The Omaha-based singer-songwriter began releasing music in the early '90s and has walked an unbroken line ever since. Joyner's songs of quiet joy and heartache have impacted different generations of fellow artists, showing up as overt influence in acts like Bright Eyes or Kevin Morby, and as flickers of shared perspectives in the Lenkers, Oldhams, and Molinas that followed. Tough Love, Joyner's 19th studio album, continues this upward trend. While intrinsically linked to the personal grief of 2024's Coyote Butterfly, the autobiographical album Joyner made in the wake of his son's death, this new album explores the concept of tough love as a dichotomy applied to various fictional relationships including romantic, familial, and political. This balancing act comes through in vivid portrayals of everyday heartache and in the exploration of political rage and the betrayals of the American Dream.One of the marvels of Joyner's catalog is how his patterns don't repeat but transform. Knowing nods to Cohen, Dylan, and the Velvets have been part of his songwriting since the early lo-fi days, but the ways these touchstones get infused keep changing. While Joyner's ragged acoustic songs are in the spotlight, they're prodded by electric guitars and imbued with experimental tendencies. Rock songs split the difference between minimal grooves learned from Loaded-era Velvet Underground and the ecstatic rhythmic weirdness of Can. By the time we arrive at the penultimate track, "Anniversary Song," the ghost vocals and scratches of microtonal synth have blurred the lines between Joyner's folk singer heart and his avant garde spirit. All of this leads to the 20-minute title track which closes Tough Love, an eviscerating plunge into a seemingly bottomless pit of regret, survivor's guilt, and unvarnished grief. Borrowing a repetitious structure from Lou Reed's narrated suite, "Street Hassle," and combined with the full-side testimonial of Dylan's "Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands," Joyner narrates from the perspective of his departed son speaking to his father and laying out his every failure and brutally highlighting how none of it can be undone. Soon, though, this agony opens up into something transcendent, in both it's elegant imagery and ethereal atmospherics. The final moments of the album grant permission for self-forgiveness and hopefully someday, understanding. An atmospheric, cinematic album that belies a striking pop songwriting nous at it's core, it's conductor Prophetic Justice Ministry is at the centre of a new wave of creative, rule-bending Melbourne artists. Romantic, smudged and hazy, Perry emerges from behind a wall of half-light with a clutch of earworms and affecting emotions.Recorded in home studios in Belgrade (Serbia), Christchurch (New Zealand) and Melbourne (Australia) over the course of three years, Key To World Peace offers a dichotomy in approach. Shifting on a dime between ambient, filmic washes of sound and more traditional song structures, the approach feels natural, casually acid-tipped and emotionally revealing. While Perry's distinctive keys and production melding with melody is evidenced in Melbourne group Who Cares?, as Prophetic Justice Ministry there's a heightened sense of mystery and space being used.Swirling in a psychedelic fog with dry iced chords falling down like melting stars, the album pulses with an ominous, distorted intro that sculpts air into blocks of sound before Psyop offers a glimpse through the gloom at the artist navigating through crushed, shoe-gazing chords, singing a consolation into an abandoned building. With palpable sensitivity the song is shepherded into short, atmospheric passages before Love Drum's direct delivery: Perry's vocal and guitar, dancing over a hint of distortion feels like Syd Barrett at his most casually brilliant. Carrying on the tradition of a single cover on every Prophetic Justice Ministry release, here Lana Del Rey's Mariner's Apartment Complex is given a stripped back but faithful treatment. With a sound that feels like a hushed, Chris Isaak classic it's testament to Perry's own compositions that the cover doesn't outshine the rest of the album. Album closer and single Spirit House Party combines a classic chord progression with Perry's double-tracked vocal into a murky but brilliantly catchy chorus. While nowhere near as lush in it's production, there's something in the atmosphere of Prophetic Justice Ministry's vocal sitting in the mix just so that reminds us of The Electric Prunes' Holy Are You-era work with David Axelrod.Key To World Peace flits between displaying a spectrum of blurred emotional resonance in it's instrumental passages and vulnerability in the shape of raw, melodic songwriting. With his first release outside of Australia and vinyl debut, Sam Perry's Prophetic Justice Ministry is a beguiling dance in and out shadows. Mabe Fratti is a Guatemalan cellist, vocalist, and composer based in Mexico City, celebrated for her experimental yet deeply melodic work. Blending cello, voice, synthesizers, and electroacoustic textures, she builds songs that move between improvisation, ambient