Songs for Sinners is an album about the push and pull of belief: running toward something, running away from it, and living in the charged space between the two. Throughout this LP — his second solo album and first in six years — Moses Boyd doesn’t preach or offer answers. Instead, he makes a record that treats faith as something deeply personal, unstable and human — a force that can comfort, unsettle, divide and restore. Gospel is part of the language, but not the whole sentence. Across a vocal-heavy set that folds together jazz, soundsystem culture, 808s, choir harmonies and Caribbean rhythm, Boyd asks what sacred music can sound like without arbitrary rules boxing it in.
Boyd is already one of the most inventive figures in music: a MOBO Award winner, Mercury Prize-shortlisted artist and a drummer, composer and producer who has spent years expanding the possibilities of jazz without ever treating the genre as a museum piece. A decade after “Rye Lane Shuffle” helped introduce his restless imagination to a wider audience, Songs for Sinners feels like a return and a leap forward — an album that reintroduces Boyd as a brilliant player and singular artist with a vision that reaches beyond category.
Musically, Songs for Sinners is as open-ended as its themes. It is gospel-influenced, but not in the traditional sense. The album moves through different textures with ease: bruised jazz chords, bass-heavy soundsystem weight, electronic pulses, organ swells, handclaps, choral lift and moments of raw, communal singing.

Produced by Chance McCoy (Old Crow Medicine Show), Shaving A Dead Man embraces and exuberates in old-time Appalachian folk music. Featuring dark Appalachian fiddle & banjo, Americana gothic drones, and whimsically macabre artwork. The repertoire is heirloom, but newcomers to the old-time genre will hear a hypnotic snap & sway in the silvery plunk of JP's banjo, a spectral, bluesy emotion in McCoy's fiddle, & songs with lyrics that conjure something mythical, mysterious, and sometimes murderous.""This album offers an identifiable element to people who want to access old-time, not necessarily through Smithsonian field recordings. I'm not just some museum-quality reproduction piece. Planting this flag in the mud is saying that I'm still a fringe element, even if I am a traditional roots musician. It makes it identifiable to the next generation of little weird music kids like me."" - JP Harris

Chicago alt-jazz polymath Sen Morimoto returns for their fourth LP Time Is On Your Side, out October 23rd on Sooper Records. Sen is a Japanese-American multi-disciplinary artist and producer in the jazz, alt-pop and rap scenes from Chicago to Japan. Morimoto's releases consistently hop from genre to genre, disparate influences bleeding together in dense arrangements and earnest lyricism. The 9 tracks on Morimoto's newest offering remain reliably unpredictable, fluttering from rootsy folk, to odd-meter funk and ambient jazz. The lush and careful arrangements mark a decided change in Sen's approach that finds their nostalgic songwriting and intimate vocals at center stage.Lyrically, Time Is On Your Side takes on the anxiety of the doom-scroll era with reassuring patience. ""I'm not fighting time anymore,"" Sen says, ""I treat it as an ingredient. Some of these songs only needed a pinch - a couple of improvised takes. Others sat fermenting for years until they became equal parts of my past and future. My hope is that it could inspire the freedom to slow down.""The album features familiar faces from Morimoto's band of Chicago collaborators, Kaina Castillo, Ryan Person, Elijah Bradford and Brok Mende. Lush strings and layered vocal harmonies weave in and out of the band's freewheeling rhythm, at once timeless and inevitable, like a childhood memory distorted by time.

'Unfindable Ring', out October 23 on Bayonet Records, is an adventurer's epic. The arc of the journey, like any good Spirited Away or Neverending Story, lands it's wide-traveled protagonist right back at home before bedtime. Grumpy, like many great hero tricksters before him, has always been a project of juxtaposition: upbeat radio-ready hits whose buoyant, goofy hooks belie the dark thoughts they describe. Much of this, Schmitt acknowledges, owes it's due to the matter-of-fact morbidity of the trans experience in America. It's from these experiences-personal, romantic, political, and existential-that the tale of 'Unfindable Ring' unfolds.Ambition and play have always defined the Grumpy sound. Late last year, the Fader praised their ""demented, hooky"" EP, ""Piebald,"" whose innovative fuzz-pop confections earned them coverage in NPR and the New York Times. Stereogum heralded them as ""wonderfully weird,"" and Paste designated them ""the best of what's next."" Through boisterous collaborations with the likes of Sidney Gish and Claire Rousay, they've effortlessly ingratiated themselves with the titans of DIY, and, more recently, Schmitt has become an unlikely favored collaborator of chart-topping country giant Zach Bryan, who named his new record-which prominently features Schmitt's harmonies-conspicuously, 'With Heaven On Top.'In Grumpy, Heaven Schmitt is joined by Anya Good, Ellie Long (Kid Lake), Austin Arnold, Diego Clare (D.A. Crimson), and Lane Rodgers, who each contribute to every step of the process-engineering and recording, mixing, drafting artwork, producing, and making music videos. A kind of interdisciplinary thieves' guild, the project, while once Schmitt's solo eponym, is a labor of communal love.""We are living these happy lives, and there are people we come across who don't know us at all who want us to die,"" Schmitt, explains. Often the visibility of the joy itself is what prompts the vitriol-""I'm so happy I could die,"" Schmitt belts over and over on the chorus (a familiar figure of speech, sure, but one which, upon any scrutiny, shows Schmitt's hand in the macabre.) A middle finger to fate, Good started asking, ""What are you going to do with your One Beautiful Life?"" Grumpy is going to keep playing, touring, searching, finding.

