It's In The Book", first released in time for Christmas, 2002, is John Waters' attempt to portray, in his words, Johnny Standley's "persnickety, droll, intellectually superior comic monologue," a part song, part exhortation on the subject of Little Bo-Peep in the manner of a revivalist preacher. The original version of "It's In the Book" was a huge, surprise hit upon it's release in 1952, rising to #1 on the Billboard chart and selling over 1-million copies. It's follow-up, the nursery rhyme gone-wrong, comedy routine, "Proud New Father" (released the following year in 1953), would not fare as well- perhaps due to it's gory details. Waters recounts, "It may be the first sick joke I heard as a child." As in the original versions, the two Standley homages include gratuitous laugh tracks. Produced by Grammy-winner, Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, The Good Ones [Rwanda], poet Raymond Antrobus, Zomba Prison Project), Brennan states, "That recordings of dead people prompt living people to laugh is one of the more surreal aspects of recorded medium. That often identical canned laughter tracks have been used redundantly on countless albums and sitcoms for decades is all the eerier." Waters jokes that he chose to press the new single on gold vinyl so that he can at last be able to claim, "I've made a 'Gold Record'. The Whiles are a Columbus, Ohio indie-folk-rock band whose work spans four different decades. Formed in the late 90s, The Whiles have shared the stage with The National, Grizzly Bear and My Morning Jacket, had a song in an Academy Award Nominated documentary (Murderball) and all of it's members have been at the center of the world renowned (and sir Paul McCartney endorsed) Sgt Peppercorn's Marathon, the only show of it's kind in which all 220 songs of the Beatles are performed in a single 14 hour performance. Severed Heads reattach themselves to Dark Entries for an expanded reissue of their 1991 opus Cuisine (With Piscatorial). As originary Aussie industrial legends-although founder Tom Ellard would balk at being branded as such-Severed Heads shaped the continental subcultural sound with their kitchen electronics, chaotic tape loops, and infectious nursery-rhyme-esque melodies. Cuisine (With Piscatorial) was the long-running project's ninth album, and is a commentary on the state of music. Ellard explains: ""The whole food joke is really about what music's about and how disposable it is; people have records like they have cups of coffee."" The album also presents a turn away from the dancefloor formalism of the era, which Ellard dismissed as already sufficiently explored. Cuisine brings us punchy pop kernels of the prime Heads variety, all clocking in around three minutes. Cuts like ""Pilot in Hell"" and ""Ugly Twenties"" rank among the band's best through their deadly skewering of synth pop tropes. But the album also offers us a Piscatorial section, where Ellard felt free to ""go fishing for ideas."" Here we get a taste of the project's demented cut-up sensibilities, like on the ""Quest for Oom Pa Pa"" suite, where vintage jazz records are collaged into an angular nightmare. This double-LP reissue is the first time that Cuisine (With Piscatorial) will appear on vinyl, with a previously unreleased early version of ""Seven of Oceans."" Navajo White is a color. It's the color of an off white, interior, house paint. Throughout his teens into adulthood, John Reis was as a house painter by trade. The soiled walls of evacuated apartments was his canvas. Here he would cover up the residue of life's stains with a fresh coat of the beige, human white-out that is Navajo White. Amongst the vacated, drywall chambers littered with the scant detritus of a fleeing existence is where this record began. It started as road noise, a repetitious hum of a fictional dialogue. A languageless, argument of noise that took shape as a disconnect between two people. They are both barricaded by an impenetrable surface tension that harbors the distortion of their prolonged isolation from the world beyond their self imposed exile. For all that can't be solved or thrown away here's a thick coat of Navajo White to cover our tracks as if to say ""we were never here and this never happened."" This is the fifth Swami John Reis album and features Jason Kourkounis (Hot Snakes, Delta 72, Night Marchers) on drums as well as contributions from Rick Froberg (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, Obits) on guitar, Gar Wood (Hot Snakes, Tanner, Night Marchers) on bass, Joe Guevara (Jejune, Swami and the Bed Of Nails) on piano and keyboards and Rob Crow (Pinback, PLOSIVS) and Jacob Turnbloom (Mrs. Magician) on backing vocals. Fortune favors the brave. And lordy, nobody has been more rewarded than I have by stumbling into the brilliantly crafted world of Ultra Lights. It started innocently enough when I witnessed their second show, appearing on a stacked bill that included locals Bizner and Arbor Labor Union and the Dutch phenom band Lewsberg. After their opening set, I went up to guitarist/vocalist John Robinson and asked if their closing song was a cover, because it sounded so dang familiar. An earworm for the ages, if you will. Yeah, it was that annoyingly catchy. Maybe was it a Fang song? That Sunday night signaled the beginning of my torrid love affair with Ultra Lights.Ultra Lights' first release was ""Nostalgia."" At the time it was unquestionably their best song. ""Nostalgia will eat the young""? Are you serious? That still stops me in my tracks. The two subsequent singles were equally all killer, no filler. The six-song 12"" that collects all three singles is equally spotless. I've got zero notes. The band has played New York (including a WFMU session!), Chicago, Nashville, and anywhere else that'll take them. Left in their wake are fans like me who are convinced that Ultra Lights is their new favorite band. Enter Pleasure's All Yours. A record that, by any reasonable metric, is a stone-cold masterpiece. Not just compared to records by other bands in Georgia or, more broadly, the South. No, I mean that in the great history of recorded music, this is up there with the greats: Loveless, Funhouse, Is This Real?, Bandwagonesque. Pleasure's All Yours is a record that came out of the forge perfectly cast. A prestige effort. This record is honest t'god special. Become properly acquainted with Pleasure's All Yours. Listen to it. Study it. And let me just get this out of the way: John Robinson is a songwriting genius with derisively brilliant nihilistic lyrics. He's a mindful postgrad of years upon years of studying the masters, from Australia's supreme trash rock to American buzz guitar pop and back again. Pleasure's All Yours is eleven songs of unrelenting perfection. ""Bad Feeling"" is the first single. Why? Well, while the whole record is airtight (prove me wrong), ""Bad Feeling"" feels just twenty percent additionally special. I suspect it has something to do with the middle eight that'll bring a tear to your eye, or perhaps the achingly catchy chorus that will stop you in your tracks, or just the reductive lyric ""It's a pretty nice day for a kick in the face."" I mean, wow. Just wow. Such laconically brilliant songcraft that you're gonna wonder, just like I did, if that last song's a cover. Let me tell ya somethin', cupcake, it's all original. Lyrical headscratchers abound. Botox on my balls. Fillers in my guts. Got damage? Good god, yes. All undeniably Ultra Lights.Pleasure's All Yours is an unstoppable pop juggernaut. John's wife, Leela, is on second guitar and backup vox. The rough-and-tumble rhythm section of Gus and Alex have stripped away the bullshit, leaving nothing but a sinewy platform for John's inarguably flawless jams. Listen to the album once and you'll agree. Recorded masterfully by Khris Sampson and mastered beautifully by Mikey Young. Pleasure's all yours, indeed.As with all things at Chunklet, the buck stops with me. Theoretically, if Pleasure's All Yours were the final release for the label, would I be proud? Not only am I proud, but I'd hazard to say it could be the best record the label has ever released. But hey, tell your friends. Mark your calendars. Heed my words.
