It's 1964 and the first Berlin Jazz Festival is about to reach it's absolute peak: the final concert on the night of Friday, 25th September by Miles Davis. And the European subsidiary of Columbia Records, CBS, couldn't wait to release this legendary event on LP. The new quintet, for the first time with Wayne Shorter on the tenor sax (and not yet as composer), thrilled and roused the audience in the Philharmonie from the first minute to the very end. The classics "Miles (tones)", "So What" and "Walkin'" were performed at an astonishingly fast pace, the ballads were tender and dreamy. Such a magical atmosphere was rarely evoked at later concerts, which was probably due to the excellent acoustics of the large concert hall.

Whenever Milt Jackson could free himself from the 'bondage' of the Modern Jazz Quartet and it's assertive leader John Lewis, he dedicated himself to his two great passions: ballads and the blues. That was precisely the case when he entered the famous Rudy van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, USA in 1956. He was free to choose his sidemen, and money was no object, which is why various formations gathered in the studio for the three recording sessions. With Lucky Thompson on the tenor sax (unfortunately for only three numbers), Barry Galbraith, Barney Kessel or Skeeter Best on the guitar, Oscar Pettiford or Percy Heath on the bass, together with Kenny Clarke or Lawrence Marable on the drums, he set off on a journey through the history of jazz. John Lewis stayed unobtrusively in the background and offered 'Bags' (as Milt was known) plenty of opportunities to glory in soloistic freedom.The themes were soon found: the musical composers Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern, as well as a work from The Duke Ellington Songbook, formed a basis upon which all the musicians could perform with confidence. Three compositions by Milt Jackson himself proved that he too was full of imagination. In contrast to some of the other rather more dawdling and laid-back MJQ LPs, "Fontessa" offers diversified and intense music. Nothing is routine, perhaps because the drummer Connie Kay had replaced Kenny Clark just one year previously. But maybe too because Milt Jackson's blues influence inspired John Lewis perceptibly to forget all about discipline. All seven numbers are true gems. But if you want a special hint, just listen to "Bluesology". Well, perhaps the present author is too much of a Milt Jackson fan. Be that as it may, the music magazine "Rolling Stone" gave this LP a five-star rating!

Originally released in 1977, Moondog In Europe was visionary composer Louis Thomas Hardin's aka Moondog first release after moving from NYC to Germany. Regarded as reflecting the historicity of his new environment, the album is more structured and formal than most of his previous releases; however, his layered song-cycles are just as circular and experimental, and still backed by a fair amount of tribal percussion. "Viking I" opens the album with Moondog's solo celesta playing and retains the quirk and charm of his previous work before going into heavy pounding percussion that opens the nearly five-minute "Chaconne In G," giving way for bouncy violins and cellos to take us down a familiar road. Side B is unlike anything in Moondog's catalog. Made up of six extremely heavy and mostly ominous pipe organ tracks that last over twenty minutes, it is darker and far more eerie than anything Moondog had yet released. Less playful than other of his albums, In Europe displays Moondog's virtuosity as a classical composer, with elegantly stylized pieces that see him embracing a grandiosity he hadn't approached previously.

We can thank our lucky stars that Nina Simone was well aware of her musical environment and enjoyed experimenting with it, despite her notorious eccentric personality. This was the only reason that so much basic repertoire, traditional blues numbers, black work songs and favorite white show melodies - all filled with a deep soul feeling - reached her fans. ""Emergency Ward!"" is no exception. First there is the explosive medley, recorded live, of George Harrison's ""My Sweet Lord"" and David Nelson's ""Today Is A Killer"". Accompanied by a small combo and a gospel choir, Nina Simone ignites an 18-minute blazing bonfire which loses none of it's spiritual fire for even a second.In contrast to the gentle ""Poppies"", extravagantly produced with strings, woodwinds and chorus, is the questioning ""Isn't It A Pity"", arranged for piano. Here, simple, throbbing harmonies are occasionally allowed to swell into clouds of chords, giving Nina Simone the opportunity to show off her highly diversified vocal timbre which, as so often, fades away into nothing like an unanswered question. This is an exceptional album filled with a wealth of feeling and one which will leave no one untouched.

In both her public and private life, Nina Simone was adamant about one thing, namely, what she simply would not tolerate. She sometimes complained about the miserable erotic prowess of her lovers, while at other times her audience were a target for her tongue. Sometimes she canceled her performances at short notice and held a tirade against show business as such. In her music, rooted in gospel, she sought a path which took her down a middle course between jazz and pop, thus earning her the title of High Priestess Of Soul (as in the LP title) with her rock fans in the Sixties.The present blues album was recorded during what was undisputedly her most productive phase. It is a recording which does not swim with the tide of the times in that it does not employ massive forces or seek the twang of electrification. Instead Nina Simone's wonderfully sleek contralto voice bathes in the gentle timbre of an organ and a pithy, pulsating - but by no means stomping - rhythm. The cool, unemotional number ""Sings The Blues"" guarantees riveting tension and the authenticity of the genre which is, of course, the be all and end all of music for every black artist. Surely no compilation, no matter how carefully conceived, could possibly mark the diva's 70th birthday in February and sudden death in April 2003 better than this re-release.

