Iris Temple is a band, more accurately a duo, or as they might put it simply; two best friends who speak the same musical language. The duo's loose definition of what Iris Temple is could be a direct result of their distrust of a music industry that seeks to define, commodify and deplete everything in it's environment. In fact, every part of Iris Temple's process seems to defy the industry's conventions. Quinn Regan and Quinn Cochran, colloquially referred to as The Quinns in Chicago's alt. R&B scene, have avoided the typical trajectory of ""rising artists"" for years. After each release in their early career, the band would seemingly go into hiding. Just as fans began to wonder if they had disappeared for good, a new single would mysteriously emerge online - groovy, full of life, melancholic yet playfully sincere; a thread in the musical lineage of artists like D'Angelo, Erykah Badu and Frank Ocean stretching into the future to remind us that music made with care can defeat the cold cynicism of the day. Iris Temple's latest project Ghosts of the Future is a stark reflection of life inside a decaying empire. Across seven tracks crafted at the intersection of electronic experiments and virtuosic live instrumentation the two trade verses and sing together in lush, layered harmony over subtly neck-breaking underwater grooves. The contrast between futuristic synths and acoustic strings in the project's sonic landscape mirrors the tongue in cheek dissonance between it's laid-back production and biting lyrics. Whether by taking direct aim at the men who sold the world with sly commentary on tracks like ""New Refrigerator"" and ""Wise Guy,"" or by lamenting the destruction of love and nature on songs like ""Over the Edge,"" the Quinns interrogate the harsh reality of life under capitalism's pervasive corruption with understated maturity and warmth. "I've always wanted to use that title," Sam Beam says of Hen's Teeth, his eighth full-length album and his sixth for Sub Pop Records. "I just love it. To me it suggests the impossible. Hen's teeth do not exist. And that's what this record felt like: a gift that shouldn't be there but it is." Hen's Teeth and his previous album, Light Verse, are siblings of a sort. They were recorded during the same sessions after a year-long dry spell, with the same band, at Waystation studio in Laurel Canyon. "I'm at a point in my life where spontaneity is a lot more important to me. I'm a lot freer and I love making music more than ever. There are no right or wrong answers. You just pray for your luck and try your best." In this case prayers were answered and luck struck hard. The musicians cohered so quickly that they were often getting songs recorded in just a few takes, sometimes at the rate of two or three per day. The two albums might therefore be thought of as fraternal twins: they share DNA and complement each other, but are defined as much by their differences as their similarities. Light Verse (2024) took it's name from a form of poetry that makes heavy use of wordplay, humor, and nonsense. It's a sweet and airy album, impressionistic, at times even flirting with abstraction, a hearty shaking off of the doom and gloom of the Covid era. The world of Hen's Teeth is earthier, darker, more robust and more tactile than that of Light Verse. The songs have titles like "Roses," "Robin's Egg," "Dates and Dead People," "Singing Saw." The cover is a portrait of Beam surrounded on all sides by flourishing ferns and other tropical plant life - a surreal scene that contrasts starkly with the cool blue-white palette of Light Verse. As for the music, Beam says: "The experiments in this one were more with genre than with form. For the last couple years one of my go-to's has been Van Morrisson's Astral Weeks, that style where jazz musicians play folk music and it blossoms in different ways than folk musicians are normally interested in doing." The results nod to everything from Dock Boggs to Simon & Garfunkel to Tropicalia. And Beam continues to incorporate collaborations: "It's exciting, making it more of a family affair. Interacting with a bunch of friends and being blown away by what they can bring, musically and emotionally. I get to play all day with these people I love and they respond by giving me their most vulnerable, expressive self. It's the weirdest, best job ever." Hen's Teeth features David Garza on guitar, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, and Tyler Chester on keyboards. Griffin Goldsmith, Beth Goodfellow, and Kyle Crane all play drums. Paul Cartwright handled string arrangements, and plays violin and mandolin among others. The indie-country trio I'm With Her appears on the ebullient lead single, "Robin's Egg," and again on the tender, mournful "Wait Up." Beam's daughter Arden contributes harmonies and backing vocals on three tracks. Born two months before the release of his debut album, The Creek Drank the Cradle (2002), she is now 23 years old and a musician herself-the first of his children to appear on one of his records.

A few years ago, Jenn Wasner seemed to be forever asking her partner, Alan Good Parker, who was singing that song on their Los Angeles stereo. The answer was almost always the same: another demo from Jacob Ungerleider, an unassuming pianist from Virginia that Parker had met when they both toured with Natalie Prass and who had recently moved west. Wasner wanted in. She first told Ungerleider she wanted to hear his demos, too, that she needed these sad, sweet, stark pop songs in her life. And then she took the next step. Though Ungerleider was making a career as a sideman, seemingly touring and recording in multiple bands at every given moment, the Flock of Dimes and Wye Oak singer thought he should step out as a songwriter, to offer these tunes to people beyond their text chain. Lost In Another World is James Ellis Ford's excellent, emotionally resonant second solo album. It was made from start to finish in just over two weeks in early 2025, while James was on a hospital ward between punishing rounds of chemotherapy, following a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an aggressive cancer of the white blood cells. He?hadn't?even fully absorbed the implications of the diagnosis - nine months of treatment with only a 30% survival rate - before a bed was found for him at Barts, London. During the second round of treatment, James (known for his production work with Fontaines D.C., Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Depeche Mode and as both a solo artist and one half of Simian Mobile Disco) did the only thing that felt natural to him; he wrote, played, sang, recorded and mixed a solo album about the experience. ""There was no filter. I just sang the first thing that came into my head into the laptop."" It became a form of diary keeping; a way to process what was going on?and also a way to cheer himself up, which would account for why some of the album is so surprisingly upbeat and poppy: ""It was a pep talk; I was telling myself I was going to be OK. It was one way of dealing with the existential dread I felt. It gave me the ammunition to fight the experience and was a distraction from it."" Lost In Another World shares the experiences from the frontline of illness; fear, love, reassurance, boredom, pain, calm, disbelief, and ultimately hope. These transmissions from the eye of the storm have informed an album which is truly something special.

As long as she can remember, Jane Remover has practiced her own autonomy as much as possible. The nineteen year old songwriter is an omnivorous listener that produces everything herself. She has been lauded by fans and writers alike, for accidentally creating entire genres in the wake of her prolific two-year run.Her debut album Frailty was written amidst the purgatorial summer after a high school graduation, en route to turning eighteen that September. The lyrics are a wayward coming-of-age diary of an LGBT+ teenager, stuck in the suburbs of a confusing, socio-politically turbulent America. Jane's words sting, but are shrouded in meticulous production; a sui generis vein of DIY rock. Simultaneously, it's steeped in the lo-bit, nostalgic synths that soundtrack a final glimpse of younger memories. The LP was warmly received: Album of the Year List placements from Pitchfork and TheNeedleDrop, glowing reception from Paste, Insider and FADER, and a widespread resonance from a young audience who consider the album cathartic and relatable.
