If there's one thing Panic Shack know, it's how to have a good time. Comprised of Sarah Harvey (vocals), Meg Fretwell (guitar/backing vocals), Romi Lawrence (guitar/backing vocals), Em Smith (bass/backing vocals) and Nick Williams (drums), the band formed in 2018 as a middle-finger to the "members-only club" atmosphere of indie and punk scenes - not just because they're male-dominated, but because they make playing music seem out of reach or, even worse, boring. "Boys make it look so hard, " Em says, rolling her eyes. "Whenever I see someone on the floor fiddling with their pedals with a face like a slapped arse I think, you're making this look so unattainable and it's actually so fucking easy." This carefree approach gives Panic Shack's music the same effect as popping a bottle of Prosecco - explosive, intoxicating, and delightfully chaotic. With barely any music available online, they built a word-of-mouth following off the back of their live shows, which have been praised for fusing "thrashy early LA-style punk with choreography that owes something to the Go-Go's and Iron Maiden all at once" (The Guardian). That quickly snowballed into tours with the likes of Bob Vylan and Soft Play, and festival appearances at Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Green Man, End of the Road, SXSW and more. Released in 2022, their acclaimed Baby Shack EP bottled the lightning they have on stage, cementing their ability to blend killer hooks with a contagious sense of humour. The first vinyl pressing - splattered pink, obviously - sold out almost instantly. To be released in July, Panic Shack's self-titled debut album represents a serious level up. Linking up with producer?Ali Chant?(PJ Harvey, ?Perfume Genius, ?Yard Act), ?it finds the band expanding their gutsy punk sound into fuller territory, packed with vocal harmonies, synths, electronic experimentation, and even a trumpet at one point. Over 11 breakneck tracks, Panic Shack never let's up or loses momentum. It opens with the rising sound of chatter, glass clinking and laughter, most of which was recorded in the beer garden at an Amyl & the Sniffers gig. Fizzing with the anticipation of walking into a club at the start of a night out, it feels like party-punk's answer to the intro of Spice Girls' 'Wannabe'. From there, the bouncy bass line and blistering guitars of 'Girl Band Starter Band' kick in, and the band pulls you into their world the way a friend would grab your hand and drag you onto the dancefloor. "Four iced lattes / Sit outside / Smoke a rolly / Sun is shining / People watching / Things are moving / Got us talking..." Sarah chants, the pace ramping up like a heartbeat beginning to race. Across the album, the lyrics are conversational, often stemming from in-jokes, while the subject matter spans the full range of the feminine experience. Whether it's everyday stuff like browsing Hinge ('Unhinged') and remembering everything you need to stick in your bag because your dress has no pockets ('Pockets'), or broader societal issues like the impact of toxic tabloid culture on body image ('Gok Wan') and sexual harassment ('SMELLARAT'), no topic is too frivolous or too vast. There's no point-scoring or political commentary to be made here, though. The songs spring naturally from the way they live their lives, which is, more often than not, with a great deal of enjoyment. Irresistible because of their simplicity and charming because of their familiarity, Panic Shack are the answer to a question that, quite frankly, isn't asked often enough: what if the funniest girls you know started a band? The sonic equivalent to a coming-of-age film unfolding over a single night, ?Panic Shack?takes the shape of a bender, beginning by approaching a bar and ending with an impassioned speech at sunrise about how much you love your friends. Swerving the expected topics of sex and romance, the entire album revolves around the ionic bond between the four girls. "In a world currently defined by unrest, uncertainty, and cultural fracture, acclaimed saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Isaiah Collier returns with Joy, a 5-track EP that reframes one of humanity's most nuanced emotions both as a devotional grounding and political act. Collier's deeply personal compositions present joy as an act that isn't rooted in escapism or abstraction, but rather, as something hard-won rooted in lived experience, shaped by transformation, and sustained through connection. Throughout the album's five compositions, Collier positions joy as a guiding light during challenging times, an expression of challenging yourself to utilize your gifts, an affirmation of love and discovery, and as an affirmative source of reassurance. "We are in a paradoxical time, where so much is being revealed to us," Collier shares. "Everything feels political from every scope... our collective hearts feel the heaviness in the air. Yet I say to you all-don't despair. For right now, the most political thing we can do is share joy." That ethos is made clear in the opening title track and lead single "Joy." A pulsing rhythmic motif anchors the melody with a sense of both searching and certainty. Collier conceived the piece around 3 years ago reflecting on a time where many people in his life were experiencing loss of family and friends and experiencing profound life transitions. "Everything just felt like it was falling apart with no aim in sight," he reflects. "Yet, there is a light at the end of it all." As he played the chords with a sense of urgency, he could feel the vibration of yellow in the piece. That initial triplet motif serves as the guiding light on the piano and the only word Collier could hear was Joy. In addition to Collier at the helm singing and playing piano and tenor sax on the track, it features an expansive 11-piece ensemble with a full horn and string section allowing Collier's propensity for composition and arrangement to shine with an eclectic sonic palette. "Landscape of Dreams" finds Collier serendipitously leaning into utilizing his gifts as a multi-instrumentalist. While he had a sketch of the piece going into the studio, a traffic delay caused musicians to be late arriving at the studio. Never one to waste time in the studio environment, Collier stepped into new creative territory and took up the challenge of executing playing all instruments himself as an act of trust and experimentation. "I've never done this before, and so it was a leap of faith for me," he asserts. "I always dream of doing stuff like this, and being part of the small percentage of people who can do it like Prince, Steve Lacy, Frank Zappa, and Stevie Wonder. The end result finds Collier immersed in a hypnotic soundscape playing layered flutes, drums, Metatron, Wurlitzer, and auxiliary percussion. Another layer of joy is revealed in "Where I'm Loved" that serves as a love letter and leaning into the process of stepping into the willingness to explore life and love with a partner. On the intimate meditation of vulnerability and connection, Collier's vocal prowess is on full display, exerting effortless falsetto reminiscent of D'Angelo over soulful Wurlitzer and guitar as he crosses over into more R&B-inspired realms. "I believe everyone deserves this feeling or to honor the memories of it. Furthermore, I believe you should also go where you're celebrated and not tolerated." "When the Dust Settles" captures the electricity of live collaboration and Collier further steps out of being confined to any specific genre. He had just gotten a microKORG keyboard from co-producer Sonny Daze and was exploring the vast array of sounds on the instrument. Collier plays synth bass on the microKORG joined by the electrifying improvisation of Cole Runge on guitar and the combustible rhythm of his brother Jeremiah Collier on drums with additional post-production work from Sonny Daze. The band doesn't pretend that intensity is sustainable; instead, they document the crash with the same care as the ascent. In that way, Cheesy Love Songs feels like a document of early belief - the kind that arrives before irony calcifies, before restraint feels like wisdom. It's a record made by a band still willing to risk the embarrassment of being 'cheesy' in pursuit of something louder, brighter, and more honest than cool. And maybe that's what makes it an iconic modern Australian sophomore album: not just that it captures a moment in time for the band, but that it refuses to outgrow it.
