Burning Song, composer and organist Kali Malone's first new album since 2024's All Life Long, represents a transformation in her compositional strategy towards a process that is intuitive and direct. The album was recorded at the historic Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Germany, where J.S. Bach was cantor for the last 27 years of his life; his body rests beneath the sanctuary. Malone is the first musician to perform contemporary works on the church's Bach Organ, an instrument completed in 2000 but with bespoke tuning and temperament systems based on historical norms of the baroque period. She is joined by Lucy Railton on cello and Stephen O'Malley on bowed acoustic guitar, the same trio that honed a profound connection based on deep listening through the development of Malone's work Does Spring Hide It's Joy. Chord follows chord, each in slow succession, emerging like stones of various shades and shapes on a winding path. The trio moves as one, stepwise, through passages that are alternately ambiguous and radiant, at times triumphant as the tones rise towards the organ's upper register.The first half of Burning Song was commissioned for the 2023 Venice Music Biennale and presented at the remarkably ornate San Pietro di Castello. Initial seeds of these pieces were developed on a piano backstage at Bozar in Brussels following a solo electronic performance, long after the audience and staff had departed. The album's final three pieces were composed swiftly in the month preceding the recording session in 2025, their stately progressions emerging within her mind's ear with a sense of ease and inevitability, hovering in the moment just before understanding, where revelation lives. The album's final piece, "My Eve My Dawn," represents a clear vision of this process; foregrounding the cohesion between endings and beginnings, it moves through passages of sadness and joy, the linking tones offering a sense of continuity, and thus of acceptance. Geoff Kirkwood (Man Power)I'd gained some notoriety as a music producer and DJ but I hit a horrible case of writers block around 2018. Later, in the middle of lockdown, I was emboldened enough to apply for an artist in residence position at a big regional opera house. I submitted a ridiculously ambitious plan for what I would like to do as a project, and to my absolute shock I was selected for the position. I got as far as suggesting writing a full symphony to be performed by an orchestra. The biggest issue for me, beyond raising the money to pay for everything, was how does a person actually write a symphony?I was introduced to Fiona Brice, a multi instrumentalist and orchestral arranger. She's also a recording artist who releases on Bella Union. On top of that, she's a violinist who used to be part of the band Placebo and who used to appear regularly playing for other bands on things like Top of the Pops. Not only was Fiona uniquely placed to not look down on the strange provenance of someone from an acid house background wanting to write a symphony, but more to the point we really hit it off from day one. Fiona coached me in the essentials of writing for an orchestra, and then I went off and wrote the 8 movements.I'd love to say I labored for years over this bit, but it took about 2 weeks in total. I'd also love to say what I wrote was a complete symphony, but the version of this which is solely me feels like looking at something without your glasses on. The shape, feel, and borders were all there, but the definition was absent. Fiona taught me the broad language of a symphony, but without her it would have lacked all intonation, nuance, and detail. Where I had shaped ideas with a hammer, she brought out my meaning with precision using a scalpel. I think the prodigiously quick turnaround for the music is as much proof of how conceptually and musically aligned Fiona and I are. I know we're both incredibly proud of what we've created.The work itself is inspired by the working class experience, but it's also a comment on how we get to decide what we are and how we're defined, and we get to choose what we do to prove these things. The original recording was contractually impossible to ever share again, so we re-recorded it. Light casts shadows, of course, and logics of shadowing, mirroring, and distorted reflection—of key importance for Reidy’s work as a whole—inform the sumptuous surfaces of Clerestory.‘Shadow Symmetric’ is a string quartet commissioned and performed by the JACK Quartet as part of their JACK Studio program. Reidy’s pairing with the quartet is felicitous: JACK are one of the preeminent new music ensembles working today, with a particular interest in just intonation, an important component of Reidy’s music. The piece’s gentle pacing and constrained dynamic range invites us to become immersed in its language of static resonance, complex beating tones, and subtle harmonic surprise. Per il Luigi is the 17th volume of the complete Haydn 2032 collection and presents a number of Haydn's earliest symphonies; these had been composed to display the talent of the musicians who had joined the Esterhazy court orchestra during the same period as Haydn himself. The centre of the programme is the Symphony No. 13 in D major from 1763, whose orchestration includes four horns and whose final movement features a prefiguration of the famous theme of Mozart's 'Jupiter' symphony, to be composed twenty-five years later. The Violin Concerto in C major is marked fatto per il Luigi in Haydn's catalogue of works and was dedicated to Luigi Tomasini (1741-1808), a violin virtuoso born in Pesaro and a friend of Haydn. Sir Stephen Hough's new solo piano album, Stephen Hough's Piano Postcards, explores the world from the perspective of the itinerant pianist sending home musical messages from his voyages. Music from Asia includes ""Spring breeze prelude"" by Taiwanese composer Deng Yu-Hsien and a piano version of ""Aka tombo,"" a children's song so beloved in Japan that it features in citywide ""5-o'clock chimes"" across the country. Folk and popular traditions appear in ""Cielito lindo"" and ""Nature boy,"" while the final group of pieces turns to nature, with works by MacDowell, Schumann and Sinding. Alongside these musical travel diaries, he intersperses new transcriptions of songs from popular films, including arrangements he created for Lang Lang's 'Disney Book' album.