With six releases as a bandleader, acclaimed pianist and composer Danny Green turns inward for his solo piano debut, Let the Music Happen. The album grew from the simple realization that some of his most inspired playing comes when there is no plan at all, when discovery takes over and the music finds it's own way. Recorded over two days, Green brings together recent compositions and favorite standards, along with a freely imagined arrangement of The Beatles' ""A Day in the Life,"" revealing the melodic imagination and expansive pianism that runs through his catalog of work. Moving effortlessly between intimate reflection and flights of dazzling invention, Green creates an intriguing program filled with personality and warmth. ""Green is a melodist, one of those folks who creates tunes that are at once completely new and yet deeply and intimately familiar.""... South Korean indie sensation wave to earth return with their second full-length album, [bad pieces]. The "all self-made" band — who have handled everything themselves, from recording, mixing and mastering to artwork and visual direction — arrive here two years after the EP [play with earth! 0.03], and quietly but unmistakably step away from the sound that gave them their viral hits, such as "seasons." Vocalist and guitarist Daniel Kim calls this music "closer to the essence of wave to earth than anything we've made." All three voices ran through the writing process more evenly than ever before, and the band frames that shift not as a decision, but as a place any band eventually arrives at.
[bad pieces] takes its inspiration from John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Bed-In protests of 1969. It's an album that makes a single bed its hideout in a messy world. It doesn't offer comfort handed down from above; it starts from a confession: we're clumsy, unlovely pieces too. It has no interest in lecturing or healing. It simply says that staying beside someone is enough to build a shelter of your own.
The sound mirrors that posture. After a long stretch of studying the classic records of the past, the band reached for vintage instruments: nylon-string guitar, Mini Moog bass, and the CP70 piano that anchors the songs' center of gravity. Built on minimalism, the album is the next chapter for a band stepping one pace away from the lo-fi jazz that once defined them.
The pre-release single "heaven and hell" opens the door — a song about a world that can't be split in two, less interested in finding answers than in asking how to live right now. Approaching thirty, the three of them say they "want to grow older without losing the innocence of a child." "courage" leans toward a Lennon/McCartney sensibility, and "hyang" warmly captures the moment someone who thought they understood love comes face to face with the real thing. Every track gathers, in the end, into a single sentence: We'll be here. Come as you are. Courage will find you.
wave to earth have built a global headline touring career unprecedented for a band out of Korea's indie scene, playing more than 100 shows worldwide across 2024 and 2025 and closing out that era with three sold-out nights at Seoul's Olympic Hall in February 2026. This new sound meets an audience for the first time this September on the pieces tour, spanning 29 cities across North America and Asia, including New York's Radio City Music Hall and the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The biggest stages of their career, playing their most stripped-back music yet. [bad pieces] is the record of wave to earth turning their questions back on themselves — and setting those questions down, quietly, beside whoever is listening. The winter of 1990/91: heady times for Swervedriver. The band is freshly signed to Creation Records and are holed up inside Playground Studios in London, recording the demos for Raise, their debut LP. The audio quality is not pristine, you may hear an occasional bum note or dropped beat here and there. You will definitely hear the hiss of amplifiers and the buzz of FX pedals, but most importantly you will hear the songs as they first emerged: fresh, and to all intents and purposes, played live. Raise: Demos collects the best moments of those original portastudio tapes, expertly restored and rebalanced by Tim Turan, and released to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Raise. MX Lonely's PERFECT HOUSE EP is the follow-up to their highly praised debut full-length album ALL MONSTERS. After the success of their album (praised by Pitchfork, Stereogum, Alt Press, POST-TRASH, and more), they returned to the songs they wrote during the album process, giving life to the ones that didn't fit on the initial record. They've cultivated a heavy, murky alt-rock sound that's equally streaked with beauty, described by Stereogum as the ""kind of indie rock that we used to call 'angular' in the '90s, [exploding] into full-on fuzz-riff eruption.""ALL MONSTERS was their first entirely self-recorded release, seeing the band - synthesist/vocalist Rae Haas, guitarist Jake Harms bassist Gabriel Garman and drummer Andy Rapp - capturing a live, immediate, analogue sound which embodies the feeling of their live show, while also creating a more longform and nuanced experience than they have before. Going forward, they aim to keep heading out on the road and building a community based on mutual catharsis. Does everything have to feel so heavy all the time? Claud Mintz fights with this question all the time. Not polite little tiffs, either: Big, dragout, existential wars, the kind that might push you to eventually change the tenor of your whole life. The 10 songs on their rich and resplendent third album Me and the Music find the 27-year-old Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter-producer grappling with that question and coming up, triumphantly, with something close to an answer: Things can be heavy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Things can be heavy, but that beer in your hand isn’t—why not hold it aloft for a moment, sing along with the friends surrounding you, forget your troubles for the length of a perfect indie-pop song?
Me and the Music is Claud’s first album in three years, since 2023’s acclaimed Supermodels. Both Supermodels and 2021’s Super Monster, were largely inspired by “this one situationship” that, they realised sometime during the writing of Me and the Music, “really wasn’t ever anything.” Supermodels was such a serious record, and I just sulked in feelings for so long,” says Claud. “There’s a difference between being sincere with life and taking life too seriously.” Coming to that realization changed everything: On Me and the Music’s title track, they sing that “this is the last song I let you ruin,” and they meant it. Once Claud wrote that song—at the famed Electric Lady Studios with their friends Hank Heaven and Annie DiRusso—they began to feel totally unburdened. “It released a lot of regret that I was carrying with me, and it allowed me to be like… this is so fun,” they say. “Making music is so fun.” Me and the Music’s MO, then, is songs that capture the knottiness of growing up and existing in the world that don’t lose a sense of playfulness or fun. It’s a quintessential slice-of-life record, touching on new romance and inside jokes and Gap commercials and the band America and the place America, and treating all those things with care and consideration.
Me and the Music lead single “She Doesn’t Love Me” is, in many ways, the core of the album—a light-feeling song about what it’s like to be queer and trans in America in the 2020s. (It is a strident, driving anthem that doesn’t shy away from pain—and still makes you want to, as Claud sings on the track, put your “beers in the air.”) When Claud wrote the song with Heaven and DiRusso, they felt firmly that it should be a yacht rock song; the demo ended up “lo-fi and indie” anyway. Me and the Music was produced by Claud and John Congleton (Alvvays, St. Vincent) and represents a full-circle moment for Claud, who finally felt, with this record, that they were a confident enough producer to assume a co-producer role (and have since gone on to produce a string of viral singles by Romy Mars). Collaboration is, of course, an essential part of Claud’s work—who are we without our friends? In addition to Claud, they’re one-quarter of Shelly, a band they founded with Clairo, Noa Getzug and Josh Mehling.
Me and the Music sees Claud reuniting with their longtime collaborator Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan) on “The Legend.” It explores the feeling of being deeply in love with someone who doesn’t want to be seen with you, says Claud: “It’s sort of about a shitty relationship, and wanting to flaunt love, but not being able to do that,” they say. But, if Me and the Music has a true love song, it’s “I Owe You,” a dream-pop road song that’s devotional and rich. It captures the spirit of Me and the Music as a whole: Taking things day by day, taking stock of what’s around you, and embracing the beautiful things when they arrive. That doesn’t feel so heavy.

Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr. Lived an extraordinary life, from which we all benefitted. His combination of New Orleans R&B, blues, jazz, funk, and rock permeated the musical landscape of the late '60s and beyond. While quite young, he was influenced by piano players, including Professor Longhair. As a teenage musical prodigy, Mac was a songwriter, arranger, A&R guy, and a producer for Ace Records, running sessions with legendary artists. During the 1960s, as a "first call" Los Angeles studio musician, he honed his chops doing session work for artists including Sonny & Cher, Canned Heat, and Frank Zappa. Years later, he developed his persona of Dr. John The Night Tripper and his 1968 debut album, Gris Gris, was a phenomenon, attracting fans across the musical spectrum. It's "I Walk On Guilded Splinters" has been covered by The Allman Brothers, Cher, Paul Weller, The Neville Brothers, and was a centerpiece of Humble Pie's classic Performance Rockin' The Fillmore. More singles and albums followed including "Iko Iko" (from Dr. John's Gumbo) and "Right Place Wrong Time" (which hit #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.) Both Gris Gris and Gumbo were listed on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of All Time, and Dr. John performed In The Right Place's "Such A Night" at The Band's 1976 farewell concert-immortalized in The Last Waltz. He would go on to win six Grammy awards and in 2011 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by John Legend. Now, his singles from those early and influential Atco/Atlantic years have been collected on Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya: Singles 1968-1974. 26 sides of pure musical medicine from Dr. John. Available as a double LP, the packaging contains liner notes from Gene Sculatti. Featuring the hits "Right Place Wrong Time," "Iko Iko," "Such A Night," and rare single edits of other classics, Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya: Singles 1968-1974 is not only the right place to start your Dr. John journey, but the perfect place to relive the classic Atco/Atlantic albums.

