Grateful Dead's first ever gig in UK and Europe 1970. There have been a few, I DJ'd and compered at The Grateful Dead at Ted Askey's pig farm, Staffordshire, this was a great example"". 56 years ago the Grateful Dead made their first trip across the pond to play at the Hollywood Festival. The two-day outdoor event was packed with a variety of local and national talent, which included the likes of Traffic, Ginger Baker's Airforce, Mungo Jerry, The Flaming Groovies, Tony Joe White, a very young Black Sabbath, and Jose Feliciano. The Dead performed a fine electric set despite the tiny stage, crowded press arena, and a PA and monitoring system that they weren't able to hear. No problem, the boys played full tilt for three hours straight to the delight of the Newcastle-under-Lyme freaks and adventurous locals. One reviewer said ""It represents a band playing at the edge of new possibilities and ideas,"" The British press were unanimous in their positive appraisal of the Dead's showing at the festival: Mac Garry (in Zigzag 13) said that they were ""... totally magnificent."" His description of Jerry's performance was compelling: ""... Enneads is a New York-based trio featuring pianist Phyllis Chen, drummer Hamir Atwal, and Zach Layton on the rare 17-string electric bass. Named after the writings of the neoplatonic philosopher Plotinus, the ensemble approaches improvisation through the ancient idea, first articulated by Pythagoras, that harmony is ""number made audible."" The trio uses natural string harmonics as the foundation of it's concept of improvisation. Harmonic and inharmonic overtones, sympathetic vibrations, rhythmic proportions, and resonant room acoustics are all parameters of an emerging musical form explored through Chen, Atwal, and Layton's intuitive approach to spontaneous composition. Layton's gigantic and unusual instrument, the 17-string bass, is played in a variety of tunings and functions almost like an amplified Greek Lyre (or maybe a Baroque electric Theorbo), running through heavy fuzz, distortion, and ring modulation, while Chen explores the interior of an amplified grand piano, producing rich constellations of expanded sound clusters, and the percussive attack of the hammers as they strike the strings, running through a Rat distortion circuit. Atwal's drumming grounds it all through fluid cycles of hypnotic pulsation and propulsive motion that contributes to a hypnotic and sensitive and tactile sense of temporal structure. Recorded between 2024 and 2026 at Layton's studio in New York's Hudson Valley, the material on the Enneads' debut self-titled record is a distillation of the trio's approach towards improvisation. Throughout the album, harmonics drift into slowly beating patterns, while dreamy reverberant atmospheres evolve into dense layers of distorted harmonics, recalling the gravitational pull of doom metal within the context of experimental music and contemporary jazz. Dawson began running around the same time he started making records. At this point it's unclear where one practice ends and the other begins. The album's title has become the ethos he's embraced for all things in life. Long Slow Dance unravels the woven collage of his previous work. Here each song consists of three long guitar takes, panned across the stereo-field with minimal overdubs. ""I remember my grandmother always kept a rain barrel on the farm. Just a simple vessel that served as a means for gathering water for the garden and the flowers. I wanted to instill that sentiment on this record. Other than some panning and recreational EQing, the computer was just a vessel to gather sounds."" There is a distant grace to the album. A soft expanse, a quiet contrast. Guitars dissolve and then recalibrate. Sparse melodic motifs bloom and fracture. Warm chords clash and make amends. Alpenglow textures shimmer against tones that feel weathered by salt air. The songs are lightly propulsive, yet drift at a glacial pace. Fields and artifacts ground the material, like keeping your eyes on the horizon. Long Slow Distance feels intuitive, sentimental, and like Dawson is one step closer to whatever distance he is chasing.