It would not be an exaggeration to claim that Ornette Coleman's collaboration with Atlantic Records changed the jazz world for ever. On ""Ornette On Tenor"", his sixth LP for the label (not counting outtakes compilations), he switches to tenor saxophone, but the great enrichment of this record is the participation of Jimmy Garrison on double bass. Compared to his previous recording ""Ornette!"" (with Scott LaFaro on the bass), these recordings are earthier, darker. Garrison integrates seamlessly into Coleman's sound world. And he accompanies Coleman's tenor saxophone to perfection. He appears to have a lot of fun with his instrument, which he played previously in rhythm and blues combos. His musical lines breathe precisely this atmosphere, and sometimes one might believe one is listening to a ""free"" Coleman Hawkins. Ever since his instrument was damaged in an assault, Coleman played relatively little on his tenor sax, but he never lost his love for the lyrical, highly expressive and pleasing tone. Ornette Coleman, who died in June 2015 from cardiac arrest, must be counted as one of the most influential musicians in the jazz genre. His importance does not only lie in his ground-breaking recordings in the late Fifties and early Sixties, but lies more significantly in the educational effect of his work - in the fact that he always went beyond himself to the very end. Just a little more than a month after his ground-breaking release ""Free Jazz"", Coleman recorded the present album, in which he perhaps distanced himself somewhat from the conceptual idea, but still guided his quartet to ever more richness of detail and creativity. ""Ornette!"" was the first recording with bass-player Scott LaFaro and Coleman, and the difference in approach between LaFaro and Charlie Haden is noticeable from the very first note of ""W. R. U. "". His playing is more direct and agile, and one can hear how he drives Coleman and Don Cherry actively onwards and more aggressively than Haden's warm, languid phrasing. The tracks, with titles that are taken from the works of Sigmund Freud, are all gems and serve as a wonderful starting point for the musicians' improvisations. By now, Coleman felt himself comfortable in lengthy pieces, and neither he nor his fellow musicians had trouble in filling out time, never once lacking for new ideas. Ed Blackwell deserves a special mention - he shows himself here at his very best. ""Ornette!"" is a superb release and an absolute must for all fans of Coleman and creative, improvised music in general. It was John Lewis, pianist of the Modern Jazz Quartet, who brought Ornette Coleman to the renowned Atlantic label, having heard him play in Los Angeles. Ornette Coleman is doing the only really new thing in jazz. ® he reportedly said. The present initial Atlantic album was released just in time to coincide with the New York debut of the Coleman Quartet in November 1959. Lewis was sure that Coleman would open up new paths for jazz, and his opinion is reflected in the title of the album - ""The Shape Of Jazz To Come"". After the rather worn-out hard bop routine of the past years, this music was like a breath of fresh air. The fast numbers (""Eventuality"", ""Chronology"") remind one of wildly hyped-up bebop. Other numbers (""Congeniality"", ""Focus On Sanity"") juggle with catchy, almost folk like short motifs. This album contains two of Coleman's most beautiful compositions: ""Peace"" and ""Lonely Woman"", which was later given lyrics and often heard in it's vocal version. The Mulligan-Baker Quartet provided the model for the pianoless quartet - and when the band swings along once in a while with a moderato tempo, it is truly reminiscent of cool jazz. Be that as it may, the two wind instrumentalists just love the frenetic 'cry' and the intentionally 'imprecise' interplay. Clearly defined stanzas or traditional harmonic forms were not for them. The term 'free jazz' was already in existence - but it had a quite different meaning, namely jazz without paying for an entrance ticket. The album ""Free Jazz"", however, was intended to lend it's name to a quite different style of jazz. 'Free' playing - now this meant that no one was bound to conventions, you could let your imagination run loose. Free jazz gave one the chance to find new rules for every new composition. And it was to be the greatest boost to innovation in the world of jazz. Ornette Coleman's album from December 1960 stands at the beginning of the free jazz era like a massive portal. Coleman thought big: he brought two quartets into the studio at the same time, both with two wind instruments and no piano, and let them play together for 36 minutes without a break - a collective improvisation. There aren't any precise themes, although short, fanfare-like motifs do exist in which the winds come together. A continuous dense rhythmic beat underlies the music almost throughout - and the pulse is felt rather than heard. One musician after the other comes into the foreground to improvise, almost like at a jam session. First Coleman, then Dolphy, then the two trumpeters. The other winds, however, never remain silent, then make comments and support one another continually - the energy level is immense the whole time (it was cold in the studio... ). Only when it is the turn of the bass and drum players do the winds remain silent for about eleven minutes. This album is not only a historic caesura, but a truly great experience over and over again.
