A curtain came down on a monumental part of my life on December 15th, 2024. After 55 years of countless concerts, recordings, travels, meals, and laughter together, my Indian Brother Zakir, departed. The group Shakti, which we founded together in 1973, has ended. I sincerely hope other 'Shakti' kinds of groups will follow. The kinds of groups that unite diverse cultures for one reason only: Joy, because Joy was for 50 years the unshakable foundation of Shakti. We brought Joy to each other and to countless listeners over the years. Music is our true Unifier, for in our concerts were Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Atheists all enjoying music together. Thank you Zakir-Bhai, our lives are blessed from your presence. - John McLaughlinI would like to dedicate this album to my mentor, guru, and guiding light Zakir Hussain ji. Tabla will never sound the same again. - Shankar MahadevanZakir Ji, your presence in my musical journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. As a friend, a brother, and a teacher, you have inspired, guided, and enriched my path in ways beyond words. Your brilliance, generosity, and boundless energy continue to shape and uplift my music. This album carries a piece of that shared spirit, and I am forever grateful for the joy and wisdom you have brought into my life. - Ganesh RajagopalanThank you once again, John ji and Zakir-Bhai, for giving me a place in this incredible journey. Shakti has been more than music-it's been family, rhythm, and soul. As we share this album, I feel the deep absence of Zakir-Bhai. His spirit is in every beat. This one's for him. - Selvaganesh VinayakramThis landmark record release is offered in tribute and celebration, acknowledging the fifty-year legacy of John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain's longstanding creative partnership - more akin to brotherhood than mere artistic collaborators. Together their magic transcended cultural boundaries with joy, empathy and curiosity as their guides, they created something entirely new and unprecedented. Their work together revealed untapped facets of their own imaginations and changed the world in the process. And now and forever more, we walk in the universal path of music, love and togetherness that they carved out for all of us. - Souvik DuttaThis recording is dedicated in memory of our beloved Ustad Zakir Hussain.

Saxophonist Sigurdur Flosason has been one of Icelands most active jazz musicians for the past decades. Through out his career he's cooperated with some of Scandinavia's finest musicians. On his latest release, Blue shoes, his partners are Danes Kjeld Lauritsen on Hammond organ and Kristian Leth on drums, both of whom he has cooperated with on previous releases. New to the mix is the outstanding Swedish guitarist Erik Soderlind. On a few tracks they are joined by Danish percussion master Birger Sulsbruck. The music, all Flosason's originals, is a cross between jazz and blues with a personal and nordic twist. The album was recorded at Village recording in Copenhagen during the summer of 2025. Iconic drummer Simon Phillips is known worldwide for appearances with Toto, The Who, Jeff Beck, Al Di Meola, Hiromi, Stanley Clarke and his own group, Protocol. Simon continues to evolve as a composer on the exciting new Protocol 6 album. As he says, "The material is actually quite different from Protocol V. With the band now in it's sixth year, I was able to write specifically for each player. It's my rock 'n' roll side that dictates the form of each tune, even though the style is definitely jazz-rock. I like to call it progressive jazz." The lineup in this road-tested outfit remains constant except that Phillip Whack now holds down the saxophone chair, playing tenor, alto and soprano with great authority.

London Jazz Classics originally came out in 1993 - the first album ever to be released on Soul Jazz Records. The album brought together rare and obscure dance tracks in a unique mix of jazz dance and fusion, funk, Brazilian and Latin grooves. // The album was ironically titled - none of the music was from London, none of the music was traditionally classified as jazz, and all of the tracks were at the time practically unknown to most people. Instead, these were tracks that were filling dancefloors in a nascent jazz dance scene in London being created by a small group of DJs - Paul Murphy, Gilles Peterson, Sylvester, Patrick Forge and a few others. // As demand for these rare groove jazz tracks grew, previously unknown records such as Alive's 'Skindo Le Le', Doug Richardson's 'Salsa Mama', Carlos Franzetti's 'Cocoa Funk' and Emilio Santiago's 'Bananeira' became sort after and even-harder-to-find items with original copies going for £100s of pounds. // These tracks became part of the soundtrack to this jazz dance scene which has now spread across the world. This music paved the way for the arrival of many of the UK's new wave of current artists such Shabaka Hutchings, Nubya Garcia and Ezra Collective who today offer a uniquely London sensibility of fusing jazz with wide-ranging cultural influences - everything from afrobeat to soul. // London Jazz Classics was the first album to bring this jazz dance music featured here to a wider audience. More than 30 years since it's initial release Soul Jazz Records are releasing this new 2026 edition, bringing the music once more to a new generation of listeners.

