Mike Reed's Separatist Party sophomore effort and Thrill Jockey debut Sing the Color Blue is a recording assembled over numerous sessions, and a testament to persistence and transformation. The album reunites Mike Reed with Rob Frye, Cooper Crain, Dan Quinlivan (all of the trio Bitchin Bajas), Marvin Tate, and Ben LaMar Gay in a set that moves between composition, reconstruction, improvisation, and song form. Part of what gives Sing the Color Blue it's character is the unusual length and shape of it's creation. Elements of the album reach back across nearly a decade, starting in January 2022 at Constellation in Chicago and the majority of the recording completed between November 2023 and April 2024 at Electrical Audio. The record unfolded gradually, with Reed returning to the material repeatedly until the album's final structure revealed itself. Reed reassembled fragments of Tate's words and performances into new lyrical structures, often changing their original meaning completely. The results are a record where authorship feels layered rather than singular: songs emerge from live interaction, archival excavation, editing, rearrangement, and re-composition at once. The title Sing the Color Blue also reflects that spirit of transformation. Reed has said the phrase grew partly out of a friend's critique of his nearly all-blue wardrobe and his longstanding attraction to Bauhaus aesthetics. He was also struck by a phrase from a documentary in which a historian described people being instructed to ""dance the color blue."" Reed reshaped that line into Sing the Color Blue, a title that suggests synesthesia, instruction, abstraction, and also a subtle relation to the blues and to Chicago's musical history. In that sense, the title names the album's larger purpose: turning mood into form, color into sound, and fragments of lived time into music.

Part songwriter, part street photographer, Josh Rouse steps out on his new album as an itinerant documentarian capturing the drifters, dreamers, and passing strangers who slip in and out of our lives, and finding himself somewhere in the frame too. Museums and Women is Rouse at his most hopeful and romantic, balancing casual poetry with wry humor across a collection of characters who are searching but never desperate, longing but never lonely.Recorded in Nashville with longtime production partner Brad Jones (Chuck Prophet, Hayes Carll), the album came together almost by accident resulting in loose, unplanned studio sessions with Rouse on guitar, Jones on bass, and Fred Eltringham (Sheryl Crow, The Chicks) on drums, cut live and fresh, morning sessions followed by same-day overdubs. The title itself borrows from a John Updike book Rouse has always loved, and it fits: these songs treat ordinary human connection and it's absence like gallery-worthy art. From the jangly optimism of opener ""Spring"" to the bossa nova drift of ""Sunday In The Country"" to the rain-soaked wandering of ""Parnell Street,"" Rouse's narrators move through the world in transit but never lost, mapping the space between the people we long for and the people we become. ""There's always a woman involved,"" Rouse says. ""Love - or the search for it - is what ties them all together.""It's a fitting return for an artist NPR has called one of contemporary music's most engaging singer-songwriters, whose career spans from his celebrated 1998 debut Dressed Up Like Nebraska through the Goya Award-winning ""Do You Really Want To Be In Love."" Nearly three decades in, Rouse sounds unburdened and unhurried, chasing nothing but the joy of the work itself. Museums and Women is proof that the most compelling art is often found in life's quietest, most passing moments.

Having worked with the likes of Alex G, Tinashe, Mitski, and countless others over a 15-year span, Ryan Hemsworth has developed an uncanny ear for talent while simultaneously honing his craft as a shapeshifting producer comfortable in any genre setting. Although known for his prolific output and seemingly endless high-profile collaborations, Numbskull is Hemsworth's first solo album since 2018's Elsewhere, and his first for Topshelf Records. On Numbskull, Hemsworth squares a tangled mix of influences ranging from shoegaze to lo-fi to metal, all squeezed through the lens of his globe-trotting pop background. Hemsworth embraces these heavy, distorted influences on the blown-out lead single ""One Step,"" a blaring foundation for the boisterous vocal performance delivered by Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties.Hemsworth's links to the hardcore scene have grown over the years, leading him to Ian Shelton of Militarie Gun, who introduced Hemsworth to MSPAINT's Dylan Kern, whose raw and raucous vocal feature for ""No One Else"" calls to mind the Beastie Boys in a song that feels spiritually indebted to video game menu music. But the Canadian producer explores his heavier influences through more than just electronic pop on Numbskull. Take ""Never Learned"" featuring Tegan and Sara, the album's twist and midway anchor point. It's an unexpected jolt of huge guitar and blast beats, with Hemsworth playing the role of rock bandleader in an urgent, infectious emo anthem about succumbing to who you really are.

