Magdalena Bay, the Los Angeles-based duo of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, create magical pop music that floats in the ether of our collective social cosmos. "While performing at an early Twentieth Century steam driven power plant and imagining what it's industrial ambiance might have been, an outline of 'A Penchant for the Useless' emerged. Like many of my projects, the album started with a search for the kinds of unique, amusical sounds I wanted to work with. And credit is also due to a rereading of Nicolas Collins' 'Handmade Electronic Music.'" Using a collection of electric guitar pickups, contact microphones, and transducers that would vibrate random metallic and wooden objects, Barreca built a library of loop recordings. Also recorded were the electronic buzzes and bleeps of a computer and various home appliances. Granular effect processing and layering with a sampler and a physical modeling synth transformed this largely atonal source material into deep, harmonious assemblages. These long chains of sonic transformations fused with the dark beauty of their industrial steam-era inspiration, and resonate throughout the music. Only rarely will these pieces hint at their now obsolete and decaying source materials. 'A Penchant for the Useless' is Marc Barreca's 15th solo album, adding to a catalog of constantly evolving and refining experimentation and compositional innovation that now spans more than four decades.Barreca has also collaborated with Three Point Circle, Young Scientist, Savant, and K. His new album Glera sharpens that instinct into focus, presenting Benevento not only as a virtuosic keyboardist and bandleader, but as a composer building worlds from rhythm, tone, and feeling.Glera is a genre-bending jazz record that folds in soul and reggae's elastic low end with an open-door sense of possibility. The project began three years ago as a kind of private exercise, with Benevento writing intuitively, inspired by Italian film scores and melody. It's exploratory but grounded, complex yet unmistakably groove-forward.Album opener "Frizzante" is pure musical celebration captured on tape - a high-energy, feel-good banger that finds Marco trading melodies with himself over a relentless groove. On "Turandot," Benevento is joined by Italy's own Marianne Mirage on vocals; the haunting, cinematic track sits comfortably between the worlds of Portishead and Serge Gainsbourg. Then comes "Big Top," stretching the album's palette even further; equipped with voice memos and peacock calls, it's most aptly summed up as "circus funk." Blow the whistle and the game begins with the jazz-fusion-esque dancefloor filler "Houdini," a kick-in-the-door burner from the very first drumbeat. Blending dream pop into the mix on "I Can't Control This Bliss," Marco invites Dream Crease to the microphone for a dose of lo-fi gorgeousness. Elizabeth Steiner brings her storied harp work to "Miss Neptune" over a deeply vibey, reggae-influenced backing track. Putting the pedal to the metal, "Sprezzatura" plays like a high-speed pursuit through narrow streets, while "Quattro Passi" brings the pace down to a saunter, featuring jazz vocalist Chiara Civello.Marco Benevento is operating at the highest level, shaping sound with purpose and curiosity. This album announces itself loudly-both outward-facing and deeply intimate. It's music that moves-across genres, tempos, and registers-while remaining anchored to the joy of discovery. The albums are being mastered for vinyl by Rob Colwell (Brother Cane, King's X, Galactic Cowboys).Mark Farner began his musical career in Michigan during the mid-1960s, playing in local bands and developing a style rooted in blues, rock, and soul. Before achieving national fame, he performed with groups like Terry Knight and the Pack, where he honed his songwriting and guitar skills. His early experiences in the Detroit-area music scene helped shape his raw, energetic approach that would later define his massive success with Grand Funk Railroad in the late 1960s and into the 1970s. Grand Funk released 13 studio albums, 4 live albums, 8 compilation albums, and 25 singles. This includes six platinum and seven gold-certified albums between their recording debut in 1969 and their first disbandment in 1976. The band had a string of hit singles such as "We're an American Band", "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)", "Some Kind of Wonderful" (a cover of Soul Brothers Six), "Walk Like a Man", "The Loco-Motion" (a cover of Little Eva), "Bad Time" and "Inside Looking Out" (a cover of the Animals).After his rise to fame with Grand Funk, Farner entered a markedly different phase of his career in the 1980s. This period saw him step away from mainstream rock excess and lean into message-driven songwriting, blending his signature guitar work and bluesy rock approach with spiritually focused lyrics. Farner tied his work closely to Frontline Records during this time, a label known for promoting rock and metal artists with faith-based messages.Farner's third and final studio album for Frontline Records was Some Kind of Wonderful. The title track, a remake of the classic Soul Brothers Six song popularized by his former band Grand Funk Railroad in 1974. Re-recording this track was a brilliant marketing move. The song was a nod to Farner's past, bringing in the old fans, and an introduction of his voice to a whole new audience. His new version updates the arrangement with contemporary production while still emphasizing the bluesy groove and vocal swagger that made the song endearing and enduring. This balance between nostalgia and modernization is a defining trait of the album, helping it to be one of the best-selling albums on the Frontline label and held in high regard by fans to this day.Since the mid-1990s, Mark has largely focused on touring under his own name, often billed as "Mark Farner's American Band," a nod to one of Grand Funk's most iconic songs. His live shows have remained his strongest connection to fans, featuring a mix of Grand Funk hits and solo material, delivered with the same high-energy guitar work and vocals that defined his early fame. Farner is currently touring with his American Band in 2026.
