Animative embodies a culmination of the harmonically rich, loops-inflected sound that first germinated on Johnson’s 2020 full band release Freedom Exercise and on his immersive 2024 solo album Unusual Object. The ten track album – co-produced by Johnson and Paul Bryan, featuring contributions from Meshell Ndegeocello, Macie Stewart, Marquis Hill, Ben Lumsdaine, and more – is a marvel of electro-acoustic innovation that combines compositional brilliance and technological ambition into a mesmerizing blend of skeletal soul-jazz, post-bop, electronic minimalism, and dreamy ambience.
Throughout the album, Johnson puts sophisticated technologies to work, often using the saxophone to control a sampler or a drum machine, triggering changes in a loop or an effect. But it’s always in service of a feeling — working to escape the trap of mastery. “I'm looking to make it feel more human,” Johnson says. In particular, he cites fellow Chicagoan, saxophonist, and 360-degree artistic thinker Eddie Harris and the brilliant piano eccentric Mal Waldron as influences on his approach to breaking form and emphasizing the corporeal elements of performance.
The spectrum of influence, clarity of intention, and confidence in craft present in Johnson’s approach yields stunning results on Animative. Whether it’s spiritual and wandering works augmented by the idiosyncratic overloads of hardware technology (as on the stirring “Aughts Hymnal”), stumbling funk that pulsates with the glow of otherworldly deep sea life (“High Step”), surrealist dancefloor cuts (“Jazz Chord Possession”) or cloudy collages of shoegaze saxophone (“Upstairs 2021”), Animative coheres into a strange and beautiful whole — a generous and spellbinding reflection of its auteurist creator. 4 Dear Life, the fourth studio album from multi-platinum indie/alternative trailblazer Gus Dapperton, arrives via ALTER Music on October 23, 2026. An independent artist for the first time in years, at the close of his twenties, he felt like he needed a clean slate to find his musical practice again. The result is inspired by his life in NYC - DJing and dancing between clubs and bars in Manhattan and Brooklyn, settling into an apartment, building routines, and the community around him. Pairing dance-driven production with his signature songwriting, the album may sound like a departure from his previous work, but it's his most honest and grounded to date. 4 Dear Life isn't about escaping the world, it's about finding enough joy to live in it. The album releases alongside Standard LP on dusk vinyl, Indie-Exclusive LP on starburst vinyl, and digipak CD.

The Fretliners are a band defined by their songwriting—stories carried by powerful harmonies, dynamic arrangements, and a sound that feels both timeless and new. Their music leans into the tradition of acoustic string instruments but reaches well beyond genre, resonating with listeners through honesty and craft. In 2023, they swept both the Telluride Bluegrass and RockyGrass band competitions—an achievement matched only once before. That fall, their debut self-titled album earned widespread acclaim, praised for its originality and heartfelt lyricism. With songs that balance tradition and innovation, The Fretliners continue to chart a bold path forward, creating music that connects as deeply on record as it does on stage.

"When we were approached by Adebowale Osunnibu with what would become Kilofese, we knew he had something special. Aside from Fela Kuti's own band, Egypt 80 (lead now by his son, Seun Kuti), it is astoundingly rare to find Afrobeat music being made in it's home of Lagos, Nigeria. In fact, Adebowale performed with Egypt 80 for many years on Baritone Saxophone, deepening his understanding of the music he grew up listening to. This is why when he told us that he was crafting his own music, bringing his voice to the forefront, and working with the next generation of students in Lagos, we couldn't wait to hear it. Given his training in the most long-standing Afrobeat band of all time, we shouldn't have been surprised with what he sent us: an album packed with powerful vocals, cascading horn lines, and relentlessly driving grooves. From the slow-burn of "AJO" to the uptempo frenzy of "Kilofese", each song is carried by a cannon of rhythm to deliver messages of freedom, culture, and joy."Kilofese", translating to "do what you want to do" in Yoruba, is meant in direct opposition to government control. The cornerstone of Afrobeat, distinguishing itself from it's Highlife and Funk predecessors, is the disdain for colonial rule, government corruption and oppression to the common people. With the backbone of James Brown-infused funk, Yoruban sensibilities, and Tony Allen's ingenious drumming, these sentiments were imbued by Fela Kuti to Nigeria and the rest of the world, resounding through decades up to this very moment. Kilofese is an album that reverberates this sound into future generations with originality while maintaining the strength in the classic sound of Afrobeat.