Los Angeles-born rapper, producer, professional skateboarder, and multidisciplinary artist Navy Blue (Sage Elsesser) shares The Sword & The Soaring. The 15-track body of work marks a new era of introspection, faith, and mastery for the artist, following his acclaimed 2024 release Memoirs in Armour. Across the record, Navy Blue navigates the balance between discipline and surrender, shadow and transcendence. The title reflects duality - "The Sword" as the symbol of endurance and "The Soaring" as the embodiment of grace.Produced by Child Actor, Chris Keys, Gray Matter, Demahjiae, Foisey, Shungu, Malik, akabluesky, Animoss, Sebb Bash, Mejiwahn, and Navy Blue himself, the project continues Sage's signature blend of meditative lyricism and warm, sample-driven production. The album's centerpiece, "24 Gospel," reunites him with longtime collaborator Earl Sweatshirt, their synergy capturing the spirit of creative brotherhood that runs throughout the record.

Beginning in 1989 as the rhythm section for Gerry Mulligan, the trio of pianist Bill Mays, bassist Dean Johnson and drummer Ron Vincent have since made beautiful music together with countless other artists and as the long-lived Bill Mays Trio. With ""Ray's Hat Trick,"" Vincent looked to this collective to provide the musical foundation for his debut as a bandleader. Originally conceived as a quartet album with Steve Cardenas joining them on guitar, the palette expanded quickly as he heard different voices filtering in, so he pulled in longtime saxophonist friends Dave Brandom, Tim Armacost and Matt Garrison to add multiple woodwinds to the sound. With originals from Vincent, Mays & Cardenas to go along with arrangements of tunes by Ellington, Duke Pearson, and Denzil Best, Ron Vincent creates a joyfully swinging collection of music. Matthew Martin stands among Britain's leading composers for choir and organ. Performed by The Choir of Canterbury Cathedral under David Newsholme, with Jamie Rogers at the organ recently rebuilt by Harrison & Harrison, this programme reflects Martin's close association with Canterbury. The album spans the jubilant Psalm 150, first heard in Manchester, and the direct, concentrated writing of the Coventry Missa brevis, to the stillness of Ave verum and the dramatic narrative of When David heard. An Evensong sequence reveals Martin's instinct for liturgical form, while the organ work concludes the collection with clarity and purpose.Several pieces are recorded here for the first time, offering a focused survey of a distinctive contemporary voice. Australia's Windwaker are swinging for the fences with their new album (and third with Fearless Records) 'smile, you're on camera' and lead single "closer." The track is about arriving at a crossroads and deciding whether to give up and pursue normalcy or keep going and fight the good fight; it's an existential battle that most of us face and Windwaker effectively sets it to a post-industrial, alt-metal anthem. The lyrical "Do I or don't I" is matched by the song's push and pull intensity. Alternately smooth and glitchy verses are folded into stadium-ready choruses and breakdowns so deep they could cause an oceanic earthquake. The album and track are indicative of one thing: Windwaker have arrived.

On their fourth album, Balance, Boston's Pet Fox take a hefty and defined leap forward, presenting a deeply personal and sonically expansive new album that marks a significant evolution for the band. Recorded over the course of seven days at Asheville's renowned Drop of Sun Studios, the band worked with producer Alex Farrar (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman, Squirrel Flower) to capture the core of their sound at it's most confident, pairing the intricate and melodic songwriting that has underpinned somuch of their work to-date with an organic, live-band energy that bristles with tension. Citing artists such as Pinback, Autolux, and Alex G as inspirations on their sound, Pet Fox has long occupied a distinctive corner of indie rock, blending textured guitars, understated hooks and emotional nuance. Balance certainly covers similar ground, building on that foundation while opening a new creative chapter, one that offers up the band's first fully studio-produced album after years of largely self-producing.