A compilation album celebrating 7 years of documenting today's Japanese jazz - from the label Days of DelightDays of Delight, a new platform dedicated to Japanese jazz (founded and produced by Akiomi Hirano), will release the compilation album Spirit of "Days of Delight" vol. 5 (DOD-057) on October 23, 2025. This release commemorates the 7th anniversary of the independent label Days of Delight, which has specialized in Japanese jazz since it's establishment. It marks the label's 59th release, featuring performances that represent the highest standard of Japanese jazz - from living legends who thrived in the "golden 1970s" to rising stars in their 20s. Comment from Akiomi Hirano, Founder & Producer of Days of Delight:"Seven full years have now passed since the launch of the label, and this marks the fifth compilation drawn from our catalog. As with our previous compilations, I hope that by listening to this album as a whole, you will not only sense the spirit of Days of Delight but also fully experience the strength and allure of Japanese jazz at this very moment. "The entire project is both spare and impossibly lush. While this may sound like a contradiction, it has everything to do with the virtuosic musicianship of pianist Art Hirahara and Jim Tomlinson as well as Stacey's elegant and unadorned vocal approach. The opening track, "Lucky To Be Me," works as an invitation to the theme of the album and uses the open space between vocal phrases to draw us in. And, while all of the tracks are worth an unadulterated listen, I'm going to list a few of my favorites starting with "La Javanaise" which is delivered with an almost offhanded musical precision and sung in Stacey's pitch perfect French. The surprising warmth of Stacey's lower vocal range makes "A Time For Love" the intimate ballad it was meant to be. Jim's tenor sax does the same so that his playing is the ideal compliment to Stacey's voice. The entire album is a joy to listen to both musically and sonically. It was lovingly recorded and mixed by Jim (yet another of his talents) at their home studio in Virginia."Cliff GoldmacherStacey Kent is an American jazz singer in the mould of the greats, with a legion of fans, a host of honors and awards including a Grammy nomination, album sales in excess of 2 million and more than one billion streams, and Platinum, Double-Gold and Gold-selling albums that have reached a series of chart-topping positions.Stacey, a comparative literature graduate with a passion for music, travelled to Europe to further her studies after receiving her degree from Sarah Lawrence College in NY. Through a series of twists of fate, she found herself in London where she enrolled in a graduate music program at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she met her future husband and musical partner, Jim Tomlinson.Kent's musical journey began with childhood piano lessons. A keen ear and true voice lead her to search out opportunities to express her love of music. However, nothing suggested the shift from the academic path to the one that propelled her to international recognition as one of the foremost jazz singers of her generation. With a catalogue of 13 studio albums, including the Platinum selling, Grammy-nominated Breakfast On The Morning Tram (Blue Note/EMI 2007) and an impressive list of collaborations, Stacey has graced the stages of nearly 60 countries over the course of her career. Her worldwide fan base is testimony to her ability to express the emotional heart of her songs with delicately nuanced interpretations that transcend borders and defy categorization. Her unique multi-lingual repertoire includes standards, chanson, Bossa Nova, and originals written by Jim Tomlinson, her saxophonist/producer/composer/arranger husband in collaboration with the Nobel Prize-winning author, Kazuo Ishiguro with whom they have worked since 2006. She has also recorded with Brazilian legends, Marcos Valle, Roberto Menescal and Danilo Caymmi, and the celebrated French string quartet, the Quatuor ebene.Stacey's last studio album, Summer Me, Winter Me, was released in November 2023 on Naïve Records. A collection of fans' requests from her as yet unrecorded concert repertoire, Summer Me, Winter Me entered the French jazz charts at number 1 and has quickly established itself as a new highlight in her discography. She now returns with A Time For Love, set to appear on April 3rd, 2026. UPC: 3700187690724Label: NaiveRelease Date: 4.17.26Format: CD
