Blind Willie McTell was an anomaly. There are only a handful of artists who can match his total command of rural traditionalmusic. He sang and composed or preserved some of the most inventive, compelling, and beautiful traditional songs, bluesand arrangements of all time. His voice did not have great range, but it conveyed something even better: warmth and conviction. His rags and comedic pieces don't just have an infectious bounce, they usually have McTell making spoken asidesto the audience, commenting on and sharing the performance and drawing them in. He utilizes this facility in his seriouspieces, also, while projecting an appropriate emotional affect. He was a brilliant guitarist, adept at several different styles, occasionally recasting a few favorite arrangements into new-sounding pieces. McTell could make his guitar "talk" in theproverbial sense of the term; more than that, he was able to craft superb arrangements that underpinned his emotionalpersona.

Vinyl LP pressing. There are perhaps few characters in the history of popular music who were as mysterious, as they were brazen than Aleck Ford, AKA Sonny Boy Williamson II. The true story of Sonny Boy Williamson II remains shrouded in mystery and uncertainty, and it seems this was Ford's intention, but to what ends, nobody can say. One thing is certain though - he was one of the all-time greats of the harmonica, a bone fide bluesman, talented and charismatic in equal measure. His influence cannot be overstated. The first incarnation of the band that would become the Rolling Stones was named after him: Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys; B.B King described him as "the King of the harmonica"; and maybe there would have been no Howlin' Wolf, or Elmore James without Williamson's mentorship and support. The British Blues explosion of the late 1960s certainly owed much to Williamson and his compatriots. This carefully curated collection of this colourful and charismatic performer's work showcases just why he was one of the true legends of blues music. Interestingly, he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980, the same year as Sonny Boy Williamson I. It seems fitting that even in death and in honours they were inextricably linked. This collection hones in on his work that took the world by storm during his tenure with Trumpet and Checker in the 1950's and early 60's from his iconic "Eyesight For The Blind" through to "One Way Out". It is a true celebration of one of the most mysterious characters in music.

Eric Gales is a blues firebrand. Over 30 years and 18 albums, his passion for the music and his boundless desire to keep it vital has never waned, even when his own light dimmed due to his substance struggles. Throughout it all, he continued to reinvigorate the art form with personal revelation in his lyrics and bold stylistic twists in his guitar playing and songwriting. Five years sober, creatively rejuvenated, and sagely insightful, Eric is ready for the fight of his career. Aptly, he calls his masterful new album, 'Crown', out January 28th, 2022, on Provogue/Mascot label Group. Here, Eric opens like never before, sharing his struggles with substance abuse, his hopes about a new era of sobriety and unbridled creativity, and his personal reflections on racism. The songs are delivered with clarity and feature Eric's personal experiences and hope for positive change. In addition, the 16-track collection boasts his finest singing, songwriting, and his signature guitar playing that burns throughout. Produced by Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith, this is Eric at his most boldly vulnerable, uncompromisingly political, and unflinchingly confident. The 'Crown' album journey is exhilarating, and, much like Eric's life, winds through moments of victory and vulnera-bility. Along the way, Eric shares his story and his feelings through the majesty of the blues. He says: "When I play, the core is always the blues, and on this album, we go through a theme park of the blues, exploring all kinds of blues. We visit the carousel, the bumper cars, the water rides, the concession stands, and we all come out with smiles."

Lightnin' Hopkins (1912-1982) was a country bluesman of the highest caliber whose career began in the 1920s and stretched all the way into the 1980s. One of the most influential blues guitarists to come out of the state of Texas, Hopkins' unique fingerpicking guitar style would alternate single-note leads with rhythm and bass guitar, adding percussive elements by slapping or tapping the body of his guitar. The Rooster Crowed in England was recorded in 1959, a few years before Hopkins' first trip across the Atlantic. His first London trip would take place as part of the 1964 International American Folk Blues Festival. THE COMPLETE ALBUM + 2 BONUS TRACKS - 180-GRAM VIRGIN VINYL - LIMITED EDITION

