In 2016, with the blessing of David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti, Xiu Xiu released and toured the surprisingly successful album and concert, Plays the Music of Twin Peaks. Out of respect and deference to the beloved series, the band decided to put the concert to rest in 2018. After the recent and untimely passing of David Lynch, Xiu Xiu began to receive several high-profile requests to revive their interpretation of this iconic music. However, in wanting to always try to follow, honor, and continue to be inspired by the incredibly high bar of artistic challenge set by David Lynch, Xiu Xiu is instead going deeper. Eraserhead Xiu Xiu is a new live concert with accompanying film & full-length album that uses field recordings, concert specific homemade instruments, organ, modular synths, vocals, flashlights, electrical interference, and elements of musique concrete to express the bizarre emotionality, conflicted sexuality, relentless darkness, and singularly unsettled moonscape of this most incredible of midnight masterpieces. The album itself is a masterpiece in sound collage and experimentation, with tracks like "Tetra" and "Sleep Synth" shifting from minimal auditory sensations to a clobbering, grotesque cacophony. The album's closing track, "In Heaven," is a beautiful rendition of Peter Ivers' original composition, with Stewart's delicate and soft vocals showcasing the elegance and wonder found on Lynch's directorial-debut. Eraserhead's original sound design and score by Alan Splet and Lynch guide Xiu Xiu's expanded interpretation, reflecting their influence as fans and musicians. The original film gives birth to Xiu Xiu's visual lens through which to be baffled and pummeled by the band's imaginary unused auxiliary footage.Is it a short term art installation, an exploded tribute to a cinematic triumph, epitaph to an idol, via an entirely new work? This album chronicles some more of my favorite adventures in the areas of acoustic piano trio, solo piano, and electro-acoustic duo. George Marsh, drums and Mel Graves, bass were co-explorers beginning in 1968 when I began a decade long foray into multi-genre electro-acoustic music. It was a treat to re-unite with them as an acoustic piano trio in this 2003 concert. "It Could Happen To You" employs shifting time signatures, mostly in 7/4 with moves into 4/4; a vamp to stretch out on; and a final modulation for spice. "Body and Soul" begins with a freely improvised piano introduction, followed by a reharmonized and modulated melody. I love the collaborative exploration of these great old standards.Three solo piano studio pieces focusing on Cole Porter follow. Once I re-familiarized myself with the tunes, and explored some possibilities of reharmonization and approach, I stepped out of the way of the music and allowed myself to be surprised. "I Love You" ended up at a moderately brisk pace with episodes in half time; "Night And Day" as a slow rumba; and "It Was Just One Of Those Things" as an extensive exploration involving several tempos. The third section of the album is devoted to the continuing electro-acoustic duo exploration of spontaneous composition with drummer- percussionist George Marsh which began in 2014. Our almost telepathic rapport has continued to evolve, along with our instrumentation. My incorporation of SWAM orchestral software and George's addition of the Roland Electronic Drums have greatly enriched our galactic palette. There was no pre-planning on any of these pieces. On a few occasions, when we ran out of appendages, a bit of orchestration is over-dubbed. The titles came after, in an attempt to capture at least some experience of the performance. By fifteen they were running a local studio and radio station. There was no industry support, no infrastructure, no template for what they were trying to do, only the work itself and the conviction that it was worth doing.At seventeen they relocated to Montreal, joined by Chris Clegg and Thomas Hart, assembled from different corners of the country, and began building Truck Violence from the ground up. The weathervane is my body, the band's second full-length record and first with San Francisco's The Flenser, is the product of that process. Every element reflects this. The group composition, the recording, the mixing and the visual media were all produced in house without outside intervention. DIY here is not an aesthetic choice or a marketing angle, it is the only honest option available.The album cover was shot on film by the band on Avenue du Parc in Montreal. A figure perches atop a small Quebecois-style house, handbuilt from reclaimed materials, spine curved, legs pulled in, bare-backed against a skyline that dwarfs everything beneath it. A rural thing dropped into the grit of the city, small and out of place and refusing to disappear. The body is naked and defenseless, open to every stimulus the world cares to deliver. This is the album in a single image.The weathervane is my body is a continuation, an expansion, a further scribbling together of that angry statement of purpose that is their debut album, aptly titled Violence. Rooted in the noise rock and post-hardcore traditions, and steeped in a DIY ethic that runs deep in Canadian underground culture, the record is uncompromising in it's refusal to be anything other than what it is: immediate, self-determined, and built entirely by the hands that imagined it. Tigerlilly Orange Vinyl. Ted Feighan has never been interested in staying in one lane for too long - even if that means forging a new lane of his own. When the producer, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist better known as Monster Rally began work on his tenth full-length record Echoes of the Emerald Sands, out now via Flowering Jungle, he gave himself a straightforward set of criteria: Make something unlike anything he'd made before. For someone with tastes and an artistic history as eclectic as Feighan's, that's easier said than done. With Echoes of the Emerald Sands, Feighan decided to recruit a whole fleet of artists and industry friends to sing over his recordings. The list of collaborators includes TV Girl, Jordana, Toledo, Mei Semones, X-Cetra, Leisure, Sessa, Nella, Miles Michaud (Allah-Las), Benét, Jordann, Munya, and more. For the new album, he also ditched the tropical, sample-based plunderphonics that had defined his work since Monster Rally's 2010 inception, instead recording everything from scratch at his Cleveland home studio. Before Feighan began his Monster Rally project, he spent his teen and early adult years performing in various bands, including the Myspace-era screamo band Driver Side Impact. Around that time, Feighan also started collecting vinyl, and he found himself particularly drawn to cover art that felt warm and peaceful. Referring back to his lifelong love for hip-hop and the producers famed for their sample-based beats, Feighan picked up a Roland SP303 sampler and pored over his vinyl. Monster Rally was born. From Monster Rally's 2010 debut EP to 2022's Botanica Dream, he mined that vinyl collection for a stream of psychedelic beats that evoked scenes of equatorial climates and lush, faraway landscapes - not unlike the collage-based visual art he makes for himself and clients like Topo Chico, June Shine and Urban Outfitters.
