From singer/songwriter Paul Kahn comes Willingness, a six-song EP that is as much a musical memoir as it is a record. Written and demoed over decades, these deeply personal originals found their moment when Kahn's longtime friend Catherine Russell - one of jazz and roots music's most celebrated vocalists - heard them and insisted they be recorded. Russell produces and performs throughout, contributing backing vocals, mandolin, keyboard, and arrangements alongside her longtime musical director Matt Munisteri (guitars), Saturday Night Live house band drummer Shawn Pelton, and first-call bassist Russell Hall. Special guests include Ben Rosenblum (accordion), Sara Caswell (Hardanger fiddle), Glenn Patscha (Hammond C3), and Veronica Dye (flute). Drawing on Americana, bluegrass, jazz, and roots music, Willingness is warm, direct, and fully alive - a songwriter's album in the best sense of the word. Fans of Mose Allison, Dave Frishberg, and the roots-informed vocal jazz of Catherine Russell will find much to love here.

Peter Beets' latest recording announces itself with unbridled authority: a vivid, hard-swinging statement, powered by a first-rate horn section anchored by three standout American voices of the new jazz vanguard, and propelled by a rhythm section of luminaries including Reuben Rogers and Willie Jones III-artists whose resumes include collaborations with legends such as Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves, and Roy Hargrove.Under Beets' assured direction, his New York Sextet shapes each work with commanding finesse. In reimagining a canon of Spanish compositions, Beets refracts Spain's musical heritage through a fresh and strikingly modern jazz lens. The album surges with vitality, it's swing taut and irresistible. While echoes of the flamenco idiom surface throughout, they are situated within a broader, architecturally ambitious musical landscape built upon works by Spain's most esteemed composers-Albeniz, de Falla, and Granados. These enduring and powerfully expressive pieces hold their own beside the legacies of Chopin, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff, and Tchaikovsky-composers whose works Beets has similarly reimagined in his inimitable style-yet remain unmistakably and proudly Spanish.Beets and his ensemble weave these traditions into a seamless dialogue with uncompromising, straight-ahead jazz, executed at the highest artistic level. The result is a singular fusion of virtuosity, cultural depth, and ensemble brilliance. Once again, pure Peter Beets. UPC: 6153325812897Label: Magic Ball Jazz Rec.Release Date: 4.17.26Format: CD

Solo Motions is a deeply personal solo guitar album from Phil Sargent, presenting the instrument as a complete musical voice through unaccompanied performance. Recorded entirely without accompaniment, the album explores counterpoint, harmony, and improvisation with a focus on clarity, space, and emotional presence. Drawing inspiration from Bach's contrapuntal writing alongside modern harmonic language, Sargent reimagines jazz standards and original material through layered voices and inner motion. Influences from modern jazz and classical traditions are woven seamlessly into performances that balance structure with spontaneity. The album includes one original composition, "Kelita," alongside fresh interpretations of well-known repertoire, all shaped by a reflective and intimate approach to solo playing. Rather than emphasizing virtuosity for it's own sake, Solo Motions invites focused listening and rewards repeated engagement, highlighting nuance, restraint, and the expressive power of a single instrument. Solo Motions offers a quiet, immersive listening experience that captures stillness within motion and depth within simplicity.

Afro-Disco Makossa is the first Linear Labs album built for the dance floor, and Adrian Younge is uniquely qualified to make it. Having already recorded modern Afrobeat classics with Tony Allen and Ebo Taylor through Jazz Is Dead, Younge asks a new question: what would a Ghanaian producer in '76 have made if he set out to create an American disco record for his hometown? The result is a relentless, hypnotic patchwork of Afrobeat, funk, and disco recorded to tape, built for the DJ of any era.