One of the more defining features of Blues upstarts GA-20's approach to traditional Blues music is their unwavering dedication to playing the songs they love, or as bandleader Matthew Stubbs puts it, "we play the music we would want to hear." Those in the know have been captivated by the visceral energy the band brings to the heavy Blues arena, and the songs they choose to perform. With ORPHANS, the band has assembled a collection of Blues and Blues- adjacent tracks that fit handily within that parameter. The songs found on ORPHANS are just that - singular tunes heard only at live shows, singles released between albums, and simple favorites that the band (Stubbs, Cody Nilsen & Josh Kiggans) have been itching to lay down. And just as Blues is a tradition of borrowing, sharing and transformation, these melodies and words are similarly reinterpreted and reimagined, orphans and strays lovingly adopted and given new breath. The fan demand for a proper full length release of these songs, along with the mandate to showcase Nilsen's vocals and auxiliary guitar mastery, are realized here in physical form.

The fan demand for a proper full length release of these songs, along with the mandate to showcase Nilsen's vocals and auxiliary guitar mastery, are realized here in physical form.

Vinyl LP pressing. The life and career of Billie Holiday was underscored by triumphs and tragedies. One of the greatest artists of her generation, no-one conveys deep emotion better than 'Lady Day'. Hers was a new jazz voice, influenced by jazz instrumentalists, with it's ability to manipulate tempo and phrasing in bold and enthralling ways. The great Frank Sinatra was both a friend and a fan of her music. He said of her in 1958, "With few exceptions, every major pop singer in the U.S. during her generation has been touched in some way by her genius. It is Billie who was, and still remains, the greatest single musical influence on me." In fact, her legacy carries across the generations, with artists such as Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, and Amy Winehouse citing her as an influence. This collection traces an important six years of her early recording career which built the platform for the huge commercial success she enjoyed during the mid to late 40s, before she began to succumb to the lifestyle which eventually destroyed her. It features iconic and beautifully harrowing recordings such as "Summertime", "Strange Fruit" Night & Day", "God Bless The Child" and "Solitude", demonstrating her unique and unmistakable way of interpreting the songs. It is a fascinating and beguiling musical journey.

Down in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Atlantic Records' Jerry Wexler had fallen out with Rick Hall at FAME studio after an Aretha Franklin session ended with Aretha storming back to New York. Wexler later set up the Muscle Shoals session guys in their own studio, Muscle Shoals Sound. Furious at the betrayal, Hall went to see Atlantic's arch-rival, Chess Records, and persuaded Leonard Chess to bring his top Soul acts to FAME. Between August and December 1967, Chess's Etta James, recorded her greatest album, TELL MAMA, at FAME. Etta's career had faltered, and it took the Muscle Shoals sessions to bring her back. The LP's title song, Tell Mama, as well as Otis Redding's Security became Top 40 hits and Top 20 R&B hits for Etta. It was the B-side of Tell Mama that would become the LP's enduring track, though. I'd Rather Go Blind was written by Etta's friend, Fugi Foster, who handed it to her when she went to see him in prison. Although never a charted hit for Etta, this is the original version of a song that has been recorded hundreds of times by artists as diverse as Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart, Paolo Nutini, Mick Hucknall, and the Allman Brothers. Recognized today as one of the greatest Soul LPs of all time, TELL MAMA hasn't been available on vinyl for more than forty years. Now it's back, lovingly transferred and remastered, and pressed on 180g vinyl.

Sonny Landreth's album Bound By The Blues marks a return to the slide guitarist's musical roots. It presents a bold, big-sounding collection of recordings. That climb to stratospheric heights of jazz informed improvisation, the best of classic rock, and inevitably remain deeply attached to the elemental emotional and compositional structures that are at the blues' historic core. Bound by the blues is a powerful tribute to the durability and flexibility of the genre, and to his own creative vision.Sonny name-checks Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters and some of Landreth's other musical heroes along the way. He also pays homage to fellow slide guitarist Johnny Winter, with the instrumental "Firebird Blues." He recreates some amazing covers "Walkin' Blues" by Robert Johnson, and "Dust My Broom" by Elmore James.Landreth continues to develop his vision and his musical voice, growing increasingly original and distinctively diverse sounds expanding from blues, zydeco, folk, country and jazz, making Bound By The Blues one of his most ambitious albums to date.
