Heather Nova releases her new album, “The Orchard,” on V2 Records in October 2026. The Orchard is a beautiful collection of songs; strong in melody and rich in poetic imagery, that dives deep emotionally. But the overriding feeling on this album is one of hope and light and possibility—just what we need in these troubled times.
The album was recorded in London over the course of 6 weeks last winter with producer Tim Bran, known for the sound he’d gotten with HAEVN and London Grammar. Predominantly made with just Tim and Heather throwing ideas back and forth, the production is authentic and natural but also contemporary.

After over two decades shaping the modern soul, funk, and rare groove scene from behind the scenes, Jeff Silverman-better known as J. Dynamite-is stepping forward with a vision his own: The Powers That Be. This album marks a new chapter for an artist whose fingerprints have been all over the modern soul and funk landscape. As co-founder of Truth & Soul Records, Dynamite was instrumental in the New York soul revival that grew from Desco, Soul Fire, Truth & Soul, and Daptone Records. He became a producer on Aloe Blacc's Good Things album and later brought his ear for groove and atmosphere to video-game music as a soundtrack producer for Rockstar Games on GTA V and RDR 2.With The Powers That Be, J. Dynamite reunites with many of the musicians who helped define the funk and soul resurgence. The album features Grammy-winning bassist Nick Movshon, with credits including T&S productions, Aloe Blacc's "I Need a Dollar" and Amy Winehouse's Back to Black; Stuart Bogie (Antibalas, TV on the Radio, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings) on flute and saxophone; guitarist Luke O'Malley (Antibalas, The Roots); keyboardist Jake Pinto (Magic City Hippies); Miles Francis (Antibalas, EMEFE) on drums; vibraphonist Angelo Outlaw; Grammy-winning Latin percussionist Reinaldo DeJesus; Vincent John (Eraserhood Sound); and a cast of longtime collaborators.Despite the history of the musicians involved, The Powers That Be is deliberately not a nostalgia trip. Dynamite turns the accumulated experience of a long career into something immediate, personal, and forward-looking. The album is not a retrospective but a chance to hear what happens when a producer with decades of musical history finally puts his own name at the center of the record. For longtime followers, it marks the return of a producer whose influence can be traced through much of the soul and funk renaissance of the last twenty-five years. For everyone else, it is an introduction to an artist who has spent decades shaping the conversation and is finally telling his own story. After five years of silence and meticulous work Dungeon Serpent returns with their second album Lamentations of the Shadowkingdoms. Having already constructed a standout style of death metal with World of Sorrows sharply focused upon fusing morbid and romantic strains of extreme metal from before metal's turn-of-the-century involution, Dungeon Serpent now boldly looks to a future of their own creation and stretches their limbs to new horizons, breathing new life into the ruined world presented in the first album. Thus this new album is a work of grand ambition and unbowed passion, not content to merely fine-tune and repeat what has already been done in a bygone age. Yet with this expansion, Lamentations of the Shadowkingdoms presents a work united as a great whole. Each of the six pieces are tonally distinct but thematically bound and flow into a monolithic singular entity. This vision is executed with greater clarity, enhanced skill, focus and the addition of new members to the horde, such as drummer Bhraonáin (Fake Dust). The music is now played with a speed and ferocity well beyond what was achieved on the first album, and the technique of the core instrumentation is more eclectic, drawing more freely from black metal, brutal death metal, and even as far as jazz and grind, as well as a sharper mix courtesy of Subterranean Watchtower Studios that allows elements such as agile basslines to be heard with much more clarity. The music cleanly flows between this ferocity and an almost cosmic sense of orchestral grandiosity, owing to the expanded instrumentation within the songs, chiefly mystical keyboards in the Hellenic tradition and violins provided by string player and contemporary composer Anju Singh (The Nausea), as well as many other adventurous atmospheric and textural flourishes. Lamentations of the Shadowkingdoms is a work that expresses both the untempered rawness and ferocity but also the latent musical potential within the truest essence of death metal in one breath, realized and entwined as extensions of one and the same principle.

