True to it's name, Extraordinary, Gareth Donkin's second album widens the scale of his virtuosic soul-pop songcraft not just on a sonic level, but in a profoundly personal way. A step wiser and more confident, the London-based singer-songwriter and producer let's go of past constructs to celebrate the present tense with his most sophisticated, vast, and dazzling work to date, nodding to disco, R&B, and funk greats with playful charisma and modern sheen. He says, "Extraordinary is about taking ownership of your life, embracing new experiences and adventure."Donkin's 2023 breakthrough debut, Welcome Home, resonated from BBC Radio to Billboard ("a soul-savant"), and brought him to US stages for the first time, and opened the door to working with a few of his heroes, including a collaborative role on the latest de la Soul record. Yet the season was marked by setbacks and heartbreak. First, he reached for fantasy with the cathartic Suite Escape EP. Then, in a clearer headspace, he enlisted a dream ensemble to realize his next vision, including ESME, Kiefer, UHMEER, Shaan Ramaprasad, and Disclosure's Howard Lawrence.Donkin's made a name for himself as an old soul, one-man-band in the ilk of Prince and Stevie Wonder, often seen on socials assembling songs with mystifying ease. Like past work, Extraordinary captures this undeniable talent and charm. What sets the record apart is the expanse in which these virtues shine. "It just sounds bigger, more current," he adds. From unifying anthems to drama-shedding declarations, Donkin unlocks the kind of optimism that can only come from hard work on yourself.

If you were to ask Joey Quiñones where he found inspiration for his music, you wouldn't have to look far from where the East LA son grew up. Listen to his work, and you're transported to a two-block radius of his neighborhood-from the liquor store to Sign of Music record store on Whittier Boulevard and back to a homie's house. In those two blocks, you hear cumbia blaring from the stores, punk rehearsals from a garage, oldies drifting from a neighbor's yard-a sensory overload that follows you home, all those genres singing in your head at once. This isn't a revelation to longtime fans of Quiñones' music. He has established himself as a premier interpreter of his generation, dedicating his career to offering his unique perspective on the Chicano soul songbook. But before Thee Sinseers, before the lush orchestrations and pitch-perfect harmonies that became his signature, Quiñones cut his teeth leading various backing bands for visiting Jamaican ska and dancehall acts touring Southern California. He describes those years as reggae college, getting yelled at by every Jamaican artist who had a record out. Those years ofapprenticeship in rock steady and roots reggae would inform everything that followed-and on his new solo record Inna Soul Steady Situation, Quiñones finally showcases those influences front and center. That quintessential blending of styles rings out immediately on the opening track "Soul Steady Situation"-Quiñones's vocals enter like a selector toasting over the riddim, an alarm call announcing his intentions with an urgency that feels club-ready and immediate. Then comes the classic drum fill, dropping into a rock steady groove that establishes the vibe: this is dancehall-infused soul meant for movement, not just contemplation. It's a deliberate departure from Thee Sinseers' lush orchestrations, stripped down to showcase the Jamaican foundations that have always lived beneath Quiñones's work. Before you know it, you've taken off on a sonic soul spaceship with Quiñones at the helm, supported by his two-person crew: Eric Johnson from Thee Sinseers on saxophone and Eleazar from the Brown Boyz on piano, as you cruise across silver-lined clouds and dip your toes into dreamy moonlit grooves found on "Don't Let Go," "Driftin'" and "One MoreNight."What Quiñones manages to do on this record-with the full support of Colemine Records, the defining label for contemporary soul music happening right now-is prove time and time again that he is an artist willing to take risks and continue to show his prowess when it comes to experimenting with different styles, while still being able to authentically express himself. It's a partnership built on trust: Colemine has established itself as the premier destination for modern soul artists pushing the genre forward, recognizing that genre-blurring isn't a gimmick but the natural evolution of soul music itself. With that authentic self-expression, Quiñones and his crew manage to squeeze in some lighthearted fun as well, establishing a sense of equilibrium to counteract the heavier emotional overtones found on previous Sinseers efforts. A perfect example is "Bolsita," a tongue-in-cheek party song paying homage to iconic anthems like "Tequila" by The Champs and "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell & the Drells. But Quiñones doesn't stop there-he folds in electric boogaloo, early Ray Charles big band energy, and the Latin soul flourishes of Joe Cuba and Willie Colón, creating something that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Eric Johnson's saxophone takes center stage, adding playful solos that widen the sonic spectrum. The term "bolsita," which translates to "little bag," serves as the lingua franca for "let's get the party started"-it's admittedly corny, Quiñones will tell you, but it's the kind of song where everybody's going to shout along whether they like it or not. And that's precisely the point.