For the past six years, flutist Alex Hamburger and pianist Jose Luiz Martins have been the heartbeat of each others' musical worlds. Now, with their debut record as a duo, the husband and wife create a shared world, offering listeners a highly personal, textural immersion into the sonic catalog of their journey. The two musical prodigies were originally on divergent paths when they first met in 2018 during coincidental time abroad in Basel, Switzerland. Hamburger, originally from the Washington, D.C. metro area, was living previously in New York City, while Martins was studying for a masters in Basel after leaving his hometown of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Their first shared notes snapped their lives together, ushering in an instant connection and understanding, both about the music that influenced them and the music they wished to put in the world.Together, the partners found a deeply rooted shared commitment to using space, listening, and empathetic reaction to dive into the unknown and return with beauty and compassion. Now living together in Hyattsville, Md., Hamburger and Martins recorded Catalog of Dreams in 2025 as a response to the diverse range of musical traditions that shaped them, both as individuals and as a pair. Six of the album's eight songs are unique reinterpretations of traditional and modern classics from composers such as Herb Ellis, Wayne Shorter, and Thundercat. The duo then flexes the intimate dynamics and texture of piano, voice, flute, and electronic keyboards to reinterpret the compositions into vehicles for new dreams and possibilities.Of course, the most noticeable influence on the album is that of Brazilian music, which native Paulistano Martins brought to the record (and the relationship) from the very beginning. Three tunes make this connection explicit: Gilberto Gil's classic 'Ladeira da Preguica' (made famous by Elis Regina), Airto Moreira's eternally groovy 'Tombo in 7/4,' and the modern Brazilian heavyweight Luisa Lacerda's 'Poente,' a familial celebration that features lyrics by her father Andre Lacerda. However, Catalog of Dreams is steeped in Brasiliana beyond these three tunes, with traces of groove, melody, and harmonic complexity saturating the duo's playing and arrangements throughout. The record's two original compositions, both composed by Hamburger with production assistance from Martins, achieve this with a tender nuance. By taking these Brazilian influences back into her own roots of great lyrical musical traditions (the Great American Songbook, Black American Music, and folk), Hamburger finds a way to explore themes of loss, trauma, injustice and the human experience with nuance and care.Although both Hamburger and Martins are prolific on their own, each with their own critically acclaimed body of work as bandleaders, this is their first full length album with just the two of them. With this debut of eight songs in just under thirty minutes, the partners draw us into their journey, into their catalog, and into their dreams. Based between New York City and Europe, the double bassist Alon Near presents his debut album. "Names, Places" is a musical travel journal, written over five years of touring, traveling, and hiking. Each composition reflects a place and a meaningful encounter that left a melody behind. The award-winning bassist (1st Prize at the Rostov International Jazz Competition, 3rd Prize at the International Society of Bassists) releases an album that moves between city and village, complexity and simplicity, tracing a personal journey shaped by movement, memory and human connection. Inspired by musicians like Avishai Cohen, Lars Danielsson or Shai Maestro, Alon Near will tour in Europe in 2027.

Five years after it's first volume, Alternative Guitar Summit returns with Honoring Pat Martino, Vol. 2, a second tribute to one of jazz guitar's towering voices. Drawn largely from 2021 pandemic-era sessions, these performances capture a moment when making music together carried renewed meaning and urgency. What began as a canceled live event evolved into a series of intimate studio recordings, bringing together a distinguished group of artists to celebrate Martino's enduring legacy. Guitarists including Kurt Rosenwinkel, Cecil Alexander, Dave Stryker, Paul Bollenback, project producer Joel Harrison, and others, offer personal interpretations that reflect both reverence and individuality. Newly recorded tracks from 2025 complete the program, adding unique perspectives to this expansive portrait. Rather than replicate Martino's singular voice, these artists honor his legacy by engaging the depth, sophistication and genius of his compositions, reaffirming their place at the heart of the modern jazz canon.