Dark Entries is Elbow Deep in the Hoopla thanks to J.D. Slater. Legendary actor, director, and composer J.D. Slater is sometimes known as "the Lou Reed of gay porn." Slater cut his teeth in the New York punk scene, even opening for the Talking Heads and Blondie at CBGB with his project Frenzy. A true polymath of the erotic, he co-founded Raging Stallion Studios with Chris Ward in 1999, which has remained a prolific outlet in the world of gay pornography. Elbow Deep collects the scores from three late 1990s fisting-focused Club Inferno films: At Arm's Length, Hand Over Fist, and Heads or Tails. Never before released, these works show Slater digging deeper into the electronic music production techniques that were blossoming in that era, like loop-based sampling. Says Slater, "Suddenly I could have access to every instrument in the world. My whole concept of sound and structure evolved with the technology." The works here are trance-inducing groovers, laced with acid and dosed with brooding ambience. Check out the Gregorian vibes on "Grand Fuck," the legato lurch of "Stallion Funk," or the frosty atmospheres of "At Arm's Length." Elbow Deep in the Hoopla comes with an insert featuring an interview with J.D. Slater. Starkly sexy, these tracks remind us of Slater's creed: "The main rule for writing a porn score is to remember what you are writing for." Songs of Joy and Peace is a Christmas music album by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, originally released in 2008. The album features collaborations with many other artists, including vocalists Diana Krall & Alison Krauss, James Taylor, Dave Brubeck, Chris Botti. This holiday disc doesn't exclusively stick to traditional Christmas songs, but covers a wide scope of material in a very ambitious manner. Ma opens with a lovely take of the traditional favorite "Dona Nobis Pacem (Give Us Peace)", playing both the melody and counterpoint via overdubbing. Jazz pianist/vocalist Diana Krall is superb in a swinging rendition of Jerome Kern's unjustly obscure "You Couldn't Be Cuter", adding bassist John Clayton. An arrangement of "Joy To The World" features pianist Dave Brubeck and cellist Matt Brubeck (his son). Chris Botti has never sounded better in the warm arrangement of "My Favorite Things", playing both open and muted trumpet. James Taylor is featured on vocals on the Beatles cover "Here Comes The Sun". Songs of Joy & Peace is a limited edition on translucent red colored vinyl and includes a 4-page booklet. "Subtle and over the top at the same time" is an apt description of Iroiro's astonishing debut album, Iroiro [GU002/KLP127]. It only took a few gigs for Iroiro to establish themselves as Seattle's most exciting rock group. This may surprise fans of IQU, the '90s K recording artist whose Michiko Swiggs and Kento Oiwa form Iroiro's creative core. IQU combined samples and live instrumentation to put playful spins on trip-hop, drum & bass, and synth-pop, Iroiro produce extended, vocal-free jams that blossom into powerful psychedelic rock. You can hear the band's rapid, splendid evolution on their self-titled debut album, recorded in the '70s room at Avast! With Stuart Hallerman. In the disbanding of synth sorceress Swiggs and drummer Justin Schwartz's electronic unit Zazaz, they asked Oiwa to join them in a new project. They assembled for Friday night sessions at which the trio combined Zazaz's "man-machine methods" and spontaneous noise excursions. James Drage joined the sessions and his effected bass sounds were, says Swiggs, "amazing and otherworldly. He was the perfect piece that we were missing in the band."The resulting album will convince you that rock still has ingenuity to burn.Iroiro's six songs gain intensity as they progress. The loping, chiming rock of "Once" morphs into an elegantly distorted whorl. "Formosa" boasts arena-rock swagger tempered by artfully noisy, psychedelic sensibilities and a wistful tunefulness. An easygoing chugger with a winsome melody and Theremin melisma, "Nanashi" is suffused with a gentle euphoria that eventually gets subsumed by tumult. "I Didn't I Will" has the feeling of an inexorable ascent toward enlightenment. "Cool Man Sicks" has a similar processional motion, but is more understated and metronomic. Inspired by a New Mexico mountain Kento visited, "Sandia" starts like a soulful, meditation before exploding into towers of fizzing guitars, then returning to calm.
