Rarely has a debut album sounded as complete and sophisticated as ""Hjarta"" from MAUNAH. The Danish doom newcomers seemingly just appear out of the blue to deliver a modern doom metal masterpiece! Well, MAUNAH consists of veterans of the Danish rock, folk, and metal scenes such as Søren Sol Koldsen-Zederkof. The popular frontman has toured extensively with the beloved Nordic folk band KRAUKA, and he has also released several critically acclaimed albums under the artist's name LOS. Quiet Storm expands on their sound and scale as a sprawling, collaborative vision shaped with profound patience and intention, embedding their own coming-of-age story within a moving suite of cathartic abstraction. Songs allude to spirituality and the human condition, the tension between boldness and softness, ambition and persistent inner demons.Quiet Storm is a response to the duo's trajectory since the release of 2021's Honest Labour. ""We challenged ourselves and our own notions of identity, around class and diaspora, and how that is represented across musical genres. We wanted to show the characteristics of our project through the people we chose to work with,"" says Reid. Inyang notes, ""There's no compromise in how we've made this album. The idea started as a celebration of Black artistry. Our collaborations have been very intentional, as we discovered the pillars of the story.""Speaking to the multidisciplinary nature of the project is the involvement of celebrated artist Glenn Ligon, whose work deals with Black identity and queerness. A central inspiration at the onset of recording, Ligon offered his work Figure #30 (2009) for the cover artwork, and following the completion of recording, he agreed to provide the project's name - an unprecedented gesture from the pioneering artist. Listening to the final sequence, Ligon thought of ""Quiet Storm,"" the 1970s radio format known for smooth, late-night programming with themes of life and love. Quiet Storm brings the listener through various scenes, interludes, and arcs, marked by a sense that it's movement is fluid and it's characters are fleeting. Into-the-mirror monologues grapple with the existential and the immediate: survival, autonomy, purpose. The album opens with the explosive, string-backed ""Vanity"" featuring Grammy award winner Axelle Fanyo. At first fixated on the crevices of a quiet room, ""Vanity"" unfurls under Fanyo's expressive soprano, traversing a wide emotional spectrum from sublime contemplation to poignant, heart-piercing pain. Throughout the record, words spoken and sung are placed sparingly to powerful effect. ""MLN""'s beauty and catharsis is a collective slow march, featuring British-Nigerian artist Tony Njoku, with guitar and lead bass by Gabriel Evans, London's PIKE on drums, and Copenhagen's GB on keys and strings.The final movement gives Quiet Storm it's culminating release. ""If This Is Hell"" is assembled in a single take as a stream-of-consciousness from NYC's Deuén, whose relatable array of spiraling brain activity is matched by jazzy, frenetic percussion. The pressure valve opens, as the phased drums and sharp conversational observational dispatched phrases cut abruptly after the line ""I wonder if that's what heaven's like?"" We are left suspended in the comfort of album closer ""Regards."" Rainfall meets organ, drone, strings, and keys with gun reloads juxtaposed over tranquil hums. Heavy yet hopeful, Joshua Tarelle Reid and Joshua Inyang remind you of their journey so far. An appropriately cryptic and transportive outro for their open-ended opus, Quiet Storm is a landmark level-up: self-produced, self-funded, and manifested out of sheer drive and conviction. Living up to it's reputation of presenting music that is out of the ordinary and off the beaten track, SOMM Recordings is releasing Wood on the Tracks with Cellophonics, four of the UK's finest cellists who have been expanding the repertoire with a growing list of exciting new works and rediscovered lost masterpieces. The quartet-Christopher Allan, Adrian Bradbury, Ian Burdge, and Ben Rogerson-having gathered a whole concert's worth of commissions and discoveries, was invited by SOMM to record this debut album. Wood on the Tracks includes first recordings of works commissioned from Simon Baggs, Guy Barker, Roderick Elms, Julia Simpson, and Rowland Sutherland-recorded in the presence of the composers-and forgotten gems by William Alwyn, York Bowen, and Marie Dare. The works by Alwyn and Bowen are also first recordings.Amongst the forgotten gems is the first work on the programme, Suite for Four Cellos, by composer-pianist York Bowen (1884-1961). The parts and full score of the suite were discovered in manuscript by Ben Rogerson in the music library of his late grandfather Haydn Rogerson, one-time principal cello of the Halle Orchestra. Another rediscovery is a set of Two Irish Tunes for Cello Quartet by flautist, teacher, and composer William Alwyn (1905-1985). These had their first performance in 1933 in the Lecture Hall at the Royal Academy of Music, where Alwyn was a professor of composition. The third rediscovery comes from the most significant Scottish-born cellist-composer of her day, Marie Dare (1902-1976). Her distinctive set of works for cello includes Six Pieces for Cello Quartet. From these, Cellophonics performs IV. Aria.The first commissioned work on this programme is a Divertimento for Cello Quartet by Roderick Elms, who writes: 'I wanted to explore the wonderfully lush textures available for four cellos, and this approach is evident in the lyrical central section.' This is offset by rhythmic, somewhat jazz-influenced outer sections. A commission from wide-ranging composer Julia Simpson is Mariposa, which traces the incredible four-generation journey of migration made each year by the monarch butterfly, from Canada to the mountains of western Mexico and back. The multi-gifted Rowland Sutherland is a poet as well as a musician, and his poem HOPE-composed in Japanese haibun style-lends it's name and theme to the work he wrote for Cellophonics. The title work, Wood on the Tracks, is by trumpeter and composer Guy Barker, who says it was only after he completed the work that he realized he had written a piece about trains. The program ends with Soliloquy by conductor, composer, and violinist Simon Baggs. He writes, 'Although written for four cellos, the work stands as the utterance of one voice.' Working with him opened up classical music as a new field for the diatonic harmonica. His Concerto for Diatonic Harmonica and Orchestra remains one of the few significant concert works for this instrument and became an important source of inspiration.The long-standing collaboration between Benyamin Nuss and Konstantin Reinfeld arose from the same curiosity. Over many years, the two musicians developed a shared musical language that bridges classical, jazz, improvisation, and crossover. This deepened musical rapport gave rise to the desire to expand the sound of their duo with the colors of an orchestra.With Elevation, this idea became a reality. The new works by Wolf Kerschek and Benyamin Nuss take up the duo's characteristic sound and transport it into a larger orchestral space.
