In grief or in hope marks a shift for BIG BRAVE towards denser guitar-oriented compositions. With longtime touring bassist Liam Andrews (MY DISCO, Aicher) joining guitarist/vocalist Robin Wattie and guitarist Mathieu Ball in the studio for the first time, the pieces are keenly layered with a rich tapestry of harmonics and tonal intricacies. The trio's instinctual progressions made more vivid through live recording, harnessing the gargantuan and storied sound of their performances. Wattie writes: " All that I could reflect on was grief and hope; death and life; cause and effect; shared experiences of being a human person."The tenth album for the ensemble, in grief or in hope pays homage to their past while looking into their future. Standout "the ineptitude for mutual discernment" expands on lyrical themes first explored on 2015's Au de la where "verdure" echoes melodies from the title track of 2014's Feral Verdure. These references to their past serve as potent reflections on BIG BRAVE's evolution as artists. A sonic whirlpool of string instruments surround Wattie's commanding vocals as she shifts from spectral undulations on pieces like "what may be the kindest way to leave" to the direct, spare declarations of the title track. The ambiguity of mountainous chords on "an uttering of antipathy" are coupled with autotuned phrases emphasizing the protagonists' isolation inside the fray. Together the trio shift deliver emotional momentum that vividly describes the complex and deep feelings of struggle, pain, and transcendence. Big Harp’s fourth album, Runs to Blue, does not feel overdue. With songs of wanderlust and loss, love for your children and love for your lover, accepting one’s increasing age while also lamenting that we can never be what we once were, Runs to Blue feels right on time, like visiting Drootin and Senseney at home one evening and hearing them laugh and cry their way through stories about their past and hopes for their future. Just acoustic guitar, bass, and two voices who know one another like hand and glove, Runs to Blue is the simplest sounding Big Harp record. It is, however, the most emotionally complex, two lives long combined distilled into 10 frank and disarming songs.
Runs to Blue is a snapshot in the life of a couple whose relationship began with song and remains bound to it, no matter how long they stepped back. The new album is titled Essex Honey. It explores themes of family grief, England, and the healing, communal power of music throughout a lifetime. Lyrically, the album is diaristic yet communal, existing in the haze of memory that often follows a loss. Musically, this is reflected sonically through analog recordings, recurring cello motifs, nods to earlier Blood Orange projects, and various musical interpolations from Hynes' youth. Sonically, the album includes an array of arrangements and instruments like the acoustic guitar with a punk distortion and melodic ethereal tones that were woven into his dreams as a kid growing up in Essex, imagining his future. Together they have sold over 15 million albums in the United States alone and have been awarded over 30 gold and platinum records worldwide. In 1962, Dennis met Vince Furnier (a.k.a. Alice Cooper) in Phoenix, Arizona in Art class and as teammates of their high school track team. Their first musical show was for their high school talent show where they were bitten by the rock and roll bug and began their long journey to the top of the rock pile when they hit it big as Alice Cooper (the group, not the current solo artist) in the early 70s. The Alice Cooper group invented theatrical rock shows that set new standards for all bands in their wake. They are credited with spearheading the "Glam" movement as well as Theatrical Rock and Shock Rock. Dennis' wife, Cindy, designed and made the original sequined and chrome costumes that set the Alice Cooper group apart. After years of touring and hitting the top of the charts, in 1975, the original group decided to take a break to record solo albums. Alice began his solo career and the original group has only reunited for special one-night performances since. Dennis has recorded several albums with Joe Bouchard, including Back From Hell by Bouchard Dunaway and Smith, the "Smith" is Neal who is Dennis' brother in law and the original Alice Cooper group drummer. Albert Bouchard met up with fellow engineering student Donald Roeser (a.k.a. Buck Dharma) at Clarkson College in 1965. After they both dropped out of college, they relocated to Long Island, New York and formed a band called Soft White Underbelly. They recorded two albums on Elektra Records, which the company decided not to release, causing some members to leave the band. And so Joe Bouchard, who had just finished his music degree from Ithaca College and wanted to postpone his intended music-teaching career, was asked to play bass guitar with Soft White Underbelly. After a year of hustling small club dates in New York and New England, rewriting much of their original material and recording demos, they auditioned for the head of Columbia Records, Clive Davis, who signed them to a seven album deal on the spot. The only thing that they needed was a new name - something that would sit well with the new music of the 70s. They became Blue Öyster Cult. What does Blue Öyster Cult mean? Joe says, "It actually was a poem that manager Sandy Pearlman wrote that was part of a larger mythic-historical set of poems called The Soft Doctrine Of Imaginos, A Bed Time Story For The Children Of The Damned. So finding that combination of words was easy for Mr. Pearlman, who is a big fan of novelist HP Lovecraft. The truth is that in Sandy's fictionalized world The Blue Öyster Cult were 'aliens from outer space that came to earth to influence the history of mankind in a new direction at pivotal points in time'. Currently those aliens could be the reason for the financial meltdown on Wall Street. Or not! But the band loved using their imaginations in a fun way to entertain their fans with such fantastic song themes. In 1973, Blue Öyster Cult's career got a great boost when the Alice Cooper group chose them as an opening act because they thought they were unique. And so both bands set out on a record-breaking tour of outdoor festivals and sold-out arenas that socially and musically bonded Joe and Albert and Dennis ever since. With such an illustrious background, it's obvious why Blue Coupe shows are an event for fans and new comers alike. Blue Coupe shows feature their impressive list of well known classic hit songs as well as their newly released, Tornado On The Tracks. In January of 2008, Albert, Joe and Dennis played their first official gig together as Blue Coupe performing three sets for an enthusiastic crowd in rural Pennsylvania. Right then and there, they all recognized the birth of something that promised to be artistically satisfying and loads of fun. And so Blue Coupe began playing some of the best gigs of their lives including New York City's 2008 Halloween Parade attended by an estimated one million people, opening for Alice Cooper himself and headlining several successful international tours. And now, with great expectations, Blue Coupe have combined their songwriting skills to record Tornado on the Tracks featuring such guest stars as Tish and Snooky from the Sic F*cks and Robby Krieger from the Doors. And the prolific sessions even produced four extra tacks that Blue Coupe will use for an exclusive release.