Maurice "Mobetta" Brown has always thrived at the crossroads-between jazz and hip-hop, improvisation and songcraft, trumpet and microphone. With Betta Days, the Grammy-winning trumpeter, composer, and MC sharpens his genre-bending vision into one of his most dynamic statements yet.The album plays like a conversation between worlds: lush horn arrangements sit beside hard-hitting beats, verses weave seamlessly through melodies, and Brown's trumpet leads with equal parts fire and finesse. A student of jazz tradition who came up in Chicago's storied scene, he's since expanded his reach into hip-hop and soul, collaborating with icons like Aretha Franklin, Santigold, Talib Kweli, and Anderson.Paak. Betta Days captures the spirit of all those influences while standing firmly in Mobetta's lane.At it's core, Betta Days is about resilience and growth-finding light even in heavy times. The songs carry a message of pushing forward, fueled by the energy of community and the joy of creation. Whether he's delivering sharp verses or soaring trumpet lines, Maurice Mobetta Brown reminds listeners that the future is wide open, and that better (or Betta) days are always ahead.1xLP, pressed on Pink Vinyl with Green Splatter

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Son Little expands his musical palette on his upcoming album, Cityfolk. Blending elements of soul, folk, and blues, Son Little captures his signature sound along with expressive yet personal lyrics. Cityfolk is a reflection on love, loss, and finding peace in the chaos. It's about holding on, letting go, and learning to breathe again when the world feels heavy. Born Aaron Earl Livingston to a preacher and a teacher in Los Angeles, Little's collaborations with The Roots and RJD2 helped him make a name for himself in his adopted hometown of Philadelphia. Critics were quick to recognize the unique power of Little's solo recordings, which stripped the past for parts that could be reconstituted into something wholly new and original. NPR hailed Little's "impeccably crafted songs" as "honest and unpretentious," while The Independent proclaimed him "a formidable talent." Since then, his catalog has racked up over 250 million streams, and Little has toured with everyone from Leon Bridges and Kelis to Shakey Graves and Mumford & Sons alongside festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Newport Folk, and more. Never one to rest on his laurels, Little also earned a GRAMMYr for his work helming Mavis Staples' acclaimed 'See That My Grave Is Kept Clean.'

Mamas Gun is a 5-piece band from the UK. Their sound is one that straddles so-called blue eyed soul and the best of soul in the black music tradition. With soul music being the common ground between the 5 members, echoes of artists such as Marvin Gaye, Bobby Caldwell, Bill Withers, Lewis Taylor and Sly Stone can be heard weaving in between the sonic threads of their frequently uplifting and heart rending music.Their sixth album 'DIG!' was recorded live to 16 track tape and features Brian Jackson on its title track. Mamas Guns band members include Andy Platts - the songwriting frontman with the golden falsetto; Drummer Chris Boot – the band's backbone, supplying the heaviest grooves with a jazz player's lightness of touch; Bass player Cameron Dawson, flowing and fearless echoing the spirit of James Jamerson but with a melodic sound uniquely his own; Terry Lewis, a guitarist whose taste, feel bring a warm old school validity, and last but by no means least; Dave Oliver, a dynamic keys player whose profound command of the piano, wurlitzer and hammond organ joins the dots from jazz to gospel to soul with ease.

