The Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band releases Incarnadine, a landmark debut album celebrating the diversity and vitality of Indigenous people in jazz. Led by acclaimed vocalist Julia Keefe (Nez Perce) and featuring a 16-piece ensemble of Native and Indigenous musicians from across Indian Country, the album draws on compositions made famous by 20th-century Indigenous jazz luminaries like Mildred Bailey and Jim Pepper alongside new works by contemporary Indigenous composers. Mali Obomsawin's "Wawasint8da" transforms a Jesuit-translated Abenaki hymn into a haunting exploration of resilience and paradox. Delbert Anderson's three-movement DDAT Suite honors Dine code talkers and sacred tribal landscapes. Rogan Kahale's arrangement of Queen Liliuokalani's "Ku'u Pua i Paoakalani" brings a tender, cinematic sweep to the program. Incarnadine is history, protest, and celebration rolled into one, a necessary and overdue document of a vibrant jazz tradition that has long existed outside the mainstream spotlight. Fans of large ensemble jazz, vocally driven big band recordings, and socially conscious music will find this album both musically thrilling and deeply meaningful.

May it please the people of the known universe that the multi-monikered musical ensemble legally trading as Kay-Bee Funk Music Group are releasing what will alphabetically be their first album, 'Access All Areas'. Created with Karate Boogaloo's patented 'Lovely Recording Technique' these recordings let you know that everyone's a VIP when you're listening to KB. 'Access' was the one word maxim philosophically guiding The Old Kar-Boo's this innings. If a tune became convoluted, to the bin it went. Only those that could be hummed by any and all were kept. This sieve was on hand throughout the whole process, arrangements and forms were kept watertight, bells and whistles to a minimum. If 2024's 'Hold Your Horses' was an epic, 'Access All Areas' is a haiku. The band's tried and true recording process was dutifully respected save for one wonderful addition, the magnificent 'Sound Recordings' helmed by it's proprietor and engineer extraordinaire Alex Bennet. Steering the 4 track Ampex 440 off road when required and making sure the vibes were constantly correct, Alex is a bonafide Booger. Although it feels only a moment, the clock tells us it's been nearly 20 years since Kay's Bees first tried to play the songs of their musical heroes, The Meters, Booker T & The MG's, and The JB's to name but a few. Since then The Famous Flying Karate Boogaloo Brothers have put one foot in front of the other and distilled their own sound, one that respectfully acknowledges the history of instrumental Funk & Soul music, and reflects the time they've spent crafting their distinctive sound. As bright as each member shines individually, it is a special event when all four planets in the Booger System align. 'Access All Areas' is one such eclipse, it is an artistic expression of equal measure by each member and it casts a shadow unique to the occasion. Every second of music was composed and produced with all hands on deck, mixing was handled by Henry Jenkins, artwork by Hudson Whitlock and Callum Riley, and Darvid Thor did things you'd have to see to believe. Music is a team sport and there's no I in Funk. Skilled guitar dances over the ultimate groove by Marcus Miller and Omar Hakim. This important Japanese fusion album was recorded by guitarist Kiyoshi Sugimoto, who was extremely busy at the time as a first-call musician, together with Marcus Miller, Omar Hakim, and Warren Bernhardt, who were in Japan for Kazumi Watanabe's "TO CHI KA" tour. The lively playing of Marcus Miller, then 21 years old and just before being discovered by Miles Davis, is a must-hear. Recorded from July to November 1980 at MEDIA STUDIO & COLUMBIA STUDIO. In June 1955, in the Atlantic studio, standards provided the starting base for the long and wonderfully sophisticated improvisations by Lee Konitz and Wayne Marsh, who were at that time pupils of the great Chicago maestro Lenni Tristano. Although the numbers are declared as own compositions, such as "Background Music" and "Ronnie's Line", they are actually none other than adaptations of "All Of Me" or "That Old Feeling" - but at the very highest level. Lee Konitz always called this 'The Twelfth Step'.

Spectrum, the 1968 debut album by legendary funky drummer Les DeMerle, is widely regarded as a rare groove classic and is also known as a notable sampling source in hip-hop, including by rapper O.C. The album features an astonishing lineup of jazz greats. The horn section includes Frank Foster, Lew Tabackin, Ernie Lawrence, and Chris Woods on saxophones, along with Charles Sullivan and Marvin Stamm on trumpet. The stellar rhythm section includes guitarist Joe Beck and pianist Norman Simmons-some of the most respected musicians of the era. From the explosive title track "Spectrum" to the deep jazz-funk groove of "Underground," the funk reinterpretation of The Beatles' "A Day In The Life," and the breezy Brazilian-tinged "Aquarius," the album proves that DeMerle was already an extraordinary drummer at a young age. This reissue is pressed on limited marble vinyl.