There's no backing off or backing down on Swimmin' Time, the duo's highly anticipated sophomore set as Shovels & Rope, an album that brims with the confidence, energy and sinew of a band that's accustomed to treating their career as a marathon, rather than a sprint. The album, recorded at the studio Michael Trent constructed in the couple's home, finds them cutting a new path through the sonic thickets they navigated so nimbly on their breakthrough bow, O' Be Joyful - a disc that won rave reviews from outlets like Mojo (which called it "thrilling") and Filter, which said "[they] were solid singer-songwriters on their own, but this is truly a thing of magic."

There are albums you listen to... and then there are albums you experience. Spiritual Wasteland falls firmly into the second category. Originally released in 1998 on Thunderload Records, this third album from Sweden's Veni Domine stands as one of the most unique and thought-provoking entries in Christian metal. Moving beyond the epic doom foundation of their earlier work, the band leans heavily into progressive structures, atmospheric depth, and haunting keyboard-driven soundscapes-creating a record that is as introspective as it is heavy. This is progressive doomy power metal with purpose. The pacing is deliberate. The compositions unfold patiently. And the reward is a deeply immersive listening experience that reveals more with each spin. At the center of it all is vocalist Fredrik Ohlsson, delivering a powerful and dynamic performance that shifts from soaring highs to somber, reflective passages. Meanwhile, the band constructs a rich sonic landscape where guitars, bass, drums, and keys work together-not for flash, but for mood, tension, and emotional weight. Lyrically, Spiritual Wasteland explores philosophical and apocalyptic themes, painting a bleak yet compelling picture of a world in decline-while wrestling with faith, meaning, and the human condition. It's a thinking person's album, designed for listeners who want more than surface-level metal. Remastered by Rob Colwell and presented here as part of the Metal Icon Series, this long-overdue reissue finally gives the album the clarity and depth it deserves-housed in a collector-worthy package (16-page booklet with a jewel case) with updated artwork by Scott Waters (NLTM). This is not background music. This is an album to sit with-preferably late at night, lights low, and distractions gone. Among the most influential hip-hop artists to emerge in the rapid creative expansion of the early 1990s, Queens duo Organized Konfusion helped reshape rap's aesthetic horizons with the 1991 release of a groundbreaking self-titled album. A dizzying display of lyrical dexterity and forward-thinking production, ""Organized Konfusion"" helped lay the foundation for what would become known as underground hip-hop, introducing the intricate wordplay and cerebral rhyme structures that continue to inspire generations of emcees. Both Pharoahe Monch and Prince Po shine throughout the album, revealing the immense talent that would later establish Monch as one of hip-hop's most revered voices and spark Po's collaborations with producers like Danger Mouse, Madlib, Large Professor, Oh No, and more. Moving e?ortlessly between playful nostalgia, sharp social commentary, and surreal linguistic explorations, the duo navigates chaotic drum breaks with dense rhyme patterns, vivid imagery, and ever-shifting narratives. After decades of limited availability and countless unofficial bootlegs, this is the first official vinyl reissue of ""Organized Konfusion"" since it's 1991 release. Featuring three rare bonus tracks, this 35th anniversary edition is available on 2LP, CD, and cassette, giving a long-overdue spotlight to one of hip-hop's most important albums.