The creative willfulness is immediately apparent. Just like the playful spirit. A photograph of four athletes, visibly marked by a match, in trilogue with the group's name and the album title: Stefan Scholer Trio - "Psalm B". A strange, seemingly peculiar combination. Stefan Scholer is aware of this. He accepts the unpredictable nature of the effect. The photograph, taken in 1966 on the sidelines of a Gaelic football match in Dublin, Ireland, by the world-renowned photographer Evelyn Hofer, had a magnetic pull on him. He discovered it in a Hofer exhibition at the Museum Kurhaus in his hometown of Kleve in the far west of Germany. Subsequently, he did everything in his power to obtain permission to use it. The question of 'why?' dissolves satisfyingly in his keen explanation. The pianist and composer follows his intuition unconditionally while also closely reflecting on his decisions. In this case, he quickly arrives at a "profoundly human" element that speaks to him in the image. This, in turn, corresponds to Hofer's intention to capture naturalness. How does the album title fit that? Scholer doesn't construct any intellectual bridges. For him, the term 'psalm' has become a kind of key to a spiritual context in his work over the years, initially stemming from a specific religious connection. He opened this up a few years ago. Even in the expression of these athletes, he senses some of that. That's sufficient. And it might just ignite the curiosity and openness for the sonic content of this album, Scholer's fourth, in receptive listeners. The introduction to the opening title track sets the tone. In Scholer's highly personal touch, one hears and feels precisely the human element that moves him. His playing is delicate yet possesses an effortless clarity. This almost songlike, narrative melodic expression recurs throughout the pieces, even in complexity. His close connection with bassist Lukas Keller and drummer Simon Braumer, both of whom also played on the previous album "Folklore," results in an unbroken flow. The pianist's leading voice is built on an open, flexible interplay - the leader is also an attentive team player. Motifs from he world of sports are also hidden in the titles of some compositions: "Ronny & Francesko" (bobsledding) and "Bob Chigarillo" (bodybuilding), loosely based on real-life figures. Scholer draws inspiration from both, exploring themes of culture and world politics. A sense of self-will that nourishes imagination and philosophical reflection. A connection to nature, a sense of sublimity, a longing for peace (even if only in one's own neighborhood), the lingering effects of a past relationship - no matter how profound: Stefan Scholer is audibly searching for positivity, for hope. This is unmistakably present in this album like it is in the previous one. Many of us, he is convinced, have our own personal psalms. Just like the athletes on the cover. It highlights the trio's unique blend of precision, spontaneity, and playfulness through 13 mostly original tunes. Filled with soulful grooves and expressive blues inflections, Kovalcheck's melodic clarity and improvisational storytelling shines through as he pays tribute to mentors and friends through titles such as "Donald's Juke Joint," for pianist Donald Brown, or "Bright Child," in memory of organist Akiko Tsuruga, their bandmate who was lost too soon. Acid Jazz Records introduces the new Jazz Sessions series, with a very special album from prolific drummer Steve White, in his first album as a leader, performing as the Steve White Trio. White is known for his long association with Paul Weller, as a member of the Style Council, playing on the hit single "Long Hot Summer" and Weller's biggest solo albums: Wildwood, Stanley Road, Heavy Soul and As Is Now. Alongside this, he continued to record in both jazz and soul settings, under names such as Trio Valore, The Groove Train and of course the Jazz Renegades - his great late '80s Hard Bop outfit that recorded an LP for Polydor, another for Acid Jazz-precursor label Re-Elect The President, and an EP for Acid Jazz. On Soul Drums, his return to Acid Jazz Records, he plays glorious tribute to his jazz roots and filmic influences, performing alongside long-time collaborator Chris Hague. The perfect album to introduce this new jazz series, with a midcentury-inspired sleeve to match. Leading with the single "Changes," the album also includes a clever reworking of the Style Council's "My Ever Changing Moods."