Together with the saxophone player Eddie Harris, Les McCann was responsible for one of the best-sold albums in the whole history of jazz - ""Swiss Movement"" (Atlantic SD-1537). It was his debut album on the Atlantic label. 1968 saw the release of ""Much Les"" and elaborated it with new aspects of what McCann did best in his early years: his core sound was enhanced with a string section and Latin percussion. The result is convincing, appealing, and captivating throughout and is considered an underestimated classic. In all the numbers, McCann is supported strongly and in a relaxed manner by his former trio, the bassist Leroy Vinnegar and the drummer Donald Dean. However, it is the string section which dominates as McCann's accompaniment; of the six tracks they are to be heard in all three slow numbers, as well as - surprisingly - in the relaxed soul jazz of ""Doin' That Thing"", thus lending this track almost a film soundtrack feeling. Luckily the album does not wallow in sentimental kitsch; the strings are always employed with good taste in order to lend a solid base to the whole and provide counterpoint to McCann's economical solo playing in the ballads. Further into the album he transforms Cole Porter's ""Love For Sale"" in one of his characteristic funky soul-jazz grooves, and returns to his gospel roots in a lyrical, exuberant rendering of ""Burnin' Coal"", where he employs a simple but catchy beat. The whole album is well varied, and the abundant, expanded arrangement serve to accentuate - not to veil - the masterly groove of the McCann Trio. And that is what makes ""Much Les"" such an entertaining, essential listening experience. This Speakers Corner reissue LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. More information under http://www. Pure-analogue. #com. Compared To What is a catchy melody that is heard on the radio, again and again, all around the world, today, tomorrow and the day after. It is unmistakable, still groovy, full of soul, humorous, stirring. And ""Cold Duck Time"" is no way inferior: Eddie Harris blows for all he is worth. Everyone can hear that Benny Bailey was challenged by the unknown themes, but this maestro still managed to capture the audience's ear and attention. ""Swiss Movement"" is, and will remain forever, a highlight among all the jazz LPs that have been recorded live and it shouldn't be missing from any collector's shelf.

The liner notes for ""The Inner Mounting Flame"" were written by the guru Sri Chinmoy - now that's a real sales point! The music too burns right from the very first note to the last as though it were licked by the flames of hell fire. The wealth of ideas, sheer vitality and supreme soloistic virtuosity of the five top-notch musicians from four different countries is absolutely first class. In addition there is their truly dreamlike interplay; one could say they were born and grew up with the same 'spirit'. ""Meeting Of The Spirit"", ""The Dance Of Maya"" and ""You Know You Know"" are the highlights of this first Mahavishnu Orchestra.Aspiration - struggle, hope and desire - is seen as an inner mounting flame which takes man towards 'divine perfection'. Well, opinions differ of course. But what is certain is that this music from 1971 is still amazingly fresh and creative even 36 years later - and luckily it is available once again in the form of a vinyl disc.."" From Grammy and Emmy Award-winning trumpeter, synthesist, and Academy Award-nominated film composer Mark Isham comes At the Carousel Club, a six-track album that brings together jazz improvisation, vintage analog electronics, and cinematic atmosphere into a single, deeply personal statement. The album began with Isham's towering collection of vintage analog synthesizers and modular instruments: a vast, interconnected system he used to generate massive electronic landscapes and evolving sonic textures. Those foundations became the architecture for live ensemble performance, recorded at the legendary Mad Hatter Studios with drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Kaveh Rastegar, guitarist Nels Cline, vocalist Ayo Awosika, and the Orchid String Quartet. At the center of it all is Isham's trumpet, lyrical, searching, and unmistakably human. Moving through each environment as an observer, a storyteller, and an improviser. The result is music that is electronic but organic, cinematic but intimate, structured yet alive with spontaneity. At the Carousel Club is a record for listeners who find themselves at the intersection of jazz, ambient, and contemporary classical music. For fans of Pat Metheny, Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, and Nils Frahm.