Released in 1970, Funkadelic's self-titled debut was a radical collision of psychedelic rock, gospel, blues, and soul - a chaotic, genre-defying statement that redefined the possibilities of Black music. Where Motown aimed for Polish and crossover appeal, Funkadelic dove headfirst into distortion, improvisation, and spiritual ambiguity, offering a sound as gritty and unpredictable as the era itself. Backed by a ferocious young band - including Eddie Hazel, Billy Bass Nelson, Tawl Ross, Tiki Fulwood, and Mickey Atkins - the album rejected convention in favor of raw groove and existential noise. Tracks like "I Got a Thing..." and "What Is Soul" pulse with menace and joy, bookended by surreal monologues that echo both street philosophy and space-age gospel. As part of Org Music's Westbound Records reissue series, this edition restores the album's full impact across multiple formats. The deluxe double LP, mastered at 45RPM directly from tape by Dave Gardner at DSG Mastering, offers the highest fidelity to date. Gardner and restoration specialist Catherine Vericolli archived and restored the original master tapes at 54 Sound Studios in Ferndale, Michigan, with assistance from in-house engineer Nick King. A single LP edition, cut from high-resolution tape transfers, is also available, alongside CD, cassette, and digital formats. A sonic revolution in it's time and a lasting influence ever since, Funkadelic remains a groundbreaking testament to music without rules and freedom without limits.

To say that The Sinseers play oldies would be a misnomer. Fronted by bandleader and son of East Los Angeles Joey Quiniones, the group has quietly chipped away at the sounds of R&B and soul for the last half-decade. Quinones and his crew have continuously created a distinctive vibe that explores all aspects of a timeless genre, bringing together their interpretation of music through an unmistakable modern lens. With their most recent effort, the aptly titled Sinseerly Yours (Colemine 2023), the band recorded most of the album live in the studio. With Quinones on vocals and keys, vocalist Adriana Flores, Christopher Manjarrez on bass, Francisco Floreson on guitar, Bryan Ponce on guitar and vocals, Luis Carpio on drums and vocals, saxophonists Eric Johnson and Steve Surman, and Jose Luis Jimenez on trombone, The Sinseersachieves their most fully realized sound to date. All of the album's stunning tracks were recorded in a converted studio space in Rialto, California, known as Second Hand Sounds. The converted studio space, which used to be a dentist's office, allowed the group toexperiment with their sound like never before-this time, the group managed to take a series of big swings, only to emerge with a fuller, more pronounced version of themselves. Despite those new strides, the band remains wholly committed to it's sonic aesthetic while injecting it's brand of vibrant 21st-century cool.Of course, the group has never been the type to shy away from their influences as they expertly toggle between 60s pop vis-Ã -vie early Beatles records to obscure dancehall Jamaican tunes-all fully extrapolated and reinterpreted through modern Chicano soul sound that the group has built their everlasting repertoire on.Quinones and bandmates have continued to apply what they've learned from their previous releases and their relentless touring schedule throughout the country. It's clear here that the work is paying off, putting to practice their musical chops thoroughly with all members expertly honing their sound. The melting pot of ideas is showcased with incredibly lush orchestrations and arrangements, married with pitch-perfect harmonies, allowing the group to further solidify themselves in the pantheon of the Southern Californian songbook.

Released in 1978, "Get It Out'cha System" was the follow-up to "Feelin' Bitchy", which went gold in 1977 and spawned two hit singles. The first single taken from "Get It Out'cha System" was Jackson's beautiful take on the Kenny Rogers ballad 'Sweet Music Man' which reached #33 in the US soul singles chart. Other tracks on the album covered familiar Jackson territory from the tender 'He Just Wants To Hear The Words' to 'Logs And Thangs' where Jackson warned her man that if he did not light her fire then she'd put another log in her fireplace! This was the Millie Jackson her fans loved. "Get It Out'cha System" went gold upon release and peaked at #14 on the Billboard Soul album chart. Out of print since 1978, Ace are delighted to put it back into the system again complete with liner notes from our own Ian Shirley.