Fishtailing across a trimmed sod lawn, the parking lot of a box-store strip mall, a fast food drive-thru-it's a hyperreal Americana fantasy that calls Caroline Rose (she/they) home on 'Gentling the Horse at the Walt Whitman Mall'. The release doubles as the debut of SUCK records, the LA based artist's own imprint-a fitting next form for an enigmatic musician whose work resists settling into one shape.'Gentling the Horse at the Walt Whitman Mall' stretches the ordinary into the uncanny. The record pairs sharply observed, memoiristic songwriting with expansive guitar textures that render the everyday with violent clarity and mythic scale. Beneath it's melodic sweep and signature hooks runs a current of violence and American dream leakage. It's Ennio Morricone with an AR15: surf guitars, spaghetti westerns, and suburban dread colliding until they become their own sharp vernacular. Reality is unstable, so we'll keep telling stories-and for Rose, the sinister slickness of the everyday grows a new head.Working with producer John Congleton, Rose built the record through humor, layering, and instinct rather than Polish. Songs like ""Conversations with Shiv,"" ""Goddamn Train,"" and ""Everything in it's Right Place"" were recorded in studio for the first time, with sessions that prized first impulses over perfection. The result is panoramic but never precious-songs that feel meticulously constructed while always threatening to mutate. Over the last six years, Rose's music has evolved alongside their work organizing around stronger labor protections and collective bargaining rights for musicians and crews. Creative and political practice have increasingly become the same project as Rose's career has taken on it's hyper-independent form. Those concerns echo throughout 'Gentling the Horse'. It's landscapes are populated by inherited systems that feel absurd yet inescapable, where humor becomes a survival tactic and satire reveals the quiet violence embedded in everyday American life.

Fearlessly inventive, Berlin 'psych-disco' trio Zoon Phonanta's 2nd album is an eclectic adventure that fuses the seemingly disparate into one easy ride. The lo-fi intro's a perplexing trap that soon gives way to The B-52's meets King Gizzard of Mantra Man, which resurrects legendary Berlin artpunk duo Cobra Killer on vocals. Then to the darkly Jaki Liebzeit-esque rhythm and Welsh-language sloganeering of Dim Diolch; to the hooky experimental synthpop of Run For Your Money (featuring Gemma Ray); to the hipshaking post-punk diss track that is Badcats (featuring the gothic Irish croon of A.S. Fanning); and to the hook-laden pulsing electro-noise disco monster that is main single Love In Entropy. This audacious album refuses to settle down. And without a guitar a sight! This new MarchVivo release presents a live recording of the concert given by the Albeniz Jazz Quartet at the Fundacion Juan March on 10 June 2026. The project explores how the piano music of a classical composer such as Isaac Albeniz can inspire the transformation of his music into a jazz idiom. Albeniz opened new horizons for the piano in the 20th century through his refined and visionary writing, just as this recording reveals a previously unexplored dimension of his music. The chosen pieces, conceived as soundscapes of an imagined Spain, are reinterpreted here with rhythmic freedom and new harmonies for a jazz quartet, offering a fresh perspective on this classical repertoire with it's unmistakable Spanish stamp, transformed by the sonic palette of contemporary jazz. Now available on Limited Edition Green Swirl Vinyl. Robbie Fulks's adventurous spirit has defined a critically acclaimed 30-year career spanning 16 solo albums and two GRAMMY® nominations. He first came to national attention as a defining voice of the alt-country scene in the 1990s, with releases on Bloodshot, Yep Roc, and Geffen Records. Though his aversion to genre conventions has always made him difficult to pigeonhole, American country music - in the widest sense - is his home base, whether the country of Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, Merle Haggard, or Mississippi John Hurt. While bluegrass has always been part of Fulks's musical vision, Bluegrass Vacation marks his first purely bluegrass endeavor. Paired with an extraordinary cast - Sam Bush, Sierra Hull, Ronnie McCoury, Tim O'Brien, Alison Brown, John Cowan, and Jerry Douglas - the result is one of the most remarkable bluegrass albums of the century. As Fulks puts it: ""Electric guitars might give way to computers, as seems to be happening now, but the mountains will still be right there."" It's abundantly clear that Bluegrass Vacation is far more than a musical detour - he owns this music as much as it owns him.

Toronto pianist and composer Thompson Egbo-Egbo offers a richly cinematic session on Just A Thought, built around the deep chemistry of his longtime trio with drummer Jeff Halischuk and bassist Randall Hall. Two searching originals sit alongside thoughtful reworkings of jazz repertoire spanning Kenny Garrett, Paul Simon, Bud Powell, Robert Glasper, and Astor Piazzolla, with the Odin Quartet's strings lending several tracks a warmer, more orchestral color.
