Psychic Ills’ fifth studio album, Inner Journey Out, celebrates its tenth anniversary. Originally released in 2016 as the band’s first album since One Track Mind (2013), Inner Journey Out stands as the culmination of an odyssey of three years of writing, traversing the psych-rock landscape Psychic Ills carved throughout their career while taking inspired pilgrimages into country, blues, gospel, and jazz. Inner Journey Out started out the way many Ills records have: with frontman Tres Warren’s demos. Like all of their records, Elizabeth Hart’s bass is the glue that holds everything together. A cadre of musicians and vocalists—including Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, who duets on lead single “I Don’t Mind”—join in on the journey. This is also the first record to feature touring keyboard player Brent Cordero, his Farfisa and Wurlitzer work is a staple throughout. These musicians build the frame on which Warren lays his hazy guitar and vocals. An endless array of friends and guests join the proceedings to provide pedal steel guitar, horns, strings, and backing vocals, which culminate in a career-defining moment for the Ills. Thematically, Inner Journey Out is a detailed exploration of the interior and the exterior, and the pathway between the two. The focused songwriting makes the stylistic departures fit seamlessly within the band’s dexterous ethos. The rousing gospel psychedelia of “Another Change” and “Baby,” and the far-out free jazz exploration “Ra Wah Wah” help shape Inner Journey Out into a multi-faceted, full album experience. All expanse aside, it’s the most personal Psychic Ills album, too, hinting tantalizingly at love and loss but denying the listener resolution—asking questions, but never answering; seeking, but never fully concluding. Melancholy and disillusionment are part and parcel of Bragg's songwriting, but always with a healthy dash of optimism. Columbus, Ohio's Rudolph Johnson drew comparisons to John Coltrane during his career; like the jazz legend in his later years, Johnson eschewed drugs or alcohol and spent his time every day either meditating and rehearsing on his horn. You can definitely hear a little bit of Coltrane in Johnson's playing on this, his 1971 debut release for the Black Jazz label, the first of two he recorded for the imprint and the first he recorded as a leader after some sideman work (most notably for organist Jimmy McGriff); his ability to explore the upper registers and overtones of his tenor sax while retaining control is quite striking. Of course, this being a Black Jazz release, along with the bebop sounds of ""Sylvia Ann"" and the mid-'60s Blue Note stylings of ""Sylvia Ann,"" there's the soul jazz of ""Diswa"" and the groove funk of ""Devon Jean,"" all played by, as is typical on Black Jazz releases, by top-notch sidemen including drummer Raymond Pounds, who's played with everybody from Stevie Wonder to Pharoah Sanders to Bob Dylan, and pianist John Barnes, whose work is very familiar to Motown fans (Supremes, Temptations, Marvin Gaye). Bassist Reggie Jackson, who appeared on the Walter Bishop, Jr. Coral Keys record we previously released, rounds out the quartet. Remastered for vinyl by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision and featuring liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen, Whitey! Americana royalty and Blaze Foley's Austin running buddy, Lucinda Williams, anchors an assemblage of thirteen contemporary artists covering classic early Blaze recordings. Lucy Dacus, Uncle Lucius, Phosphorescent, John R. Miller, and Angela Autumn, along with seven other songwriter artists contribute tracks reflecting early recordings from Blaze's 'tree house' days in Georgia. Those recordings were originally released by Lost Art Records as 'Sittin' by the Road' in 2010 from demos made by Blaze in the mid 1970s.Other artists contributing tracks to the project are Willie Watson, Cactus Lee, Dylan Earl, Riley Downing, Joshua Ray Walker, Twain, and John Moreland. At the time of Blaze's tragic murder in 1989 he was little known outside of Austin's renegade songwriter circles. He is now revered among the pantheon of Texas' great songwriters.