Two of the most distinctive voices on the contemporary Danish jazz scene, chromatic harmonica player Mathias Heise and guitarist Pelle von Bulow, join forces on Repertoire, a duo album built on interplay, shared intuition, and a carefully selected body of songs spanning jazz standards, soul, pop, and contemporary material. At it's core, Repertoire reflects the long-standing musical familiarity between Heise and von Bulow. Working as equals in a stripped-down duo setting, the two musicians treat each piece as a flexible framework for improvisation rather than a fixed arrangement. The music unfolds in real time through dialogue, contrast, and a finely tuned sense of balance between structure and freedom. The repertoire draws from a wide range of jazz and pop standards. It includes So Tender by Keith Jarrett, Besame Mucho by Consuelo Velazquez, and Beatrice by Sam Rivers. From the pop and soul canon, the album features Overjoyed by Stevie Wonder, Rock with You by Rod Temperton, popularized by Michael Jackson, and One Day I'll Fly Away, alongside Angel Zoo by Danish band Phlake.Further repertoire threads include Velas, written by the great Brazilian composer and singer Ivan Lins. Always and Forever is part of the broader soul repertoire associated with Heatwave. The album closes with Bluesette, one of the defining compositions in the jazz harmonica tradition, also by Toots Thielemans, and a natural reference point for Heise's instrument.Mathias Heise has established himself internationally as one of the most original voices on the chromatic harmonica. In 2013, he won the Chromatic Harmonica World Championship, followed by the Danish Crown Prince Couple's Stardust Award in 2016 and the Ben Webster Prize in 2017. He was the first musician admitted to the Rhythmic Music Conservatory with chromatic harmonica as his main instrument, and has since released a series of critically acclaimed albums, including his 2023 Storyville quintet album, Mouth Games. Heise is a true virtuoso with a harmonic curiosity and stylistic openness. He can play anything!Guitarist Pelle von Bulow is an established figure on the Danish jazz scene. He is one of a generation of guitarists who are inspired by the legacy of Doug Raney, who lived in Copenhagen. Pelle von Bulow is also a virtuoso and has, among others, incorporated influences from legends such as George Benson as well as the Brazilian jazz guitar tradition. Coming from a family with a strong jazz tradition, Pelle von Bulow is the son of acclaimed alto saxophonist Christina von Bulow, and represents a younger generation of Danish jazz guitarists rooted in both tradition and contemporary expression.Repertoire shows how contemporary jazz continues to evolve through a new generation of musicians. A Revolving Alliance has multiple meanings, of course. It revisits some of the broader themes of hope and despair (as they relate to American society) that were part of Slocum's recording With Love and Sadness (Sunnyside, 2021). But that record, commissioned by Chamber Music America's New Jazz Works program and composed as a single suite with multiple movements, was focused more specifically on systemic racism in America. A Revolving Alliance 'deals more broadly with my seemingly delusional hope that everything we are witnessing currently in the US (i.e., the unraveling of the fabric of a democratic society) might still somehow be cyclical, that we may find our way back towards becoming a more compassionate society,' commented Slocum.Slocum once again enlisted the producing acumen of Jerome Sabbagh who possesses, 'a rare gift of being able to hear and articulate many of the sonic nuances that can deeply enhance a listener's experience,' said Slocum. This is an all-analog project, recorded live to two-track analog tape, with the trio in the same room and no edits, punches, or 'fixes.' Slocum elaborated, 'More and more I find myself drawn to the magic, mystery, innocence, and interplay that can often be found in first takes. Of course, in this 'live-to-two' setting, our legendary recording/mixing engineer, James Farber, effectively becomes the fourth member of our ensemble. Everyone is given equal weight - James is a master who records musicians the way we would like to be heard. We also experimented with various panning possibilities in the studio - ultimately all agreeing that having the guitar in the left channel, drums in the right channel, and the bass in the middle, brought the most depth, emotion, and clarity to the music. The sound that James Farber captured in the studio was so impressive that, during mastering, Bernie Grundman used no EQ, bypassing the board entirely to get the cleanest signal.' Hardly any other musician has released so little as Hasaan Ibn Ali, born William Henry Langford Jr., in 1931, who died in 1980. Just seven titles in all are his complete output, all of which he composed himself, all of them on the present Atlantic LP, and all recorded in December 1964. The saxophonist Odean Pope, who often practised with him, talks of a second recording session in 1965 for Atlantic, but the recordings were never released because Hasaan was sent to jail shortly afterwards; rumour has it that the tapes were destroyed in a fire - and it might well be that recordings with John Coltrane still exist somewhere or other. Until then, one should enjoy the Max Roach Trio with Art Davis on the bass to the full. We have here a recording that will astound and fascinate your ears with it's originality. A first impression conjures up reminiscences of Cecil Taylor and Herbie Nichols, while Hasaan himself talks of the pianist Elmo Hope as the man who brought him closer to the 'mystery of music'. When asked how the recording session with maestro Max Roach went, Hasaan said: -They scared me to death. According to Odean Pope, Hasaan was not an easy person to get on with, and he was convinced of his talent to the point of arrogance. But despite this - or perhaps because of this - one listens spellbound to the 40 minutes on this LP, a legacy and never-fulfilled promise of an extremely talented man. We are indebted to Max Roach, who persuaded the bosses of Atlantic Records to make these recordings. For many, many years they had vanished from the record market, but fortunately they are now available as an audiophile re-release to be listened to and admired. Meditations, released in 1966 on Impulse! Records, captures John Coltrane's late-period quartet in transition, expanding into new sonic territory while retaining the core intensity of his classic lineup. Recorded in 1965 at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs studio with producer Bob Thiele, the session features pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones, tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, and drummer Rashied Ali. Across the suite-like program, the music flows as a continuous meditation on transcendence and collective expression, pushing Coltrane's spiritual jazz into heightened realms of energy and abstraction. It marks one of the final appearances of his ""classic quartet"" members Tyner and Jones before they departed, leaving Coltrane to pursue new directions with Sanders and Ali. The Verve Vault series is always mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