The National Symphony Orchestra presents a new recording of William Grant Still's Symphony No.2 "Song of a New Race" and Symphony No.4 "Autochthonous." Bringing together two of his most significant large-scale works, this album highlights Still's pivotal contribution to 20th-century American orchestral music and offers a vivid portrait of his evolving artistic vision. These symphonies lie at the core of Still's output, each engaging deeply with themes of cultural identity, national character, and the diverse influences that shape the American musical landscape. Heard together, they reveal the breadth of Still's symphonic voice and help address the limited recorded representation of his major orchestral works. Released at a moment of renewed attention to America's cultural heritage, the album aligns with America 250-the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. Together, the NSO and Gianandrea Noseda offer these works as a meaningful contribution to the ongoing story of America's musical legacy.

A feeling of hope slithering from dark corners permeates most every track of Sour Widows' new LP, Sigil. Crafted with acclaimed producer and Jay Som mastermind Melina Duterte in downtown Los Angeles, the album's eleven songs curve in unexpected directions and are the most magnetic Sour Widows have written yet. There is a newfound immediacy to the album as if Sour Widows have urgent findings to share, and throughout Sigil, ostensible disaster ushers in a new start.

"When we were approached by Adebowale Osunnibu with what would become Kilofese, we knew he had something special. Aside from Fela Kuti's own band, Egypt 80 (lead now by his son, Seun Kuti), it is astoundingly rare to find Afrobeat music being made in it's home of Lagos, Nigeria. In fact, Adebowale performed with Egypt 80 for many years on Baritone Saxophone, deepening his understanding of the music he grew up listening to. This is why when he told us that he was crafting his own music, bringing his voice to the forefront, and working with the next generation of students in Lagos, we couldn't wait to hear it. Given his training in the most long-standing Afrobeat band of all time, we shouldn't have been surprised with what he sent us: an album packed with powerful vocals, cascading horn lines, and relentlessly driving grooves. From the slow-burn of "AJO" to the uptempo frenzy of "Kilofese", each song is carried by a cannon of rhythm to deliver messages of freedom, culture, and joy."Kilofese", translating to "do what you want to do" in Yoruba, is meant in direct opposition to government control. The cornerstone of Afrobeat, distinguishing itself from it's Highlife and Funk predecessors, is the disdain for colonial rule, government corruption and oppression to the common people. With the backbone of James Brown-infused funk, Yoruban sensibilities, and Tony Allen's ingenious drumming, these sentiments were imbued by Fela Kuti to Nigeria and the rest of the world, resounding through decades up to this very moment. Kilofese is an album that reverberates this sound into future generations with originality while maintaining the strength in the classic sound of Afrobeat.

As Warped Tour pop-punk and American Apparel indie rock dominated the strange post-Y2K guitar-band milieu, Boston's Karate delivered an engrossing shot of rock that constantly shifted between several shades of subterranean sounds. The quiet moments on Karate's millennium-busting fourth album carry much of that old, unbridled intensity, braided into subdued jazz melodies and slowcore restraint. Karate's transition into rock maturity bore supple fruit with Unsolved, presented here with three rehearsal tracks, never before on CD.

While West Coast hip-hop is often reduced to a narrow set of sounds and styles, the reality of California rap has always been far more expansive. Nowhere is that more evident than in Los Angeles, where the iconic G-Funk legacy exists alongside a thriving independent scene that continues to push hip-hop in new directions. Few artists embody this intersection as naturally as Blu. Long inspired by the signature sounds of his hometown while rooted in the lyricism and soul of L.A.'s underground, the acclaimed rapper has spent his impressive career bridging these worlds. His new project ""LA"" is a sharp distillation of that artistic identity, paying homage to classic West Coast sonics while painting a layered portrait of life in the City of Angels. To bring that vision to life, Blu linked with talented Oakland producer Sndtrak, a member of 9th Wonder's Soul Council production collective known for his work with Larry June, Rapsody, and Smif-N-Wessun. Reimagining vintage West Coast grooves through a fresh lens, Sndtrak provides the ideal backdrop for Blu's sharp writing and grounded storytelling. Featuring Volume 10, Thurz, MED, Iman Omari, Trizz, ICECOLDBISHOP, and more, ""LA"" highlights the creative evolution in one of hip-hop's most vital cities.
