From the late 1960s into the mid-1980s a New Orleans-based record label, the Smoky Mary Phonograph Company, released fourteen LPs by some of the city's most revered and respected elder jazz musicians. The labels's owner, trombonist Frank Demond, produced Smoky Mary's sessions and often played on them, including many of the songs anthologized here on Traditional Jazz From New Orleans. A native of Los Angeles, Demond fell love with the Crescent City trad sound after hearing the Preservation Hall Band perform in California. That transformative moment inspired Demond to move to New Orleans, sit in with the band, and eventually join it. Smoky Mary refers to a nineteenth-century train which many musicians rode between gigs in downtown New Orleans, bythe Mississippi River, and. Dome five niles away, in Milneburg on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Demond focused on recording such venerable veterans as singing pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, trumpeter Percy Humphrey and his clarinetist brother Willie Humphrey, trumpeter Kid Thomas Valentine, trombonist Jim [Big Jim?] Robinson, and a host of their colleagues.

Equal parts remembrance, document, and party, For Fat Man wasn't meant to bear that title. Kerry's untimely passing during Mardi Gras is sadly but irrevocably now a part of the story of this record, which began as a celebration of where the brass band tradition at Preservation Hall was at and where it's going. And thank goodness, the story doesn't end. Life, like any good brass band, keeps moving. This record is a joyous link in the chain that is the story of New Orleans and it's music. The album Patterns from Nature is an unashamedly ambitious showcase for his remarkable abilities as a composer and orchestrator, working within the space where the heartfelt collaborative improvisation of jazz meets the adventurous rigor of contemporary music and the depth and complexity of conceptual art. As composer, Nachoff created the closely written, intricately detailed scores for a pair of large-ensemble pieces. As bandleader, he oversaw the realisation of those scores by a hand-picked team of remarkable genre-crossing musicians, including pianist Matt Mitchell, percussionist Satoshi Takeishi, bassist Carlo de Rosa, clarinetist Francois Houle, trombonist Ryan Keberle, and the internationally renowned Molinari String Quartet, supported by a large chamber ensemble conducted by JC Sanford.