soundscapes, and off-kilter pop forms. Emerging from Mexico City's improvisational and experimental scene, she has become a key voice in contemporary avant-pop. Bill Orcutt is an American guitarist and composer known for his raw, highly individual approach to improvisation. A co-founder of the 1990s noise-rock duo Harry Pussy, he helped shape a fiercely abrasive aesthetic that drew from no wave, hardcore punk, and free jazz. Often playing a four-string guitar in unconventional tunings, he combines shards of melody, sudden silences, and surging rhythmic bursts, creating music that feels both primitive and structurally intricate. In parallel with his work as a guitarist, he runs the Palilalia and Fake Estates imprints and develops his own audio software, continuing to blur lines between avant-garde experimentation, song form, and DIY practice. Almost Waking: "I had known about Bill's music for a while: since his 2017 release under his own name. I connected a lot with his music and I had no idea that years later we would be collaborating! It was a total surprise that we started chatting on the internet of collaborating!-we bounced ideas back and forth, all starting with a series of guitar solo stuff that Bill sent me. I had a great time with the pieces and in some of them had the honor to collaborate with I. La Catolica in the studio here in Mexico as well where we were trying to decipher the harmonic possibilities of Bill's ideas and very carefully develop some good melodies that followed correctly the guitar. The vocal melodies followed also the same principle of trying to get tight with Bill's iniciatives. The idea was to leave a lot of space but in only one of the tracks I just went on with the idea of harmonizing shamelessly the vocals. The album ended up having this nostalgic vibe to it. I am so happy on how it turned out and grateful with the crazy coincidence that made it happen! My first project immediately after the retirement of The Manhattan Transfer, it's as much a tribute to The Manhattan Transfer and the work we did as anything else, Janis Siegel. Few artists have done more to shape the modern language of vocal jazz than Janis Siegel. An emo-influenced pop-punk band from New Jersey, Tokyo Rose was formed in 2001, while singer and guitarist Ryan Dominguez and bassist Chris Poulsen were both students at Rutgers University. Though both were playing with other bands, the two shared similar musical interests and decided to launch a band of their own. Tokyo Rose played local shows when the members' busy schedules permitted and they booked tours to coincide with vacations and between-term breaks. Tokyo Rose also recorded a self-released EP, Chasing Fireflies, which became the band's calling card after Dominguez and Poulsen graduated and made the band a full-time priority. Following a number of personnel changes, the band had a solid lineup with the addition of Greg Doran on guitar and Jon Smith on drums, and in 2003, during a tour of California, the band signed a deal with the independent label Sidecho Records, who released the group's first full-length album, Reinventing a Lost Art, in July 2003. Extensive touring followed, including playing the 2003 CMJ Festival, the 2004 South by Southwest Music Conference, and the 2004 Warped Tour. In 2005, after returning home from a tour of Japan, Tokyo Rose began work on their second album, New American Saint, which was released in October 2005 and featured a new lineup, with Josh Lurie taking over for Doran on guitar and Tom Roslak replacing Smith as drummer. Lots more touring followed, both in America and abroad, and by the time Tokyo Rose began work on their third album, Lurie and Roslak were out of the band, with Tokyo Rose reshaping themselves as a trio and Jake Margolis on board as their new drummer. When German four-piece BEES MADE HONEY IN THE VEIN TREE began to find their bearings on where to go next from the success of their previous full-length, ""Aion"" (2023), the core idea for the fourth album, ""In Between Strides"", was to take a more melodic approach. All else, they would leave to the creative process and somewhat to chance. BEES MADE HONEY recorded every other song on ""In Between Strides"" in various settings that were available to them at the time of creation: a cavernous cellar, a concert stage, an indoor balcony, a living room, their rehearsal space, even returning to the studio where their first album ""Medicine"" was tracked. Through this spontaneous and shifting approach, BEES MADE HONEY began to move texturally and stylistically from ambient and drone toward shoegaze along with more acoustic elements. According to their original plan, ""In Between Strides"" stepped into more melodic territory, with each song representing a different aspect of the band's musical vocabulary. BEES MADE HONEY IN THE VEIN TREE originate from the Swabian capital and German city of Stuttgart. All four members grew up together, eventually forming the band in 2014. Their musical template of ambient psychedelic doom was established with the debut album ""Medicine"" in 2017, and their sound has continued to evolve ever since.