Tenor saxophonist Andrew Rathbun and pianist Gary Versace-longtime collaborators on several acclaimed SteepleChase sessions-meet for the first time as a duo on Episodes, revealing a striking new dimension in their musical partnership. Versace's chameleon like ability to shift color, texture, and groove pairs seamlessly with Rathbun's ever evolving compositional voice, whose pieces here range from unmetered shapes to baroque tinged counterpoint and driving ostinati. The duo's interplay is vivid and deeply attuned: Versace favors linear, wriggling motion over harmonic cushions, while Rathbun's improvisations unfold with narrative clarity, balancing modern language with melodic focus. Across the surreal, atmospheric 'Episodes' series and the contrasting standalone works, the two push themselves into unfamiliar territory, crafting music that feels exploratory and quietly daring-an inspired debut for a duo with limitless potential.'Rathbun is a unique voice on saxophone with a style and sound of his own.' (Ed Sapiega - Jazzview)'All For Now (SCCD 31933) makes a solid case for what an all-around inventive player Gary Versace is. Celebrating those who provided mentorship and momentum through his musical development, trombonist Andrew Kim's debut album offers a result that is so much more than a senior capstone project. "Lineage" is a formidable album, a testament to Kim's embrace and diligent immersion in the jazz tradition under the guidance of master musicians; most importantly, Michael Dease at Michigan State (the producer here), and lately with Marshall Gilkes at Eastman - displaying a clear sign that he's poised to benefit this living legacy through his own innovative contributions. Along with saxophonist Sharel Cassity, pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Rodney Whitaker and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr., Kim's arrangements of classics by JJ Johnson & Curtis Fuller, along with five of his own compositions, bristle and swing from the outset, delivering a listening experience full of fire, fury and fun. "Andrew Kim is a part of the current renaissance in jazz. His playing is expressive, precise and shockingly virtuosic. He is a wonder." -Randy Napoleon "He's got the chops, he's got the taste, and he's got that big golden sound. Because of that, the future of jazz trombone? Yeah, it's looking real bright." Swedish vocalist Anna Pauline celebrates over two decades in jazz with her new album, Lucky To Be Me, out June 26 on Storyville Records. The album is a culmination of years of artistic exploration, mentorship, and collaborative discovery. It features standout performances, including a trumpet solo by jazz legend Randy Brecker on Pauline's original composition Just One Song and a duet with Janis Siegel of the Manhattan Transfer on the title track. This 10-track recording includes one original composition and nine interpretations of jazz standards, cinematic favorites, and musical theatre classics. The repertoire reflects Pauline's deep engagement with the Great American Songbook, the narrative richness of musical theatre, and the improvisational possibilities of jazz. Each track captures a moment of musical conversation and spontaneous discovery, anchored by Pauline's luminous voice and emotional depth. The project gained momentum in 2023, when Pauline met Siegel in Sweden through pianist Mattias Nilsson. Their first duet sparked a musical understanding that quickly evolved into mentorship and collaboration. Siegel later introduced Pauline to pianist, arranger, and producer John Di Martino, whose arrangements and artistic direction shape the album's sound. Di Martino assembled a group of top New York jazz musicians and crafted each arrangement to showcase both Pauline's voice and the ensemble's improvisational interplay. The sessions were recorded in New York with a strong emphasis on live interaction, allowing the music to unfold naturally. For Pauline, Lucky To Be Me realizes a long-held dream while marking a personal and musical turning point. Recording in New York, the birthplace of much of the music that inspired her, was both symbolic and deeply meaningful. Working closely with Di Martino, Pauline blended her Nordic sensibility with the rhythmic vitality and storytelling of American jazz. This creative dialogue has produced arrangements that honor the original material while highlighting her distinctive interpretive voice. This collaborative approach shape the album's repertoire, which combines an original composition with reinterpretations of classics from jazz, film, and musical theatre. Tracks like Leonard Bernstein's Lucky To Be Me and Michel Legrand's Les Parapluies de Cherbourg showcase Pauline's capacity to inhabit each song fully, while Rodgers & Hammerstein's The Sound of Music and Josef Myrow's Autumn Nocturne highlight her subtle phrasing and improvisational creativity. Collaborators including saxophonist Aaron Heick, trumpeter Freddie Hendricks, and percussionists Khalil Kwame Bell and Vince Cherico bring drive and textural richness to each performance.Recorded at Trading 8s Recording Studio in New Jersey, with duets tracked in Sweden, and mixed and mastered by Dave Darlington at Bass Hit Studio in New York City, the album unites two musical worlds: a Nordic jazz voice in dialogue with American tradition, enriched by mentorship and musical lineage. Lucky To Be Me is a celebration of connection, creativity, and the joy of jazz storytelling, bringing together musicians, traditions, and generations in a shared musical journey. ARBRE is a collective consisting of three focused musicians: Me'lusine Chappuis sings and plays keyboards, Paul Butscher sings, plays flugelhorn and keys, and Xavier Almeida plays drums. The three are constantly evolving, both individually and as a band, as their album history already documents. Their clear and airy sound is underpinned by clever grooves and compact interplay. Despite it's lightness, the music becomes dense, raw, intricate and touching. The fragility of the tracks and songs is given solid roots, anchored in the depths of the sea: they form a mysterious and precise ecosystem of sound and groove. The instrumentation carefully balances analogue and electronic elements. The vocals alternate between English and French, coming from two different places, both stylistically and emotionally. ARBRE's rhythms are multi-layered, and the melodies are clear and purposeful, with an indie pop flair. There is much to discover on ARBRE's third album, 'Wrap a Tear in Cellophane', it's cosmos being carefully developed by the band over a long period of time. Despite all it's energy, the music addresses human fragility and develops a precise yet relaxed, instinctive power. ARBRE does not present it's musical language as art for art's sake, but rather to convey a message: community and compassion are essential for coexistence on the planet. ARBRE works explicitly as a collective, in which all decisions, whether artistic or otherwise, are made jointly by all members. The decision to think and act together is an essential and consequential value that the three musicians consciously cultivate, demonstrating that making music together clearly transcends the individual and can unleash a greater power. Fueled by the musically eclectic, disciplined and packed days of being the music director for the Airmen of Note, trombonist/composer Ben Patterson and his tight circle of DC-area colleagues have carried that energy on since. Over the last decade, guitarist Shawn Purcell, pianist Harry Appelman and drummer Todd Harrison have been central to seeing through Patterson's vision, always there to support, but also to spur him to places unexpected. On "Stretch," bassist Miles Brown joins the team as they careen through a wide-ranging set of 10 originals, several reflecting influences on Patterson's music, such as Michael Brecker with "Missing Michael," the Tower of Power rhythm section with "David and Francis," while hints of John Scofield and Pat Metheny also permeate the musical landscape. There's a certain frankness and ease that emerges when friends of many decades exchange ideas. Pianist Bob Nell from Montana and New York bassist Michael Bisio have been engaged in just such a musical conversation for more than fifty years. With "We Are Here," that dialogue continues through a collection of Nell's decidedly original compositions, brimming with surprise while wandering down the many paths born from his expansive musical perspective, and performed in two trio settings that feature drummers Adam Greenberg and Austin Belluscio. First meeting in Seattle in 1975, just setting out on their respective musical lives, their paths have remained intertwined-like strands of a double helix-continuously circling back to one another through music. This music reflects decades of exploration and millions of miles traveled, countless performances, and an ongoing search for new musical horizons. All paths lead home. After fifty years, the journey continues. "Athletic grace and macho gentleness." - Earshot Jazz