For 15 years now, Stoomboot has been drifting through the corridors of Flemish culture, with a half-smile and a tear, watching the world go by. Early in his career, that gaze turned inward: a romantic young man searching for love. On Stoomboot (2014), he became a storyteller; a poet singing about women he couldn't have. He collaborated with Kommil Foo and was even nominated for a MIA Award. With Storm (2016), the melancholic journey continued. But something changed: he met the love of his life. His world grew. On Zwarte doos (2018), the longing for love turned into living with it. The outside world slowly seeped into his songs - reflections of the Brussels attacks, Trump's first presidency, and the chaos of the times.Meanwhile, Niels Boutsen (that's the man behind the boat) graduated as a historian and started teaching. There, the idea for Omdat we naar de zee stromen (2020) took shape: a concept album about time and how it ticks differently for everyone. For his students. For his wife, who was battling burnout. For his grandparents, whom he rarely visited. Stoomboot wanted to go beyond music, creating a stage performance around the same theme, including storytelling, songs, and live charcoal art by Wide Vercnocke, drawn right there on stage. Before he knew it, the ten-year anniversary of Stoomboot was approaching. Time to look back, the best way he knows how: with a guitar and a story. 10 jaar Stoomboot (2021) was recorded live at Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. Over that decade, he also wandered off the main path a few times, paying tribute to the French chanson that inspired him (Mr. Bateau, 2019), blending poetry and jazz in Zandland (2019), releasing Ze leest zo mooi verkeer (2022) with Raymond van het Groenewoud, and touring with his wife in Het is zoeken (2024), a tender and funny show about early parenthood. After ten years on stage, Niels found himself wondering: "What now?"Another record? Absolutely. He picked up the phone and called Tuur Florizoone (accordion) and Christophe Devisscher, two musicians he'd admired for years, watching them light up stages all over the country. "Want to make something together?" he asked. They did.The result is Een heel leven (2026), another concept album, this time about the unpredictable paths life takes. The title says it all: a musical stroll through what Niels's life could have been, but never was. Sometimes the choices that don't feel like choices end up shaping everything. The album was recorded live in the studio. Just three musicians in a room, telling a story. Put it on, and they're right there with you. UPC: 608917614824Label: BuzzRelease Date: 4.17.26Format: CD
Sullivan Fortner's ended 2024 with three Grammy nominations including Best Jazz Instrumental Album for 2024's Solo Game. 2025 kicks off with the release of his new trio album Southern Nights. In July 2023, Fortner returned to the Village Vanguard as a leader. Tasked with forming an all-star trio, Sullivan brought together the iconic bassist Peter Washington, celebrated for his lyrical depth and groove, and drummer Marcus Gilmore, whose innovative rhythms have redefined modern jazz. Despite their first-ever collaboration and limited rehearsal, the trio's chemistry was immediate, resulting in Southern Nights, a raw, unedited live recording that perfectly captures the energy of their Vanguard performances. "Not only would this be the first time Peter and Marcus had ever met, but there was no time to rehearse. [...] With no isolation, no edits, and very few retakes, we managed to record 12 songs in four hours." Featuring one of Fortner's original composition, pieces by Allen Toussaint and Consuela Lee, and a heartfelt tribute to his late mentor, Bill Lee, the album is an acoustic celebration of spontaneity and connection. On Southern Nights, Fortner celebrates the music of New Orleans that he holds so dear and continues to prove why he is one of the most celebrated jazz pianists of his generation, delivering music that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Trumpeter and composer Ted Chubb has spent much of his career creating spaces where jazz can be heard up close. A longtime New York-area bandleader, educator whose playing reflects the lyrical lineage of Booker Little, Art Farmer, and Kenny Dorham, he and his wife reopened a historic Jersey City building, the Statuary - an intimate performance space where audiences sit just feet from the band.
