's a gorgeous song, but this sentiment - that what Moss knows about a lover also reveals what she doesn't know - is, for lack of a better term, a knife, burrowed in the back of beauty, an ache which, for lack of a cure, must be accepted, understood, and lived with. Across the nine songs that make up The Knife, The Needle, this is what Elanor Moss does, rendering joy and pain in exquisite peals of psych-folk, it's darkly-dreamed vignettes offering, if not catharsis, an understanding of the complexity of the journey towards it - healing as a process, rather than an object one obtains.Arriving at The Knife, The Needle was itself a complex journey. Moss found herself adrift from her music, pursuing a sound as opposed to occupying the space she had already cultivated for herself. "Nothing felt right, " she recalls, "so I took the pressure off myself and tried to calibrate my relationship with songwriting and music." The three years she spent writing the songs that make up The Knife, The Needle ultimately found her returning to her roots in and love for, as she puts it, "the music that made me really feel something; the music I wanted to be writing."The Knife, The Needle concerns itself with the way relationships between people are transformed, complicated, and troubled by love. In "Sarah Waiting in the Car" that turn is abuse. In "Fixer" which lends the album it's title, Moss grapples with the fact that love is as capable of harming someone as it is healing them. It's chorus, "Somewhere, deep down / I'm afraid that if you show me the knife / I might use it on you babe" shifts, first to the thought that the "you" Moss addresses the song to may use it on her, then, stunningly, to the knife could be something else entirely: "Maybe what we thought of as a knife / Is just a needle we could use / To stitch the wound?" she asks, offering at last to reveal where she hurts so long as her partner does the same.It's devastating work, a feat of tight lyrical construction that is at once patient and vulnerable, opulently rendered and keenly felt. Remarkably, it and the rest of The Knife, The Needle emerged from a place of restraint, with Moss - staying in a cabin near her parent's house in the Scottish highlands after initially recording an entirely different version of the album in New York City ("a bit rollocking, " she notes) - feeling the pangs of the album she hadn't recorded - "quieter, weirder, more English." Rerecording with a new ensemble and producer/engineer Pete Miles was a risk, but setting aside an already completed project was worth it. In the quieter, weirder, more English sound manifested here, Moss captures something fleeting, ephemeral, and honest about the moments in which love, for good or ill, irrevocably changes someone. Both the knife and the needle named in the album's title are capable of drawing blood, but illuminated by her voice and guitar, what bleeds out from these songs is nothing short of poetry.

Celebrating 20 years of Frank Turner’s solo debut EP ‘Campfire Punkrock’, Xtra Mile Recordings are excited to release a special anniversary extended edition of the seminal release. Featuring the original EP with two added songs (The Real Damage and The Ballad Of Me & My Friends, both of which were included on the US version in 2007), plus 7 further live tracks recorded from Frank’s 50th solo gig in London 2006 - taking listeners right back to where it all began at the very early days of Frank’s incredible solo career. The 12” LP features new reworked artwork with shiny gold campfire on matt black cover plus coloured vinyl. The original EP was recorded by Frank's guitarist Ben Lloyd at the Oxford home of Turner's bass player Tarrant Anderson and mixed by Tristan Ivemy. If features fan favourites ‘Nashville Tennessee’, ‘The Real Damage’ and ‘Ballad Of Me And My Friends’.
